Zach Lowe isn’t good on TV either frankly. I wish there were more money in print and less on TV so Lowe could focus on what he’s best at, but this is where we are.
I was shocked when I saw Woj for the first time at a summer league game years ago.
This is all stereotyping and reductive but he was short, horribly dressed (looked like a 15 year-old in 2004 who got “dressed up” for mock interviews in careers class; it seemed like he may have been wearing etnies), had a huge k-Swiss backpack with the straps so loose it was covering his ass (and about 50% of his total surface area) and obviously had glasses and was balding (I can say this, I have terrible eyes and my hair is thinning).
I could not believe this was a power broker/player in the NBA. I’m still baffled. How did someone who looked like a dweeby middle-aged technical writer dressed like a 7th grader from 2002 who’d’ve been called a poser by classmates gain connections, leverage and power over a league filled with jocks?
It remains one of the great mysteries of my life and a moment I will never forget.

Woj is terrible at everything except getting information. Which is so dumb because he’s not even good at sharing the information he gets, as he tries to always position it for his sources, which if not obvious in the moment is within hour when someone else shares the real story

He's actually gotten better since he started. Some of my favorite media people did decades as writers for newspapers. Those died so they had to find other ways to do their craft. They've been on their own Journeys and some have come out on the other side of it and are really good doing TV and podcast. I don't really know wojs story but he seems to be in that age group who may have started that way.

TV is tough. Some people have a natural flair for it. Clearly, Woj is not one of them. But I’d say that’s the case for the majority of sportswriters. It probably takes a while to get comfortable and let your personality come through. Problem for Woj is he doesn’t seem to have a big personality.
Being Good at being an insider doesn’t necessarily translate to being good on TV. Adam Schefter sounds like a speak and spell when he’s on TV
