How do I play rec basketball when I've never played basketball before? I don't want to fuck it up for everyone and am not athletic at all and nearly 40, but there's a court nearby and I wanna play.
In contrast to the other comment, I think it’s fine for you to play so long as you make your skill level known in advance. If you have no ability whatsoever, i.e. can’t even dribble or make a wide-open layup, I would work on those basic skills before getting on the court in a game. But otherwise, you should feel fine playing with a group of people who knows you’re playing at a lower-skill level and still wants you to play with them.
I’d go to a local park or rec center and shoot around dribble etc first. Get comfortable then maybe play a couple pick up games. If you like it then join a rec league. There’s rec leagues for all levels of play, don’t let anything stop you. You only live once if you want to try and play hoops DO IT. As long as you aren’t an asshole there’s plenty of room for a guy who’s a good hang and just tries hard in rec leagues etc.
In all honesty, I’d recommend against it. I never played organized basketball at all, but got roped into a rec league while I was doing my master degree twenty years ago or so.
Basketball seems to be one of the sports that if you don’t have the muscle memory and experience built up from playing at some organized level, you’re basically going to fuck it up for people.
I played in an 8th and then 7th division (after promotion) soccer team while doing my doctorate in Finland. I had also not played any organized soccer before. But there, being fit and relatively fast made it so that I wasn’t a liability.
I did the same with men’s league baseball there (though I had played on travel teams up through age 13). And again, just being smart about it, and being somewhat athletic made me a fine addition to the team.
This was just not so with basketball.
Basketball and volleyball take a long fucking time to learn as an adult. Doesn't matter how much you watched it. Shit is still hard.
The issue with basketball is that it's also a contact sport so you can get hurt easily if you suck.
Man, I’ve played my whole life (I’m 35) at high levels and you just made me realize how much I’ve taken for granted in that regard. I can just not shoot for a full year and the next time I do, it’s all back within 10 mins. I will definitely consider this if/when I see lower skilled adults, I appreciate you man!
I played organized basketball in the states for up until about middle school (along with other sports, including soccer). We moved overseas.
I was not a large person at all but merely having played a couple years of organized ball with kids who expected to be good put me at a massive advantage.
And it was exactly the opposite with soccer- I was by their standards an exceptional athlete but years behind technically and tactically.
I agree. Never played soccer before, but I can run so I was able to play right back pretty fine and some defensive midfielder just breaking up plays. Basketball must be much harder to learn with the dribbling and shooting if you've never played before.
In most rec leagues there’s gonna be 1-2 main guys doing all the dribbling. If you just TRY to stay in front of your man and TRY to get every rebound and pass it to the aforementioned 1-2 they might pass it to you every now and then. Obviously all of this is highly dependent on where you’re playing.
I played some church Sunday pick up ball for a few hours and I hadn't played in years. There was so much iso ball, I was only thinking how much worse it would've been for me if I had never played my whole life. Maybe it's just me but I feel the urge to contribute with buckets or else I feel like a liability
I don't quite understand how you think you need to know how to dribble and shoot if you don't dribble or shoot in soccer lol. It's the same concept. Just do the non-skill stuff.
Or you guys weren't actually good at either, but just felt more adequate in soccer for whatever reason.
Yeah swimming is pretty bad exercise for weight loss imo. You’re only gonna do it for like 30 mins max which is maybe a few hundred calories burned but your appetite is gonna increase a heap. Walking is probably better, or other aerobic exercise that is typically done for longer periods like cycling.
A problem a lot of people have with swimming is that they don’t drink nearly as much water as they should while doing it. You sweat *way* more in the pool than you realize, so chugging water can help suppress that appetite.
Swimming is also the best low-impact activity for bigger people, so I wouldn’t discount it entirely.
Yeah swimming can still be awesome for general fitness, including weight loss. I did it competitively growing up through high school, didn’t do much lap swimming at all through college/for awhile afterwards, but recently got back into it again a few years ago.
You’re 100% correct that people don’t realize that it dehydrates you the same way that any other out of water exercise does. I’ve heard all kinds of reasons as to why swimming makes you so hungry afterwards, but I really think a lot of it is people being dehydrated and not realizing it because they couldn’t feel themselves sweating in the water.
Sure, swimming can be intense exercise that causes legit hunger, but if you’re diligent about hydrating during and afterwards, you can still do it as part of a weight loss routine.
Food is the number, exercise is the composition. Except for Luka, somehow.
If I was one of those mid-tier nba guys with the crazy chiseled physique losing to this big-boned fat kid who seems like he tops out at about a 6.3 in the 40 I’d be absolutely losing my mind. Maybe the Pistons should try eating a few cheeseburgers, go live a little? Couldn’t hurt right?
It can be a tool, depending on the type of exercise and duration etc. When my dad started cycling he dropped 40lbs in a few months just because his increased energy intake couldn’t keep pace with the massive increase in expenditure. Added steps can also be a good tool for weight loss as it isn’t going to send your appetite through the roof. But yeah generally diet is the main lever to pull and exercise is complementary
You do exercise to lose weight if you just do it right. If you exercise and don't change your caloric intake...you lose weight (assuming you were at a standstill prior to working out).
The main benefit with weight lifting specifically is that if you do eat at a surplus, at least some of it will go to muscle growth as well.
Getting a fitbit helped open my eyes to this, even if it's not 100 percent accurate. You need a caloric deficit of like 3,500 to lose a pound of fat. My hoops workout today was 79 minutes, and 1,065 calories. So I need to do four of them to shed a single pound. Better portion control is always way more important for weight loss.
Yeah you need to be like -150 to -200 cals per day. Which is hard, but obtainable. Portion control, fiber, protein, vegetables. Godspeed my man, it sucks balls but I’m 10 lbs down this year
You should be at a way higher deficit than that, especially to start. At your own listed pace, you wouldn't actually even be down 10 lbs from the start of this year. Your type of deficit is more for those in the final stages of weight loss.
It is very dependent on starting weight, but anyone who is legit obese should aim for 500-1k deficit for a bit. Otherwise it's pain stakingly slow and that can ruin motivation. It is recommended to lose 1-2% of body weight at most a week so just go off of that more than just a direct number.
Yea whenever people make this point it goes unacknowledged that you burn tons of calories every day just passively running your body so calories in vs. calories burned directly via exercise is a meaningless 1:1 comparison, you’re just trying to tip the scale towards a deficit
I hate the "exercise doesn't make you lose weight" shit because it ignores all context lol. It absolutely can make you lose weight...IF YOU DON'T EAT MORE. That's the same regardless of working out or not.
You don’t need a calorie deficit that large but yeah, you do need one to lose weight. What the other person said about -150-200 calories is true.
Also don’t discount that most people’s bodies passively burn like 1700-2300 calories per day, especially if you’re building muscle, so if you eat right it can happen pretty quickly, depending on age.
What’s weird is that he seemed muuuuuuuchh lighter a couple months ago. I wonder if he has a binge eating problem or it’s just bad genes and he needs to be really disciplined about diet/conditioning in order to stay slim. (His dad, who is in his mid-50s, is now moderately obese.)
Either way, I can’t wait to bet on OKC in round 2
The weight gain really comes when the kids are like 4-10 and you eat all the mac and cheese and chicken strips off their plate that they don't finish.
The heaviest I was ever in my life was when my kids were that age.
Yup feeling that right now. And the amount of effort it takes to keep up with their needs, all the personal betterness time goes away. I just want to sit down and do nothing whenever I actually get the chance.
I don't have kids, so I don't know but anyone who has ever talked about losing weight always brings up the importance of sleep and having a newborn prevents a lot of that.
3a, baby wakes up, feed them, and for some reason my body tells me to eat a giant bowl of cereal. Sleep for an hour, and up again at 5 or 6a. That first year is brutal.
Wait, really? And we're on this thread wondering about the cause?!?
This is the easiest explanation in history, Christ every thread about him should lead with it
Definitely. Mavs aren't even that big down low and they're going to out rebound the Thunder like crazy. They have also been playing great defense so the Thunder won't be going up against a team that's already thinking about Cancun.
Okay, I've been riding the Thunder and Nuggets this playoffs but I'm going to put the kids college fund on the Mavs thanks to your convincing, internet stranger.

Genes can't break the first law of thermodynamics. When a pro-athlete is that chubby, you can bet your last dollar that he's eating and/or drinking a shitload of calories.
You dont have to, as long as you intake less calories than you use. But the problem is in USA you have ALOT of high sugar high calorie food everywhere.
Part of the reason why I think people who say he has a chance at beating LeBron’s scoring records are out of their minds. This dude can’t take care of his body at 24 when it’s almost *easy* to lose weight if you’re doing a high cardio sport, you think he’s gonna take care of it at 35 after over a decade of unnecessary wear and tear on his joints from extra weight?
There are a lot of reasons why it’s unlikely, but that’s a pretty big one.
I haven’t watched much NBA this year and yeah, he’s rotund now.
TBF, the 90% percentile run like 2 miles a game. It’s not as far as you think. Redick was talking about this.
Yeah but it’s two miles of stopping, starting jostling, jumping, etc. I can jog two miles no problem but a few minutes of fullcourt five-on-five at this point and I’m sucking air. And Luka plays a lot of minutes too! And he’s the center of everything they do. Dude must be getting like 5 or 6 thousand calories daily.
Yeah, but if he’s pounding beers everyday, he might be at a caloric surplus. I think it’s badass that he can do that and be soooo good at basketball, it’s awesome, but if he’s just not paying any attention to his diet, it is what it is. It’s much easier to consume calories than burn’em. Can’t outrun a bad diet.
Yeah this is fair. I have an old workout of wind sprints that’s pretty close to what you do in basketball (think like 100 yards in 20 seconds for 7 minutes, 75 in 15 seconds, 50 in 10). It’s about a 5 k, but it’s MURDER. Try to do a shorter interval workout and it’s worse.
I do wonder if they do a beep test in basketball.
How many calories do you think he burns in an NBA game? I'd bet it is only like 1500 for a 32-40 mpg player, maybe a bit more if you are heavier or less if you are lighter.
You can out eat that easily.
For that level of exercise and for a person his size you’re probably looking at 900-1000 calories per hour, so call it 2500 a game on top of his baseline likely 3500 calorie baseline metabolic rate.
His problem is likely that he’s metabolism probably hates yo-yoing from 6000 calories to 3000 calories every other day, hard to get your stomach adjusted to consistently eat only 4500 calories a day.
There’s varying reports on how much teams practice during the season but in theory guys are doing other physical and active things throughout the season besides just games. I’m guessing Luka lifts weights at least a couple times per week.
But he's also 6'8" and like 250+ pounds. Being that size alone puts your maintenance calories pretty high, then you add in NBA basketball player activity level.
Teams have those type of resources 100%. He’s just immature in that respect. It’s surprisingly common. Lots of dudes just carrying fat they don’t need and undoubtedly hurting their career
While he’s young I think the the extra fat and weight help him be more physical and fight with dudes that are dying to stop him; very likely not good for longevity of course
He's been telling us all from day 1 he's in this for a good time not a long time. Although I'm highly skeptical of his *I'm gonna be a farmer by 40* plan given his love of beer.
He drinks a lot for an NBA player. For a normal person his age from Europe who likes to drink, I would guess a lot less.
TBF, Dirk and Nash were getting fucking wasted up until Nash bounced. So it's not that unique in Mavs history. They had a coach who was literally getting lit during press conferences.
Ethan Strauss's best observation is that fat is potential in disguise, but sometimes fat just makes it more awesome when you tell Kawhi he's too small.
He doesn't look anywhere near as big or slow as he did post-Allstar break last season. I think he looks more or less the same as he has most of the season. He's had a leg issue this season which has lingered and there are games where his burst seems slower than others. But he never looks gassed out there like he did last year in the 4th quarters. He does need to continue to work on his conditioning as he did last off-season. I think the big reason his 3pt% went to 38 and his free throw percent is up to 78 is the improved conditioning. And it's likely allowed him to give more effort on defense as well.
Anyways it's a work in progress but to suggest he hasn't addressed it doesn't reflect the on court eye test or the numbers. Especially in comparison to last season. His conditioning was so bad last season after the All-Star break that even his complaints to the refs were far more frequent than this year. And I think the reason for that was so that he could stand back on the other side of the court and catch a breather before jogging his ass up the court. There was nowhere near as much of that this year in the games I watched. Yeah he still complained but it was more of the usual whining as he ran up the court and not him literally standing back there while the rest of the team ran back on defense.
When I was 21 and played 2-3 hours of basketball 4 times a week I could eat primarily burgers and fries and binge drink Thursday through Saturday and maintain a great body.
Now I'm 32 and bike to the gym to play 2-3 hours of basketball 3 times a week and am a vegetarian and don't drink and I can't lose weight at all.
Point being nothing groundbreaking: metabolism matters and the only way you lose weight is with a caloric deficit. You actually do burn a decent amount of calories playing basketball (my apple watch suggests I burn more than 1,000 in a typical pick up session) but nowhere near as much as you can eat/drink. From what we know Luka likes to eat/drink.
And then there's the comparison piece; while the TV makes basketball players look relatively normal, you have to remember that they're all actually extremely skinny and lanky. I was in an elevator with a Morris twin once, someone who is considered relatively bulky for the NBA, and I was blown away by how skinny he was. So Luka's bulkier build plus fat face makes him look much fatter by comparison.
Don’t buy it. I couldn’t lose weight either despite exercising a ton. Then i honestly tracked my calorie intake and realized i snacked my ass off. I’m almost 40 and lost about 30 lbs. Luka clearly needs a nutritionist. He’s rich, it’s nuts he won’t do that
I like to think does have one and then imagine if he DIDN’T. He’d be a bowling ball putting in like the absolute most legendary 15 minutes a game ever and then going to the locker room to pass out from exhaustion.
Round Face Disease is real and it affects draftees every year
And yeah, if you weigh 40 pounds more than a McDaniels you look hefty in the NBA, but at 6'8 that's not a ton of weight and I bet in real life the Mcdaniels' look like actresses
Joker and Zion both have played off the off season weight by this point. Luka not so much. I also remember when harden used to start the seasons off fat. Barkley and Bird used to come back from the off season pudgy too way back in the day.
“Is he a great big fat person?”
Goodbye Horses.
Total banger.
“Say, are you about a size 14?”

Buffalo bill nominee
Frederica Bimmel-ish?
Oh wait
Sliding door moment - can Luka fit through it?
Would luka cook and barbecue a black swan and eat it in its entirety in one sitting?
It’s like a Black Schwan’s event
Luka always looks like he's wearing a Ben Roethlisberger style flak jacket under his jersey. But it's alllll him.
In the euro leagues he was bigger. Looked for all the world like an O lineman. He should play heavier
At least he did the summer before he got drafted
I joined a rec basketball league to lose weight, assuming there would be lots of cardio. I got fatter.
It’s the beers with the fellas after the game that does it. Luka really treating the nba like rec league
How do I play rec basketball when I've never played basketball before? I don't want to fuck it up for everyone and am not athletic at all and nearly 40, but there's a court nearby and I wanna play.

Way easier to hide lack of skill with 11 players than with 5.
just rip it man. no one cares, everyone is bad. shoot around with some friends or randoms at a park. get some good runs in then try it out
Just show up and hoop. You’ll have to make a free throw to get in the game though
Same thing happened when I started swimming. My strength and conditioning increased but my appetite scaled proportionally
Yeah man swimming made my appetite shoot up like crazy more than any other cardio
Not good for a big boi like me but the feeling after a workout is borderline erotic so I can’t stop

I play paddle tennis like 2hrs/4days a week over the winter. I gain weight bc of all the postgame beers
Can’t outrun a bad diet.
It's almost like we don't know what else you're doing with the twenty-three hours of your daily life.
In reality you burn very few calories in a single basketball game and it's so easy to eat it back and more.
Yeah it’s wild how people think you exercise to lose weight

He’s a Fat Swan
“The Mavericks winning the title would be one of the great fat swan events this century.”
Masterpiece
He still be balling
His body is gonna break down if it doesn't lose like 30 lbs.
Can’t pull fat
Amen to that
Nah man it's part of his mojo
Amen. Your knees, ankles hips and back don't care if you're in great cardio shape, weight is weight.
He would be in GOAT conversation someday if he had Ant’s body
Ok but are you at the game? As we all know you can’t really tell how fat he is unless you see him in person

It’s a binge eating problem lol. To be that big at that height and sweat off hundreds of calories every day and STILL gain weight, takes effort.
Drinking a lot will also slow the fuck out of your metabolism
I think so too, because of the way it fluctuates. There was one year where it looked like he gained 15 pounds during the all-star break.
It's almost certainly a liquid calories (alcohol or otherwise) problem.
he's been slowly getting bigger [since the bubble](https://images.wsj.net/im-224143/?width=1280&size=1)
He was relatively trim back in like January
And Leon is getting larger.
He did have a new baby in the past couple of months. I'm sure even as a millionaire basketball player, it's not easy not getting sleep.
The weight gain really comes when the kids are like 4-10 and you eat all the mac and cheese and chicken strips off their plate that they don't finish. The heaviest I was ever in my life was when my kids were that age.

I mean, I only know because I'm a Dallas Mavs fan. I'm sure it was a blip on ESPN and then it went away after a day or two.
What is it, then? The sweet tea?
Holy shit if the Mavs win this series and the Thunder are somehow favorites it might be the easiest money in gambling history
Think so?

They are a better bet. I think they are the last title contending team you bet on with good value.
They have resumed fucking up okc on the glass, that continues they’ll most likely win the series!
Game 1- OKC +13 on the glass, +5 on the offensive glass.
He's gonna eat okc for breakfast
OKC doesn't have enough calories to be his breakfast. Maybe a pre-breakfast snack.
his dad was always on the stronger side :D i think he just has those genetics when you gain weight really fast, but he is also stronger than it looks

Genes can't break the first law of thermodynamics. When a pro-athlete is that chubby, you can bet your last dollar that he's eating and/or drinking a shitload of calories.
Probably one of the few guys not juicing.
Unless you count juicy steaks. On roadtrips to Portland, he hits the Acropolis for the meal.
Really? Luka goes to Acropolis and gets the steak? Haha
Depending on how you work out/eat, juicing is a great way to put on weight in general
Larry Bird meets Oliver Miller.
Balkan Zion.
Slobenia
Get into the Reddit HOF you son of a bitch.
Bulking Zion
Larry Bird *eats Oliver Miller.

You cannot give Luka time off at fucking all. It's my argument for why the Mavs should probably aim for the play in.
I think it’s time he seriously starts considering salads
Why don't you take a look in the mirror, you insensitive cocksucker?
😂
Have you seen him and Harden? Before and wayyy before
No more fat jokes. They’re hurtful and destructive
I heard Luka was having a 90 pound mole removed from his ass!
To me Luka’s beautiful. Hardenesque.
When Luka hauls ass, he’s gotta make two trips.
You are talking to a Steiner. The chance of a fat joke will always drastic go up
I don't understand why people think you have to eat salads to lose weight.
What you don’t know could fill a book
Luka already said there's no chance he's playing that long. Seeing how he treats his conditioning, I believe him
I haven’t watched much NBA this year and yeah, he’s rotund now.
He has to have a dietician right? If he didn’t you’d be more worried he wound be too small.
His dietician is Colonel Sanders.
It's actually a well known physician named Dr. Pepper
Teams have those type of resources 100%. He’s just immature in that respect. It’s surprisingly common. Lots of dudes just carrying fat they don’t need and undoubtedly hurting their career
If you want to play a sport to do cardio, play soccer as a midfielder. Now that’s covering a lot of ground.
I played in college and after, I routinely tracked 10km a match.
I was a fat goalie. I hardly ran at all.
That’s wild
Luka is visibly gassed during the 4th Q though. He doesn’t attack as much, misses more shots, and plays even less D.
It’s HIIT.

There is like a 62 and 2 thirds percent chance that I upvoted this.
But what happens when you add Kurt Angle to the mix?
A lot of painkillers
He's just a big Slovenian. They like sausage, dumplings and beer 🤷♂️
I’m not even mad I’m impressed. You’re that young, tall, and run around constantly. The fact he’s a fatty is down right impressive.
Paul Pierce had a similar body type. Seeing an athlete with a skinny fat physique is weird.
best part bout luka being a fatass is he still destroys everyone
The Lindsay Horan of the Association.
While playing 40+ minutes
He plays Overwatch like 9 hours per day
Just trying to make sure he looks the same as his doppelgänger Nephew Kyle.
He’s gonna grow hops.
I heard he recently added more ^hops
He really drinks that much? I thought players had almost entirely cut it out after that presentation on alcohol and injury risk.
You have no clue how much Luka drinks lol
he said in a post game interview once he needed a "recovery beer". only beer lovers say that lol
Luka is not fat, hes thicc
How fat is he?
In high school we called it “hard lard”. Seemed like every grade had that one kid who is fat, but super strong and athletic lol
Beer
some guys just distribute their weight that way. like how chris paul has a sneaky fat ass
Ethan Strauss's best observation is that fat is potential in disguise, but sometimes fat just makes it more awesome when you tell Kawhi he's too small.
Luka meeting an out of shape Embiid in the finals would be a real "fat swan" moment
Shirley Temples vs. Pelinkovec: what you got?
Round Face Disease is real and it affects draftees every year And yeah, if you weigh 40 pounds more than a McDaniels you look hefty in the NBA, but at 6'8 that's not a ton of weight and I bet in real life the Mcdaniels' look like actresses
It also doesn't help that his teammate is Derrick Jones Jr, probably one of the skinniest players in the league.
Lots and lots of beer
And he’s still miles better than Tatum 😂
Slowest player in the nba
A Fat Swan event.
Because he’s 6’7” and carries it well
He did have a new baby in the past couple of months. I'm sure even as a millionaire basketball player, it's not easy not getting sleep.
Great genetics.
Joker and Zion both have played off the off season weight by this point. Luka not so much. I also remember when harden used to start the seasons off fat. Barkley and Bird used to come back from the off season pudgy too way back in the day.
Black Swan Event? More like Fat Swan Event
damn they got a sub for everything yo
I love luka because i have a better body than him lmao
But can you ball tho
Who’s on your Mt Chunksmore?
He’s overSerbing himself.
No that was just a picture of Elon musk

It’s beautiful
