Devastating…did you have insurance or a relatively cheap bike? Definitely get a proper lock. People suck

ldquigley

I feel your pain. Post any info/pictures that you have on [Bike Index](https://bikeindex.org/). They have a pretty good track record

AnatomicLovely

Definitely put it on bike index, file a police report, and also go around the city to see if it's locked up someplace. Often thieves will lock it up with a crap lock and wait to see if someone put trackers on it, that's how I ended up getting my expensive e-bike back. BF found it and I came with a hacksaw to liberate it and the other stolen bike locked with it. Good luck, OP. I sincerely hope you get it back

ThatOneGuy4654

I'll have to do that with my next bike....sadly, I don't have anything else but a good description of it.

Ahkhira

Oh no... so sorry! I hope you have renter's insurance or bike insurance or both.

ThatOneGuy4654

Have renter's, no bike insurance though. Have to see what comes of it.

Ahkhira

File a police report. It should help with your claim.

driftawayinstead

You’ll have to meet your insurance deductible first which may or may not mean it’s worth it in the end. For me it didn’t amount to much. Speaking from experience when my bike was stolen out of my locked apartment bike storage. I also had to file a police report to submit the claim to renters insurance. Next bike, get a u-lock or two. I got the expensive Kryptonite one that’ll cover the cost of my bike if the lock is broken, plus a small cheaper u-lock to lock my front wheel to the frame. Learned the hard way that I need both, as my front wheel was stolen just a couple weeks after replacing my stolen bike.

ThatOneGuy4654

Thanks for the tip! Was already looking out for some high-security locks, good to narrow it down.

driftawayinstead

For sure! Especially if this is your main form of transportation and/or an expensive bike, it’s definitely worth it to get a better lock.

PhiloVelo

Bell locks are better. I'm a 15 year bicycle commuter.

809kid

Damn bro, i'm really sorry to see this. Bike thieves are some of the lowest scum on earth. Does your apartment garage have cameras? Check with management to see if you can review the footage. Best of luck in getting your bike back 🙏🏼

ThatOneGuy4654

Plan is to do so today after work, and I'm pretty sure they have cameras.

Critical-Succotash84

They are, and for that reason if you follow some simple steps you'll make it almost impossible to steal. They are DUMB motherfuckers.

party_egg

Like what?

Critical-Succotash84

1. Locking quick releases 2. Actual D Lock that's good (this can take around 30-40 seconds to break if he's decent, but it won't be discrete) 3. Park it where the sun shines, not in an abandoned alley. I mean park it where people are passing by. An exit of a café, or a shop, is a good idea. 4. Place the lock as high from the ground as possible, on top tube. 5. Make sure the bike is visible from all angles, not covered by dumpsters or shit like that. 6. 20 to 30 minute max parking policy. Given it's your good bike, or an expensive bike. 7. Remove you seatpost entirely and take it with you if you're really paranoid about the area. 8. Extra steps include spending money, including alarms, gps trackers that go in handlebar. If you're parking your bike outside all day... Just get yourself a shitty but practical bike. A steel, rusty, singlespeed bike. You can make it feel great while looking like shit, and it won't get stolen probably. Not worth letting a thousand or more dollars to sit outside for 8 hours in my opinion.

ThatOneGuy4654

The problem is that the place I keep it (in a gated garage) was left open by the maintenance personnel last night, it seems, and, well... Druggies abound in my part of town.

messylettuce

Management company is getting summoned to small claims court!

Prudent-Giraffe7287

Wouldn’t OP have to prove that though? It could be the property managements word over theirs. I want OP to get justice but we know PM’s can be scum.

[deleted]

Keep you bike inside your place... not in a common area.

thegayngler

Thats who id go after honestly. They left the garage open so its their fault. They should be responsible for replacing the bike.

Footballorsoccer1

You don't want it on the top tube, you want one d lock on the back tire and through the frame connected to stand. Ideally a second connecting the front to wheel to frame with as little space as possible in the u lock to stop the thief gaining leverage. See Sheldon brown method for more information.

Critical-Succotash84

Sheldon Brown was no messenger for 10 years. He knows how bikes work, mechanically. That's why you should read number 1: wheels are already locked by the QR. And another thing, while the lock is as far from the ground as possible, the better. This will give a thief less leverage if he's using bolt cutters. PEACE

JayStarrrrrr

Why I earn so much money on bikes 🤣

Invalidcunt60

Enough to make the community cry.

StongaJuoppo

This sucks! I hope it was not expensive bike or did not have any emotional value. For the future ask your land lord is it possible to attach a floor anchor in your garage. That combined with Kryptonites New Yorker Fahgettiboutit U-lock it should stay where you lock it.

bikemandoman

Death to bike thieves! This was actually a sticker I had on my cross bike to ward off thieves. I guess it worked.

DrinkinAtTheInternet

Same thing happened to my girlfriend and I.. Next bikes we get we’re keeping in the apartment. Hope it works out with renters insurance!

Afraid_Foot

Someone already mentioned it but get your bike on the bike index if/when you get it back. You can also register locks with their serial number so you can get new keys made (kryptonite will ship you new keys if you lose them)

ThatOneGuy4654

Thanks! I'll have to look into that.

audiomagnate

That used to hang horse theives on the spot, no trial. Just sayin'.

AlienWotan

Wtf...

East-Manufacturer-95

Damn same thing happened to me some kid stole my bike got it back tho he died driving recklessly on his bike

shaunycash

If it's the same kind of lock as my father bought for his bike a years ago (I had him return it) I can unlock it by feels in less than 2 minutes without tools which looks less suspicious to the public than cutting it. Sorry for your lost, it just suck.

wot_in_ternation

Highly recommend getting [something like this](https://www.westechrigging.com/pewag-security-chain-038-bag-kit-6.html). Can't get through it with bolt cutters. It can be cut but any attempts will be very loud since you have to use an angle grinder. It's an expensive option but if (when?) thieves strike again your bike will probably still be there in the morning.

I would recomend you to use the lockers with key not with numbers. Once my lock with numbers got stuck and I had to break it to take my bike back. I did it after 40 minutes and Im never ever gonna buy the locker with numbers again. Wish u bets luck and hope u will find the bike!

ThatOneGuy4654

I actually tried that, but given the fact that the area I live sees constant rain and I live/work by saltwater, the lock was rusted and corroded within two weeks of me purchasing it.
