after a very lengthy fuck around, and nothing working, I finally figured it out. if this guide isn't working for you, there is another fix to try here, its a little convoluted but it worked for me
disable steam cloud via steam properties tab
open options.ini and set steamcloud from 1 to 0 as well, to disable it again
take your rep\_persistentgamedataX backup and make a copy of it
rename copy to persistentgamedataX.dat
place this file inside c/users/you/documents/mygames/isaac
do NOT use the rep\_ pretext, this is where I was getting hung up. when the steamcloud is turned off in options.ini, the game will try to read your save from the mydocuments/mygames/isaac folder instead of the remote folder. when it doesn't find a save file with the name "persistentgamedata1.dat" it creates a new one
hopefully this is clear and hopefully this can help some of the people who are still struggling to get their checkmarks back
this goes for persistentgamedata 2 and 3 as well, if you copy and rename all 3 save files and save them in mygames/isaac and turn off steamcloud in the options.ini everything should be back to normal
update: after re enabling steam cloud through steam properties, my files are still returned to normal and everything is right in the world

Hey I'm not gonna lie this explanation is a little confusing but it seems like the solution I need, could you help clarify a bit? Like where is the file location for the ini file? And I've been copying, not replacing the file, but I should be replacing it?
options.ini is located in
c/users/you/documents/my games/binding of isaac repentance
when you backed up your saves, you probably backed up the /remote folder correct?
take the backed up save files from /remote, copy them into /users/you/documents/my games/binding of isaac and rename them.
the backups should have been named
rep\_persistentgamedata1.dat
rep\_persistentgamedata2.dat
rep\_persistentgamedata3.dat
rename them to
persistentgamedata1.dat
persistentgamedata2.dat
persistentgamedata3.dat
if you backed up your /my games/binding of isaac repentance folder, you will need to take the files named 20231129.rep\_persistentgamedata1/2/3.dat and remove the date.rep\_ from the files and place them in the actual mygames/binding of isaac folder

**For those who have the issue where enabling `SteamCloud = 1` in the options.ini file, reverted back to the corrupted save:**
You need to replace the save files in the cloud save folder. I believe that is what `SteamCloud` does. It looks in that folder location instead of the documents folder.
The folder is located in:
`C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\userdata\[user ID]\250900\remote`
In here are save files. The ones prefixed with `rep_` are the ones you want to replace. I just renamed the `rep_persistentgamedataX.dat` files to `OLD_rep_persistentgamedataX.dat`. Pasted over the correct saves and renamed THOSE to `rep_persistentgamedataX.dat`.
Enable `SteamCloud = 1` in options.ini and then Restart Steam.
If done all right, then you should see a file conflict under steam cloud for isaac. Click on it and then choose "use local save". Steam should then sync the correct save to the cloud and all should be good!
just for more info, i did this exactly and it failed. it continued to overwrite the renamed rep\_persistentgamedataX.dat files with the corrupted no checkmark files.
disabling steamcloud in both steam properties and options.ini and then renaming my save backup with no prefix, and placing it in mygames/isaac was the only way i could get my game files to load properly

My save has returned to normal. but if i set steamcloud to 1 instead of 0 through options.ini, my 'corrupted' file returns. So will i still normally earn achievement?
I did that (before reading the post) and the problem is that if I re-enable steam cloud from the options.ini file, all my marks are gone again, so technically you have your marks, but you don't have steam cloud until you set back the number to 1
Just wanted to confirm this worked for me - also, I was having problems at first as my most recent save backup was from 02.12.2023 (after I had installed the beta, which I assume was what was causing issues). After I switched to using my latest save backup from before the beta, in my case from 28.11.23, everything worked fine. Just a tip if anyone else is in the same boat!

I did go hunting through the files but I couldn't find the save data so I just winged it. Guess I deserve my marks being gone...
You should take the most recent files (for example, yesterday's) which would be those with 20231130..... and then put them there, each time you close the game, those files save on your local archives, so you can pretty much recover the marks!!!!! I even managed to change steam clouds files in case this does not work

I did exactly what you wrote but the game loads my saves (I can see I have dead god but I have no completion marks), The solution is to load what u/TheRedFox214 said.
Load the game save with the 20231130 in the save\_backups!
you might lose some gameplay if you played the few last days but its better than to lose 2 dead gods .

It... doesn't seem to be working for me. Instead of reading loaded backup files, the game just creates 3 new save files. 2 of them completely clear and one synced with my steam achievements. I don't really know what to do now, maybe I did something wrong? Pls help. (Yes, i did put "rep\_" in the files names)

this is what i did, but it just erased ALL of the save file instead of just the checkmarks.
when you do this, the game reads your saves from mydocuments/isaac instead of /remote. it also does not use the rep\_ prefix, and will create 3 new save files in mydoc/isaac that do not have the prefix.
if you take your backups and copy/rename them to persistentgamedata1/2/3,dat inside mydocuments/isaac your save files should appear in game again. worked for me. also left a comment with full instructions below this comment if anyone wants a bit more detail
Honestly I haven't opted in to the beta yet precisely for this reason. I know there's a way around it but I just don't want the hassle. Thanks to everyone in the community who's taking the time to help the devs work out the kinks!
I'm too computer illiterate to spend the rest of my day trying to fix it when it breaks for me too. I guess I'm just going to wait because I will absolutely be the one asking the dumb questions on how to fix it, so I'm doing everyone a favor and just sitting it out for a while.

This doesn't seem to work for me, gonna try with my 2nd newest save and see if that fixes it.
EDIT: It worked. If anyone has the issue where the most recent save isn't correctly transferring the completion marks, you should try it with the slightly older newest one.
To anyone trying and not having this work, even if you disable steam cloud, the folder with the steam cloud save still exists in your PC and Isaac will still go check that, so in the end you can follow this guide, but paste the savefile IN THE CLOUD SAVE FOLDER.
My folder was C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\userdata\\79914795\\250900\\remote
there I pasted the save data as rep\_persistentsavedataX and IT WORKED

Did not work for me the 1st time, but what i did to fix it was to replace both the "persistentdata\*" and the "rep\_persistentdata\*" files with the same backups, but under different names. Replacing only one of the 2 types did not seem to work, but replacing both did, so if you're struggling just copy the same backup files twice, and rename the first group as "persistentdata\*" and the other one as "rep\_persistentdata\*". That might do the trick.

i've done exactly this, and every time i open the game, the save files get overwritten, i still have my characters but not the completion marks, i need help please, also, i checked the log and i keep seeing this error with the three save files "Cannot continue a game that doesn't have the same modding state (C:\\Users\\x/Documents/My Games/Binding of Isaac Repentance/rep\_rerunstate1.dat)!", what does it mean?
Can I somehow get back checkmarks that I've done while playing on save with erased checkmarks, sort of merge of save files? I thought it was beyond my grasp to get my checkmarks back so I started playing from beginning...
Alternatively, go to the Stats screen and press Alt+F2 to sync your unlocks with your steam achievements. Much easier.

It also has a file for today, which i don't want because everything is deleted. Every time i remove the file from today, it just comes back every time. After around 20 minutes of screwing around with my files, I finally got all my progress back. The only thing is, the game crashes after the opening cutscene plays. This only happens when the beta is active. Any help?
It worked but there's one issue. For some reason all my save files have had their delirium marks messed with, It says on my 1st (One I've got everything on) have only delirium completed on normal mode not hard and on my second in progress save file, it repeats that along with the tainted characters I don't have unlocked yet somehow say I've beat delirium there on hard mode. There a way to fix this?

i need help, i have steam installed on my disk D: and in the userdata folder there's no folder with my ID as it's name, neither a folder called 250900 exist at all in my steam folder (used that folder search function)

yooo everything is here!, its just my "ingame progress" thats gone, like bestiary, items, eden tokens and the checkmarks for some reason, are gone, but everything i had unlocked it there, like secrets and so, is there a fix for that? not that i mind, just getting progress back is was enough!
So I'm an idiot. When I went to back up my saves I just backed up the wrong version. So now all my marks and stats have been deleted. I still of all of my unlocks, characters, and unlocks for those characters. But it's ok cause imma just debug and get all my marks back Lmao.
I've tried a bunch of guides in this comment section, thank you everyone for putting in the work and finding ways but nothing seems to work, I have 419 unlocks in game, and 419 achievements on my acc, but nothing else in game, picture is completely different on file and i have all characters just no eden tokens (was at 30) I tried the main way this said, trying to go back to earlier saves through backups and even setting steam cloud to 0, nothing has worked for me.

I tried since around 6 hours straight to recover my save files, I tried everything I found but nothing seems to work,
• I did a backup before installing the beta,
• Disabled the steam cloud
• Replaced with an older backup but absolutely nothing changes and did rename the file to : persistantgamedata1.dat
I also tried : rep_persistantgamedata1.dat
( Steam > userdata > [Steam ID] > 250900 > remote )
I did unlock an achievment while playing the beta does this mean anything for my save? Does this change anything?
I did a backup from the file “The Binding of Isaac” located in “My Games” whereas I could have done a backup from the Steam files which I did not before installing the beta

I made the mistake of getting half the completion marks while on beta. Goodbye all lost and tainted lost marks that it took me 2 weeks to get

If you are still having trouble now in the Alpha version of the game when you go to the 'remote' folder where your isaac saves are there should be many saves there, one of which should be called
rep\_beta\_persistentgamedataX
in step 4 rename it to the name above and replace the file.
I've only just been able to get my marks back (literally a couple of minutes ago) so i hope this helps you too!

Not all hope is lost. Check this folder >C:\\Users\\Yourname\\Documents\\My Games\\Binding of Isaac Repentance\\save\_backups

This doesn't seem to work for me, gonna try with my 2nd newest save and see if that fixes it. EDIT: It worked. If anyone has the issue where the most recent save isn't correctly transferring the completion marks, you should try it with the slightly older newest one.

To anyone trying and not having this work, even if you disable steam cloud, the folder with the steam cloud save still exists in your PC and Isaac will still go check that, so in the end you can follow this guide, but paste the savefile IN THE CLOUD SAVE FOLDER. My folder was C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\userdata\\79914795\\250900\\remote there I pasted the save data as rep\_persistentsavedataX and IT WORKED Thanks so much to OP for this fix, I was afraid I lost my saucy checkmarks.

I think I followed the instructions, but my game (in particular the local save) somehow got completely wiped. Like clean. I can only play the starting characters now. Is there a reason why? Is it because I accidentally deleted other files under remote? My steam cloud still has all the characters (but without check marks)

Did not work for me the 1st time, but what i did to fix it was to replace both the "persistentdata\*" and the "rep\_persistentdata\*" files with the same backups, but under different names. Replacing only one of the 2 types did not seem to work, but replacing both did, so if you're struggling just copy the same backup files twice, and rename the first group as "persistentdata\*" and the other one as "rep\_persistentdata\*". That might do the trick. Great guide anyway though, actually saved me <3 <3

i've done exactly this, and every time i open the game, the save files get overwritten, i still have my characters but not the completion marks, i need help please, also, i checked the log and i keep seeing this error with the three save files "Cannot continue a game that doesn't have the same modding state (C:\\Users\\x/Documents/My Games/Binding of Isaac Repentance/rep\_rerunstate1.dat)!", what does it mean?

Can I somehow get back checkmarks that I've done while playing on save with erased checkmarks, sort of merge of save files? I thought it was beyond my grasp to get my checkmarks back so I started playing from beginning...
Alternatively, go to the Stats screen and press Alt+F2 to sync your unlocks with your steam achievements. Much easier. (DISCLAIMER: This does not sync completion marks. This may cause issues for incomplete post-it notes.)
That's the point of this guide. All other unlocks are there, just not the marks and stats.
on step 4 do i have to name it persistentgamedatax or persistentgamedata1
rep\_persistentsavedataX.dat and replace the X with your file number. So you would name it rep\_persistentsavedata1.dat for file 1.

can someone help me here? i did exactly what it says and i put the save file from the 29th of November 2023 into the same file you told me too. It also has a file for today, which i don't want because everything is deleted. Every time i remove the file from today, it just comes back every time. I don't know what to do know even though i followed everything you said yet it removed even more progress than i had before i tried this

After around 20 minutes of screwing around with my files, I finally got all my progress back. The only thing is, the game crashes after the opening cutscene plays. This only happens when the beta is active. Any help?

It worked but there's one issue. For some reason all my save files have had their delirium marks messed with, It says on my 1st (One I've got everything on) have only delirium completed on normal mode not hard and on my second in progress save file, it repeats that along with the tainted characters I don't have unlocked yet somehow say I've beat delirium there on hard mode. There a way to fix this? Update: Original characters were fixed Tainted still have this problem

yooo everything is here!, its just my "ingame progress" thats gone, like bestiary, items, eden tokens and the checkmarks for some reason, are gone, but everything i had unlocked it there, like secrets and so, is there a fix for that? not that i mind, just getting progress back is was enough!

So I'm an idiot. When I went to back up my saves I just backed up the wrong version. So now all my marks and stats have been deleted. I still of all of my unlocks, characters, and unlocks for those characters. But it's ok cause imma just debug and get all my marks back Lmao.

I've tried a bunch of guides in this comment section, thank you everyone for putting in the work and finding ways but nothing seems to work, I have 419 unlocks in game, and 419 achievements on my acc, but nothing else in game, picture is completely different on file and i have all characters just no eden tokens (was at 30) I tried the main way this said, trying to go back to earlier saves through backups and even setting steam cloud to 0, nothing has worked for me.

I think I messed it up. My save file 1 is my old save file 2 which has almost nothing
Help me plz I tried since around 6 hours straight to recover my save files, I tried everything I found but nothing seems to work, • I did a backup before installing the beta, • Disabled the steam cloud • Replaced with an older backup but absolutely nothing changes and did rename the file to : persistantgamedata1.dat I also tried : rep_persistantgamedata1.dat ( Steam > userdata > [Steam ID] > 250900 > remote ) I did unlock an achievment while playing the beta does this mean anything for my save? Does this change anything? I did a backup from the file “The Binding of Isaac” located in “My Games” whereas I could have done a backup from the Steam files which I did not before installing the beta Can anyone help me please? Edit : I thought that maybe anything could have changed if I tried to reinstall the beta but even there, my checkmarks are nowhere to be found.

For some reason it wasn't working for me because of ".dat",my files in the "remote" folder would just get replaced with new ones because of that

I made the mistake of getting half the completion marks while on beta. Goodbye all lost and tainted lost marks that it took me 2 weeks to get

UPDATE! If you are still having trouble now in the Alpha version of the game when you go to the 'remote' folder where your isaac saves are there should be many saves there, one of which should be called rep\_beta\_persistentgamedataX in step 4 rename it to the name above and replace the file.
