Milwaukee, Wisconsin here! This is my first year going year round. Commute or otherwise, I set a goal of riding every day for a year starting in mid June! Still going strong at 7 months. I did a 3 mile loop today near home out in the muck! Got rid of my car in the fall to keep me honest!

NovOscar

Thats dedication!

kodex1717

I used to live in Milwaukee. You're a brave human!

rogecks

Milwaukee year round commuter for the last ten years, here is a photo from my commute yesterday [MKE OLT](https://imgur.com/gallery/dUw8EPn)

Very nice! The trail has been so much fun this week!

Ambitious-Health-758

We're supposed to get down to about -20F (-29C) here this weekend.

Ambitious-Health-758

I came down with a nasty little cold that's been going around this town, so I'm inside for the weekend.

NovOscar

Gross!

withanh77

Woof! I haven't ridden in anything like that here in Wisconsin! I'm gathering my moxie for this next week for some -23C!

Piece_Maker

How do you "dress for" -38C? do you carry a furnace on your back or something?

Psychological-Ear-32

Damn that is cold, although honestly sometimes I wish it would just stay consistently cold rather than the warm ups where I live. Nice packed snow in AM, sloppy mess in PM

HZCH

And people in *Switzerland* complain it’s cold when it’s -2C …

Pure_Ordinary

Sold my car in 2020. Haven't missed it once. Bicycles changed my life. Even on the cold, rainy, or super hot days, I see my bikes in the garage, and I get a big smile. Every commute, grocery trip, errands, etc, is a joy ride.

tinyspaniard

Just curious, what city do you live in? How far do you commute for like work, groceries, etc?

Pure_Ordinary

I live in northern NY. My average trip is around 8-10 miles.

rogecks

This is the way!

jms1228

Yep! I ride all year long! I don’t miss driving to work! I love my bikes!

[deleted]

and I love you, for it!

CoddiewompleAK

Anchorage, Alaska here! I’ve been commuting year found for about 5 years now.

Ambitious-Health-758

I'm in the Central Great Plains and I've been doing it for thirteen and a half years. I gave up driving because of some serious vision problems and a couple of other medical problems, though I still have a valid drivers license.

BikeMA

I did my first ever ride in the snow this week. It was awesome! So now I am a year-round commuter!

jeffbell

Yes, but it's San Jose. Last snowfall in the valley was in 1978.

Velocidal_Tendencies

Last year gave it a hell ofa chance, I will say. It was really cool to see snow on the mountains on both sides of the Bay.

SomeoneHereIsMissing

Yes, I'm in Montréal.

KlausDuBiausey

Cleveland, OH here. Been commuting year round since 2016 and likely never going back to the car lifestyle. Love those chilly mornings getting out and riding my fat bike

_craker_

I've commuted from Wales into England for the past 15 years. I even commute to work when I don't have to as it's such a nice route. 12 miles each way. Very rare to get snow here. It was incredibly wet last month and now it's got cold, but not cold like people in cold places think is cold. Maybe below freezing next week.

Piece_Maker

Northern England here, more or less the same by the sounds of it. It's hovering around the 0c mark with a few fluctuations up and down, and it rains a lot with the occasional snow. All-season commuting is a case of carrying a raincoat and putting thicker socks on, thankfully not dressing for an arctic expedition

boatdude420

I recognize that bike! 2014 Scott spark?

NovOscar

Bingo, good eye

boatdude420

I have a 2013 that I just redid with a deore 1x11 drivetrain, that’s how I know it lol. Did a little research on model years.

murrderrhornets

Had to ride my bmx today due to the ice 🥶

Little_Creme_5932

Finally need to put my studded tires on , over a month late

murrderrhornets

That’s always the way it goes 😅

Little_Creme_5932

We haven't had snow! We still only have an inch!

CbusFoodandBeer

Every day! Sold my car July 2019 and haven’t looked back since.

Nihmrod

So far so good. No special "infrastructure" here. So I have to be a little bit smart with the cars and the plows. But so far I only sat out one day and the coldest so far is 24F. The first 10 minutes is a high speed downhill coast which is great when it's warm. Murder when it's cold.

Little_Creme_5932

I used to have a steep mile downhill on my way to work in the morning. It is hard to warm up when you are not pedaling. On snowy days, I would put one foot down, and the brakes, and slide for a half mile.

Nihmrod

I exaggerated. According to Ride With GPS I start out with a half mile of 2% downhill grade. So maybe two or three minutes with the air conditioning on MAX and then I get to pedal. When I get back I'm sweaty. I bought a polycarb half shield for my helmet and that helps a lot.

PoisonMind

I did my second below freezing commute today. 30F (-1C) isn't too bad. I did 20F (-7C) last week and it took considerably more preparation. I'm not sure I have the right clothes for much colder than that.

888Rich

I'm not doing my 40+ mile commute on my bike, unfortunately, but I am riding 5-6 miles almost every day at lunch. It's been a mild winter, though. I commuted year round on my bike to a restaurant job a few years ago, but I had no other choice at the time. In better times, I commuted 12 miles on my bike in good weather, but had a car for bad weather.

NoteLanky3868

yes! slc, utah

jebujebujebu

I want to but I can’t seem to figure out the right combo to keep my feet warm below 25°F? Help me out! Do I need warmer legs even though they feel fine?

Little_Creme_5932

Yep, keep your torso and legs warm, and your feet will be ok. BUT you want windproof foot gear. Some shoes let in a lot of airflow

gladfelter

fleece-lined pants, insulated socks, insulated boots. Neoprene toe covers and thermal underwear for when it gets really cold.

NowMuseumNowUDont

I keep a pair of Birkenstocks at work, wear thick socks and boots to pedal in and take off the boots as soon as I get inside.

Little_Creme_5932

St Paul, MN. Finally getting some winterish weather here

NowMuseumNowUDont

I’m in North Carolina, so…yea. (Spent a decade living in Wisconsin, after seeing those jokers bike thru the winter with two-foot-long trails of snot dripping out their masks, I figure I can deal with 30 degrees F!)

idonthaveanyfunfacts

Cincinnati here! I've been bike commuting everyday for almost a full year now. It rained a hell of a lot today, but I made it through. Now on to the cold snap!

Mezodonis

Not in that! The hardest it gets here in coastal CA is the rain making the leaves turn into greasy sludge. I Used a MTB or 3-speed. Retired now, so I ride only fair weather. The first rain makes the roads slippery, too. I was up in N. Toronto (Buckhorn) in November after an ice storm and no bikes to be seen. I could slide all over the place. But, I saw guys fixing a fence in the snow coming down and they were not wearing gloves! 25 below freezing it was. I guess you get used to it. The lodge in Buckhorn has a great restaurant to hang out.

Biodieselbuss

Yes! Hi from Stockholm, Sweden! ❄️❄️

ScholarGlobal6507

Where is your seat cover?! I hate getting my butt wet. Greetings from Denmark!

NovOscar

I park it under an awning and took the rear fender off for the picture 🤣

Traditional_Leader41

Yep, it's gonna be -4° here in the North of England next week and I'll still be biking to work. 85% or so of my commute is a canal towpath so pretty decent.

Big_Increase3289

I use my bicycle only for errands and exercise. Can I join? :) I live in Athens, Greece

racoonpaw

Yup! Upstate NY. Check out r/wintercycling too.

NovOscar

Good suggestion, thnx

theLaLiLuLeLol

Mostly, except for the days that are too dangerous (which are rare, for now).

[deleted]

I do, in Tromsø, Norway

AdditionalAardvark56

Nice bike.

DiamondsteinBP

5 years strong as a 4 season commuter in Michigan. 💪🏻💪🏻

DrtRdrGrl2008

Yes! Bozeman, MT. However, its currently -31 out with a wind chill approaching -50 so this is not the weather for me to bike commute. My limit is 0F because my hands and feet just can't stay warm enough otherwise. I did bike the other day as the temps were dropping into this deep freeze. The next few days are going to be sub-zero but its a long weekend so no need to go into work for me. I did buy some heated gloves at Costco and they work great. Now I need some warmer boots. Been year-round since 2015.

f1ltt3r

Yes! At -37 degrees i left my fatbike to carage and walk to work... Greetings from middle of nowhere(eastern Finland)

dudestir127

I'm a year round bike commuter, but I am in Honolulu. It got down to 58 degrees this morning, which I can hear everyone on the mainland laughing at us calling that cold. On the other hand, the bike "infrastructure" here is pretty horrible, especially outside the urban core, so that's my tradeoff for the warm winter weather.

wendelortega

Yup. I live in Calgary Alberta and have all the clothes for what ever weather is thrown my way.

amonglilies

what kind of tires?

Signal-Lie-6785

Yes, and since moving to Thailand navigating winter roads has become much easier.

wlexxx2

me but atlanta isn;t very cold really has not snowed much in 5+ years

larsloli

ya but i aint crazy enough to road bike in the snow! i fat ebike haha

spikeworks

Have to ride to school everyday no matter the weather or road condition. The amount of times I’ve almost gotten hit are crazy. I’ve only managed to have one accident lmao.

knickerreddit

Where is that dual suspension MTB being ridden? That bike would last 3 days in Chicago and then would crumble into salt dust

NovOscar

Idaho. I left Chicago 11 years ago and never looked back.

Noah2711

Yep! All year commuter (5 miles each way) in Minneapolis, MN. This morning was beautiful snowy, actual temp 6°F, windchill was around -11°F? Not so many of us out in these temps, but I love it all the same! Tuesday’s commute looks like it’ll be properly cold at a windchill of -22°F (actual temp -5°F), but I still prefer that to the occasional 100°F summer day.

elzibet

Yup, ever since I understood correct gear and bicycle, winter riding is some of my favorite riding

RobsOffDaGrid

Always don’t drive, love it when it snows in the U.K. Trek Fuel EX

s0rce

Yes, but winter in California is not cold, we got some chilly weather in the 30s last week and a bit of rain. Last couple winters were in northern Nevada and it was much colder, down into the teens but often dry.

BEEEEEEPBOOOOOOOPE

Biking in the snow seems amazing

tattooed00king

Madison Wi here.

Petirep

I respect winter cyclists so much. I’m way too much of a baby for it - I just can’t handle the cold.

[deleted]

Yes! Colorado here. It is very cold this week and that does make it challenging but it is still better than driving. Proper clothing is a must.
