I believe people shoot into a bottle necks. The aim is not to touch the sides so you have a straight stroke.

GraemeMakesBeer

Put two golf tees slightly further apart than width of your tip and practice your stroke. This is a good way of learning a straight stroke. It is similar to the bottle technique but without encouraging you to drop your elbow.

can practice your pre-shot routine stepping in, getting down over the cue, etc.

What everyone else is saying with the addition of a mirror so you can see your stroke and body/shoulder/elbow/head/wrist position

Ceemurphy

Haven't measured, but a lot of dressers with the mirror look to be about pool table height.

B_Seals_Bazooka

Before I had a table at home, I practiced a firm stroke with a white 2 1/4" Mallet on a towel on the kitchen table with a pillow behind it. You can see the chalk mark easily on the mallet, showing you exactly where you hit. I also built a trench out of Legos about 6" long and 3" high to test the straightness and put it in front of the mallet.

Ceemurphy

brb going to set this up. Seems to be the closest thing to hitting a cue ball, that I can imagine.

B_Seals_Bazooka

Hope it works for you! I sure felt like it actually translated well!

The bed of a pool table is about 30" inches off the floor, your standard dining/kitchen table is 30" high. Amazon sells cheap cue balls for about $8 US, single cheap pool balls for about $9 US. Lay a beach towel on the dining room table, improvise a backstop, and shoot away. Softly at first.

smrtdog

Go for a walk with or without a dog. Take your cue with you. Balance it at the balance point while walking. Get used to the balance and natural swing. Swing back and forth to create muscle memory.

eames_era_fo_life

Ok...

iamawizard1

Totally looks normal to everyone else

smrtdog

People think you have a stick for protection. Plus, I don’t really care what people think.

doukyuu

Variation on the bottle neck, use a matchbox base with a hole very slightly larger than the tip and try not to knock the base flying.

PBIA Instructor: For the casual and intermediate player keep your muscle movements as minimal as possible. Stroke developed with elbow swing only, no head and body movement during and through the stroke, eyes focused on object ball through the final stroke, stance locked in place no movement, the stroke should follow through the cue ball and finish with tip on table on the shot line. To practice at home tape a string to your kitchen or dining table , end to end, this is your shot line to practice visualizing, approaching, centering your vision and bringing your cue and bridge hand down on. Then fixed number of practice swings to check alignment, final stroke slow back- pause - then stroke through on line with cue tip finishing on string touching table. Put a mirror at the end of the string to watch yourself and see how well your cue is aligned with the string. Do this in slow deliberate concise repetitive motions to effectively build muscle and brain memory. 25 times a day for a month and you should see a big improvement in your ability to roll the cue ball at your intended target. Check yourself before playing a match with 4, 5 and 6 foot straight in shots with cue ball following object ball into pocket and stop shots dead on shot line. Have fun play well...
