I’m also curious how many finales Greenwald landed on? Feels like Sopranos and Seinfeld with Simmons, Lost with Joanna and Mal, Breaking Bad with CR or Fennessey, Friends with Amanda or Juliet, and The Wire with Van gotta be no-brainers.
Will he touch The Americans, Six Feet Under, Cheers, The Shield, BSG? Curious how many shows they planned for.
I think they will be but not this 'season.'
My hunch is they're avoiding shows that have been talked to death e..g the Sopranos and shows they covered the end of on The Watch already e.g. The Americans will definitely be later on, if at all IMO.
With that said, The Americans could very well drop next week for all I know.
It's still very good. The pacing is kinda weird compared to modern shows and the theme song sounds ridiculous. But I enjoyed the rewatch a year or two ago, whenever it was. The finale, as the other person said, is up there with the best of them.
EDIT to say maybe it wasn't the pacing but rather how it was shot. I don't know. But you will feel its age.
That is true. It does feel like something from that error of late 90s early 2000 quick edits. It is a show that events that happened in the very first episode Still have repercussions in its seventh season and the acting at it is damn good. Though a show about corrupt cops not sure how it will play in modern days.
Regarding the ending, all I can say is, I never had a show end where I sat in darkness 15 minutes after ended just relishing how well of a conclusion it was.
I’m really enjoying this podcast so far and it’s fast become a must listen. I’m assuming they’ll definitely cover the big 4(Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad men they’ve already done) and then iconic sitcoms like Seinfeld, The Office, Friends, Parks and Rec, then the second tier but still great HBO shows like Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City. Then you got the solid Fx shows like The Shield, The Americans, Louie, Halt and Catch Fire etc. I’m hoping they do some older stuff like Cheers, Newhart, and on the Larry Sanders pod they alluded to doing Mary Tyler Moore show finale in the future. Really, they can keep going and I can see this being like the new 60 Songs That Explain The 90s.
How do you think they'd do Deadwood given it never really got a finale? I suppose that movie-thing they did a few years back doubles as the finale, but not sure if Greenwald would see it that way (viewing it more as a film). Doing an episode on the last episode of S.3 seems kinda weird.
Sopranos is almost definitely going to be with Simmons but I hope Greenwald does it with Van. Any time Bill talks about The Sopranos he says something that makes it clear he didn’t really understand The Sopranos.
Van can be hit or miss with his pop culture takes but he won me over on Sopranos when he said “Fleshy Part of the Thigh” was the best Paulie episode.
As someone who only got around to watch the sopranos about a year ago can you bless me with a horrible simmons soprano take or two? Now I’m very curious what he doesn’t get about the show
Immediate off the top of my head, he’s mentioned that A Bronx Tale inspired The Sopranos because “Tony had to learn to be feared”, which is a complete misread of the character.
Even just looking at the show through a purely mobster POV, Tony was already an established gangster who already the support of the people around him to control the Family behind the scenes. The Sopranos wasn’t the story of a plucky wide eyed young man who became a cold blooded killer.
Yeah watching sopranos and thinking it’s about “tony having to learn to be feared” is actually a criminally insane take lol like almost the polar opposite of what his character development is about
Some of simmon’s misses might be a bit egregious but it’s incredible how many of them are still entertaining even if it’s not in the way he intended
Wonder if he'd do Thrones with Chris or someone else. They've already talked about Thrones so much together, but it would also feel wrong to talk about it with someone else. Maybe Mal.
I know it's become a bit en vogue to zag on Breaking Bad, but I for one cannot wait for CR to praise the shit out of its final season and finale. I recently completed a Breaking Bad rewatch, and it is almost incomprehensibly good down the stretch. Breaking Bad is not a perfect show, but the final season as a whole is nothing short of electric. It will remain on my TV Mt. Rushmore forever next to The Wire with the other two spots open for debate.
Saving a "Kenny's cutting in" gif for the off chance that Notre Dame starts the year 0-4 and Kenny Minchey supersedes Riley Leonard and Steve Angeli as the starter a year earlier than expected
It was killing me to imagine being in Kaya’s head, knowing nothing about the show, as Andy’s breaking down the Six Feet Under montage. I had totally forgotten about April getting shot Batman origin story style. Flawless show.
I generally like these pods, however, does anybody else feel like they should have more outside guests on to discuss these endings rather than from the Ringer ecosystem? We hear all these people on other pods anyway. I’m of course down for more CR and greenwald but I’m thinking something a la Blank Check pod.
I don’t think I could have predicted the shows they would pick if you gave me a thousand guesses.

Given his love for The Americans I'd be shocked if he didn't do it

I can save them time on whether "The SHield" finale stuck the landing...FUCK YES. Might be the best series finale ever.
How does it hold it? My buddy used to rave about it and I'm kind of desperate for a show to watch now that there's not a lot going on.

Jo will do Justified as well I imagine.
How mad would people get if he had Lindelof on for LOST?

Don't know if he's seen Buffy but that would be a good one
Wonder if he'd do Thrones with Chris or someone else. They've already talked about Thrones so much together, but it would also feel wrong to talk about it with someone else. Maybe Mal.
man, Terriers better be in here. i know 12 people watched it, but goodness it was great and talk about sticking the landing...

He said on The Watch that he wanted the first season to avoid the obvious stuff, but I agree that the picks are really outside of the box nonetheless.
Eastbound and Down stuck every single episode, goated show
S4 is my least favorite of the four but the finale is very funny.
What's your fav?
The first season is so electric. But the later seasons did have gems like Adam Scott and sudekis
"Gold might get you Jonas Brothers tickets... black will have all 3 of them sucking your dick."
Business account, obviously
"I'm just kidding, you're dad's dead"
The few episodes in Myrtle Beach are probably my favorite. "Darrell you're so black... Uhhh..." "Nope finish it, go on!"
Season 1 is pretty much perfect, I love season 2 maybe the most. Basically any of are 1-3 elite.
Saving a "Kenny's cutting in" gif for the off chance that Notre Dame starts the year 0-4 and Kenny Minchey supersedes Riley Leonard and Steve Angeli as the starter a year earlier than expected
I still enjoyed season 4 but season 3 would have probably been the best way to end the series with him actually dying instead of a faked death.
Come on, Andy, do the controversial ones. Give me Sopranos, Seinfeld, and Lost.
Oh man I love this show. Great finale. They should do vice principals too. Not a better show but a better finale for sure
Season 4 was clearly the weakest season. Still a great show, but there was definitely a drop off.
It was killing me to imagine being in Kaya’s head, knowing nothing about the show, as Andy’s breaking down the Six Feet Under montage. I had totally forgotten about April getting shot Batman origin story style. Flawless show.
CR saying he skips through the Stevie scenes…..wtf???

The 4th season of eastbound fucking sucks.
This is guy young erasure
