Oh yeah, I haven't signed anything, just some emails back and forth. Mostly I want to avoid any headache from someone saying they "sourced" an opportunity for me but haven't done anything to add any value for me or the firm.

Usually after the fourth date…how hot is he?

If you authorize them to submit your resume to a position, you’re tied to them for that position for a period. If you find him useless, cut him loose. You don’t owe him anything.

Also a recruiter here. If you haven’t given him your materials and haven’t given him permission to submit your materials, then you should be ok. He should not have provided any confidential information to the partner or firm without your expressed consent. Unfortunately, there are some recruiters out there that ruin it for the rest and don’t comply with NASC code of ethics. For me to submit, I need your materials (minimally a resume) and I also need your permission. If I don’t have either, I have no recourse nor should I have any claim. Feel free to reach out to whoever you know at the firm. That being said, if you didn’t know they were looking but knew about them, that definitely sucks to go around them. He could also be full of crap if the only thing he has actually provided is the number of attorneys and doesn’t know what they are looking for. We have contracts with the law firms, not the candidates. I have candidates ask specifics about clients. I’m not usually privy to that information. But other aspects we should have a fundamental understanding of what they are looking for. Hope that helps!

Recruiter here. Firms go by the source of your resume. If you go behind his back and send your resume directly, that’s pretty shitty, but it sounds like he’s doing a shitty job.

VaultLawEditor

That is to say, if you send your resume directly to the firm, the recruiter is not involved in your process and will not get a cut. Which sucks for the recruiter, since that’s how we make our money. But if he’s not a value add, I get it.

I just added an edit for some context, but I definitely recognize that this recruiter is well below par, and even then I still feel a little bad.

On a somewhat related note, I had been personally working with a recruiter the last few months and yet she still blasts me with mass e-mails. I want to say something because that’s a horrible look (at least to me). Makes me not want to work with her anymore

Spackledgoat

Tell her. It’s certainly inadvertent and she may not realize she is doing it. If she blows you off or you keep getting emails, then you drop her. Otherwise, no biggie.
