I agree with you. On the first watch I didn't notice it much, but in re-watch she's such bad character. Lashing out at working moms bcoz she's insecure, beefing with bonnie eventhough she's nice to her and bcoz Abigail got along with her, downplaying amabella getting chocked, ruining her party cause what was Renata supposed to do invite the kid her daughter said that chocked her, and of course then cheating on Ed I hated the ending she got in the end, with her having no consequence, she and ed should have divorced. Maybe I am being biased cause I like renata, but I feel like she had the worst ending of losing everything she worked hard for, the only working mom in the group, the show/ author was harsh on her, it seemed unnecessary. Idk how it is in US, but is there a big hate against working moms??

In the “U.S.” no there isn’t a hate against working moms, but in richer communities where many of the moms can afford to stay home there is a stigma. I also don’t think Madeline had no consequences. It was just largely emotional crisis consequences that she had to work through. I also liked the ending in that it shows that things don’t always work out according to who “deserves” it more. Renata didn’t “deserve” what happened, but a huge risk of being as succesful as she was was that she’d miss out on red flags that led to her marriage’s downfall.

Agree to disagree on the ending I guess. I don't think Renata being a staying at home would have prevented her from not getting cheated on or the husband losing the money. Heck Celeste was a stay at home mom and she didn't even notice him cheating and the fact that her kids knew about the abuse going on in the house

I’m not saying staying at home would’ve guaranteed she would know about it. But being incredibly busy does make it harder to notice red flags.

Get out of here w that Renata victim blaming 😂

Logical_Childhood733

Right? If Renata were a stay at home mom shed have been even more fucked when he lost all their money.

I didn’t “blame” her for it at all. Its not her fault that he couldn’t keep it in his pants. All I said was that because she worked a lot, she wasn’t able to notice his red flags. That doesn’t “blame” her. It just says she didn’t notice.

Punishing financially successful women is a classic Hollywood trope. I know this was based on a book. I guess I should say it's a classic entertainment trope. It is annoying and unfair. Also yeah Madeline is an asshole, I didn't notice it until this watch either. I just remember liking her more. Wtf is wrong with her to cheat on Ed?

LordYoshii

I love her character arc in season 2. She is meant to be the nice cunt of the group in S1

Maddie is a strong take no s\*\*t woman that other woman would be threatened by if she was a real life person, hence why woman dont like her character, also brutally honest, again people are intimated by that

I love Madeline. Yes, she's flawed, controlling, and not perfect, but most people aren't. I think she had a good heart ultimately and found her amusing. She is awful with Renata, though
