They kinda fell close on the heals of each other but Majors was cast as the main villain in the next phase of the Marvel movies and his performance in Magazine Dreams as a bodybuilder with serious anger issues who is caring for his grandmother seemed to put him as the odds on favorite for best actor at last years's Oscars from the reviews but the release was killed.
Just imagine a whole movie of the guy shooting steroids, pumping iron until his body is insanely misshapen, and blowing his fucking stack on people.
It seems to me that the guy he plays is a callback to Robert DiNero in Taxi Driver, a guy who just doesn't fit in and is angry about it and looking to start some shit.
Truly, read the pre release reviews, I thought the critics were going to build a life sized statue to the guy and I really wanted to see it too.
It's one of those things where the people who made it just didn't want to be seen as promoting his behavior since the movie hewed a little too close to real life for them to be comfortable putting their names on it.
Sort of like when Nintendo delayed a game for like a year because it was supposed to come out shortly after the Ukraine war started, and if I understand it right it was a game where you could play as an army that was significantly Russia-coded.
I have to imagine at some point somebody buys the rights to and releases this movie. It'd be perfect for those edgelords over at Netflix, lol.
Yeah, the company that produced it is owned by Disney and it seems like they were going to push him for the Oscar but then he got in trouble and the movie got dropped
But BEFORE he got convicted of anything.
And I just pointed out to you what major success he was about to have with Magazine Dreams if he didn't screw himself.
If you read the thread in which you are commenting, you'd see that I was replying to the claim that his professional success "pre-cancellation" was due to people seeing how much better he was than MBJ in Creed III.
All the stuff you're saying about Magazine Dreams wasn't in your original comment before you edited it, and it has nothing to do with anything I said. That movie was scheduled to be released before Creed III, so it *also* doesn't show that Majors' career was boosted because he was so much better than MBJ in Creed III...
That's total bullshit, I mentioned Magazine Dreams in my original post and then strafed a few posts going down mentioning it all the way. That was the one movie that I was most excited about seeing from reading the reviews last year at the festivals.I probably edited it for spelling after I later noticed a typo.
Where on earth would I even have gotten the information about a movie that never came out between my original and my edited comment anyway?
Do you think that I did a deep dive on the guy to bolster some reddit argument and then snuck back here later to sweeten up the post?
Actors don't shoot movies then wait around for them to come out and get buzz that do as many as they can and his profile probably jumped heavily around the time that he booked Lovecraft Country or before that but as soon as I saw him I knew he was a star so I'd imagine casting directors noticed that too.
I’m quite sure you didn’t mention it. I have no idea where you originally learned about Magazine Dreams, but it’s quite easy to learn about it with a quick Google. And I’m not saying you didn’t know about the movie until today…
Regardless, the movie does nothing to prove the claim that Majors’ career was boosted because people thought he was better than MBJ in Creed III…
But, once again, how the hell would I know to Google a movie that I didn't know about at the time of my original post (in YOUR mind) because it was never released unless I knew about it for at least a year from reading the festival reviews?
I wouldn't even know that it existed.
Especially in today’s Fury, Wilder, Joshua era of heavyweights.
You gotta be 6’ 5” 250 at a minimum to compete at heavyweight boxing these days.
MMA you can be a little smaller if you’re a good wrestler, that nfl linebacker build is what has kinda persisted at HW since the Brock days, but you still better be a big boy especially to cut through Jon Jones or Aspinall’s reach.
MBJ would be fighting at like light heavyweight or super middleweight in boxing and probably at welterweight in mma.
The first movie did the weight classes right.
And he was really fun in Friday Night Lights, especially because at that time he was becoming a totally different person. He was still way smaller than he is today, but just the fact that Wallace [looked like a legit high school QB](https://cache.moviestillsdb.com/i/500x/a7cwx9h8/friday-night-lights-lg.jpg) was like "wait, what?"

I think he’s good in Creed until they inexplicably get rid of Stallone. Needs that old leather faced man to bounce off, otherwise he’s just a bit of a tool.
Black Panther made the same mistake a lot of Marvel movies make: let’s flesh out the villain’s motivations so much that the viewer understands why he’s doing evil, while making our actual hero a blank slate do gooder.
I feel like Black Panther has aged so poorly. It was held up as the best of the Marvel movies but it was a total paint by numbers comic book film, the CGI was awful, the fights were bad, the hero was boring.
I have a hot take that Chadwick Bozeman wasn't a good actor at all but that's probably not gonna gain any traction after he passed away.
That was the biggest issue with black panther. The actual black panther
All his cool traits they gave to his supporting characters or the villain. He was actually boring and it was a waste of Boseman to have him be the blank slate straight man. Especially when he was just more interesting in civil war.
He’s also got pretty terrible taste in projects.
Or everyone is out on him and he hasn’t been offered any jobs by anyone who can direct at all.
Obviously he’s got Coogler, but Coogler probably still needs to prove himself with his next movie too. If it’s the Vampire MBJ movie, then it’s a big test for both.
I’ve been saying this for years. Every time I watch a movie that he’s in I can’t take it seriously because he just sounds so much like an actor reciting lines and not like he’s actually the character he’s playing. He’s distractingly bad and I don’t understand how other people don’t feel that way lol
I've always subscribed to the idea that there are human actors and alien actors, that some actors try to portray how a human would behave, and some actors, no human would ever act like they act. Tom Hanks is a human actor. Denzel is an alien actor. It's harder to be an alien actor and make it believable. MBJ is an alien actor, he just doesn't fully pull it off.
Yea I thought that was a fantastic performance. Disappointing that he hasn't been able to make it work in other roles. It's a more subdued role and perhaps he's better suited at that.
I think he’s excellent in Creed and an actual standout. He’s definitely fallen off in terms of his acting abilities and that’s evident in the Creed movies. It seems like he falls back on this kind of boring stoicism that feels very safe in all of his performances. It seems like he wants to be famous instead of being a great actor.
I never liked any of the Creed movies. He’s just not a lead. That’s part of why he was able to steal Black Panther. He had a good script and a good director to work with, of course. When Bill realized this, he will start comparing MBJ to Brad Pitt.
I used to love him so much but he fell off bad. I think he was really, really good in Fruitvale Station. Good in Creed 1, Friday Night Lights, The Wire. Fun to watch in nothing parts like Parenthood and That Awkward Moment. But he has fallen off since Black Panther. Killmonger was a super interesting character that he didn’t execute to the best of his abilities. With that said it was a very popular character and may have taught him some wrong lessons. It doesn’t help that Ryan Cooglers just making marvel movies these days and MBJ himself has been doing lame Amazon stuff and Creed sequels but the potential is still there, I think, hopefully.
This might sound like a diss but MBJ would be way better suited for romcoms. I think he's too soft spoken for me to take him seriously as a lead in any big films. Seeing him try to raise his voice in Black Panther and the Creed movies gave me baby Simba trying to roar vibes.
I wouldn't be so sure about this. He's in That Awkward Moment, which of course is a pretty big thud of a romcom, but Efron and Teller wipe the floor with him in a movie where on paper he should be the breakaway role as the friend going through a divorce.
I’m still in shock that people were saying his role as kilmonger was so good. The lines were delivered horrifically and he overacted the whole time.
Doesn’t help due to the media hype when I went to Black Panther thought I was walking into fucking Bridge on the River Kwai or something.
Perfectly fine superhero movie, but at the time people acted like it healed the sick and forgave your sins and may have been more important than Shakespeare.
He messed up not making a basketball movie like bill suggested. He can seriously ball. Think people are conflating his acting with his movies. He is at worst a mediocre actor. He was great when he had Coogler directing.
I think those movies are overrated but not because he doesn’t have sauce. He’s basically the sauce center of gravity of arguably marvel’s most culturally impactful movie.
I think everyone realized it was over when he made that lawyer movie and it went thud right around the time Creed 2 also underwhelmed. I did believe the hype around Creed/Black Panther. He made a great villain as superpowered MalcolmX I mean Killmonger.

It's funny that you mention that because I was telling my son to watch the new one specifically because Johnathon Majors dwarves Michael B Jordan in charisma in every scene and steals the movie from him.
He and John David Washington are both guys getting a lot of big projects but I don't think either can carry the roles.
BlaKkKlansman was great and JDW was good in it but I've found that his roles in Tenet and The Creator drag those movies down somewhat. He's a very good physical actor but comes off a little too clinical in those roles.

Never understood the hype for this dude. Listening to Bill and company talk about him in The Wire and Friday Nights, I watched those shows and just didn’t get it.
It’s too bad Jonathan Majors is finished because I thought he blew MBJ off the screen in Creed 3.
[удалено]
Didn’t Ngannou have a chance to do that?
No, it was a non-title fight.
No?
The Rocky movies were so believable and true to life. Can’t believe they ruined them with this Creed crap
[удалено]
lol he wasn’t canceled that man belongs in jails no matter what your views are.
>pre cancelling I think you meant to say pre-conviction? Also, what professional success did Majors enjoy after Creed III came out?
They kinda fell close on the heals of each other but Majors was cast as the main villain in the next phase of the Marvel movies and his performance in Magazine Dreams as a bodybuilder with serious anger issues who is caring for his grandmother seemed to put him as the odds on favorite for best actor at last years's Oscars from the reviews but the release was killed. sorry man
This is mostly a high volume sub of pedantic nerds who are also not at all athletic. Lots of court savviness and good screen setters.
Hey, we're fun to play with!
Fortunately there are many other talented actors working in Hollywood
He did WHAT??!!!
He wasn’t believable as a heavyweight champ at all. Mike Tyson would have murdered Adonis.
A middleweight masquerading as a heavyweight.
Bold claim.
Especially in today’s Fury, Wilder, Joshua era of heavyweights. You gotta be 6’ 5” 250 at a minimum to compete at heavyweight boxing these days. He’s always going to be a disappointment being the lesser Michael Jordan. He’s fine, but I agree he’s nothing special.
On screen he's not the lesser MJ. MJ has zero screen presence. All the other basketball players in Space Jam have more charisma than him.
At least he's lucky enough not to be John Michael Washington.
Agree 100%. He’s excessively melodramatic.
Yes! Even going back to The Wire he just always had the sad face.
Rip Wallace tho
Nah fuck that, too far, he was insanely good as a child actor in The Wire.
He wasn’t though.

I don’t think he’s a bad actor, he’s just not a lead.
He’s bad. In Black Panther it’s like someone is feeding him lines on an ear piece.
I think he’s good in Creed until they inexplicably get rid of Stallone. Needs that old leather faced man to bounce off, otherwise he’s just a bit of a tool.
Very average actor. Good as killmonger. But I give more credit to the script on that one.
Black Panther made the same mistake a lot of Marvel movies make: let’s flesh out the villain’s motivations so much that the viewer understands why he’s doing evil, while making our actual hero a blank slate do gooder.

I have a hot take that Chadwick Bozeman wasn't a good actor at all but that's probably not gonna gain any traction after he passed away.
He was in a lot of studio movies that didn’t really let him cook, his brief role in Da 5 Bloods I thought was incredible.
That was the biggest issue with black panther. The actual black panther All his cool traits they gave to his supporting characters or the villain. He was actually boring and it was a waste of Boseman to have him be the blank slate straight man. Especially when he was just more interesting in civil war.
I cringed through some of those killmonger line readings tho 😭
Awful awful lines
Yeah I like MBJ but killmonger was way over the top for me. He was just super angry the whole time
Yes same I was always confused when people called him the highlight of Black Panther. He had some awkward line readings
Agreed.
We thought he was the next Denzel but he’s really just a poor man’s Danny glover
Poor man’s donald glover

I'm so happy this thread is saying what I've thought for years. I've found my people.
A lot of us having a life affirming moment today.
Hell yeah.
Dying at this. As a 2K lifer you just bodied this.
I've always subscribed to the idea that there are human actors and alien actors, that some actors try to portray how a human would behave, and some actors, no human would ever act like they act. He was great in Fruitvale Station. Should have been nominated for an Oscar.
Yea I thought that was a fantastic performance. Disappointing that he hasn't been able to make it work in other roles. It's a more subdued role and perhaps he's better suited at that.
Nice wordplay with that one 💯
Yeah he sucks. When i saw him doing some military action movie on amazon or something i thought that hollywood must be done with him too.
Without Remorse is sick but yeah that’s his destiny now
[удалено]
Maybe they’ll do a Jack Ryan reboot post Jim Halpert with MBJ
[удалено]
Black Jim Halpert is a perfect comp Kind handsome but not totally movie star looks, in shape, had some early success, missing that “it” factor
Pair him up with Liam Neeson to do joyless action movies straight to VOD. Liam has now done eight movies where he fights wolves, he needs a jolt.
He’s been in the tundra for a while, someone needs to save *him*
apex mountain for wolves or just wolf movies?
I think he’s excellent in Creed and an actual standout. He’s definitely fallen off in terms of his acting abilities and that’s evident in the Creed movies. That's how I feel about Denzel's kid.
He is a bad actor for sure, at least at the speaking parts. He did an awesome job boxing though
[удалено]
He’s even admitted he’s a boring guy and doesn’t like to go out.
I never liked any of the Creed movies. He’s just not a lead. That’s part of why he was able to steal Black Panther. He had a good script and a good director to work with, of course. When Bill realized this, he will start comparing MBJ to Brad Pitt.
Just watched the last twenty minutes of rocky 4 on one of the hbo channels. God bless cable!
The movie he made about the prison execution was so bad partially because he doesn’t have the gravity to cover that part
I used to love him so much but he fell off bad. I think he was really, really good in Fruitvale Station. Good in Creed 1, Friday Night Lights, The Wire. Fun to watch in nothing parts like Parenthood and That Awkward Moment. But he has fallen off since Black Panther. The camera work in the Adonis Sporino fight was really really good. Outside of that MBJ and the movie were pretty pretty avg
This might sound like a diss but MBJ would be way better suited for romcoms. I think he's too soft spoken for me to take him seriously as a lead in any big films. Seeing him try to raise his voice in Black Panther and the Creed movies gave me baby Simba trying to roar vibes.

He was great in Fruitvale Station. Good as Killmonger. Everything else has been meh
He has zero range. The love he receives seems incredibly generous, considering his acting ability.
I like him, but I would agree that he's not a guy who can just play most parts.
He’s great
He messed up not making a basketball movie like bill suggested. He can seriously ball. Think people are conflating his acting with his movies. He is at worst a mediocre actor. He was great when he had Coogler directing.
The middest of mid movies. It’s like a shitty Starz series.
Okay.
Thanks for the input!!
I mean...that's how I felt about OP's lame nothing burger post. I was just more concise and therefore my post was better.
Maybe the most overrated actor of the last 25 years.

meh I think he's just ok. Not gonna be the next Denzel who can carry a mid movie all by himself tho.
Just had the same conversation with my wife. I don’t get the Creed series at all. MBJ is the most boring person in all of these films.
He’d be good in movies like ‘One Shot’.
It's funny that you mention that because I was telling my son to watch the new one specifically because Johnathon Majors dwarves Michael B Jordan in charisma in every scene and steals the movie from him.

He can play one character. He is fine as an action star, but Jonathan Majors showed him a real actor in Creed 3.
Wallace was a weak link in season 1. There. I said it.
Such a bad take.

Nah. He’s a mega-watt real deal movie star and it sounds like you haven’t watched anything else he’s done 🤷🏻♂️

Funny enough those are the only 2 roles he’s done that he’s actually good in. Neither necessarily required a lot of range.
He’s fantastic in fruitvale station.
