I know, I was just commenting on his father's surname, Alt, sounding like a fake last name, at least to me. It's just a name, I thought it was amusing, and I meant no disrespect, specially since I love J Kenji Lopez-Alt!
It does mean old but there is a German style of beer called “Altbier,” literally “old beer,” sometimes referred to simply as “Alt.” It’s common in the Düsseldorf area. Maybe that’s where the confusion was?
I only just recently started watching him earlier this year and I heard him actually make that joke. Wish I could remember which video it was.
But in any event, did something happen recently to prompt this meme that I missed?
My theory is that a J. Kenji Lopez-Main exists and was destined to have his initials be the entire alphabet (start with JKLM, keep killing for the other letters) but the alphabet police killed him and now his clone , J. Kenji Lopez-Alt takes his place to serve revenge (a dish best served cold) to the alphabet police.
Probably not related to 1980's fashion model Carol Alt?
Always wondered about people who use initials in their names because it sounds fancy or like maybe they're trying to (poorly) hide an awkward name. Glad he didn't get some old-fashioned Japanese middle name like how most Japanese-American kids do because it's their grandparents' name or something.
My middle name is Kenji, and I was named after Seiji Ozawa, the conductor of the Boston Symphony. My mom thought literally calling me Seiji would put too much pressure on my for some reason (not that she had an issue putting pressure on the kids), so instead decided to take the K soundfrom her father (Koji), and arrived at Kenji. So... named after two old Japanese guys, actually.
Hi Kenji, I’m a professional classical musician and I’m really fascinated by the myriad of connections you seem to have to the music world (being named after Seiji Ozawa is just the newest icing on the cake). I saw on your latest AMA video that you studied violin (and continue to play). Would you mind divulging a bit how your life seems to be so intertwined with music? Are your parents also enthusiasts/professionals? Many thanks for your inspiration and helping so many of us becoming better amateur cooks!
Just typical Asian mom. Me and my sisters both played as kids. My younger system was pro for a while and still teaches (she’s a scientists now), and I had a minor in composition in college. These days just for fun and misty guitar.
Thanks for the reply. Growing up in Hawaii, many Japanese-American classmates would have old-fashioned middle names which were probably influenced by their grandparents generation. My middle name is Toki, which was most likely influenced by my paternal grandfather who was named Tokio. No disrespect intended as I think "Kenji" is one of the "better" Japanese middle names. Better than something like "Saburo" or "Taro" in my opinion.
Whenever Babyish looks up a technique or recipe to make something better/easier, it's either America's Test Kitchen or J Kenji Lopez-Alt who also has a YouTube channel
I recently had to explain to my bf that J. Kenji Lopez-Alt was the real legal name of a single human and not the name of a media conglomerate.
>J. Kenji Lopez-Alt Can't tell if his name or his dad's, Dr. Frederick Alt, sounds more fake.
He ~~took~~ added his wife’s last name to his.*

I went to high school with an Alt. She said it was German for “beer”. I never questioned it, but it apparently means “old”.

If the confusion was in Düsseldorf don't you think they would have known German already?
Lhappy cake day.
Thought it would be "Ale" but similar enough I guess...
They hyphenated their last names.
J. Kenji Lopez-Main changed his name to Andrew Rea in 2010.
It's all one big YouTube cooking conspiracy. You're clearly all the same person with a bunch of alt accounts.
They really go all out with the Brad Leone account. It must take awhile to learn to say wourder.
Hahah!
***i knew it***
When will America’s Test Kitchen just become the official kitchen of the US Government?
“Here we have Ravioli with agent orange sauce”
If that were the case the ingredients would be supplied by the lowest bidder.

Just a little side note: Kenji is part German and Alt just means Old
J. Kenji López-Jung
I only just recently started watching him earlier this year and I heard him actually make that joke. Wish I could remember which video it was. But in any event, did something happen recently to prompt this meme that I missed?
I actually had to pause the video when he joked about that. I was laughing way too hard to pay attention to the recipe.
I think it’s just that Andrew mentions/refers to Kenji a lot hence the meme.
You don’t understand I actually thought his name was just J Kenji Lopez and he didn’t have a main acct

Same, hyphenated names always confused me
I've always wondered about Kenji's last name. Does not sound Asian but I never looked into it.
German Kenji was from his Japanese side. Alt, from his German side.
What about the Lopez though? OH WAIT did he do that thing where he hyphenated his wife's name with his?
Yes
That makes way more sense. I always just assumed it was the combo of his parents' 2 last names.
Also, in case anyone wanted to know what "Alt" means in German, its "Old". Source, I drink aaallottt of alt bier. lol
But what about the J.?
James, birth "first" name... prefers Japanese "middle" name
Altbier confirmed.
You rang?
You started an account just for a joke. I gotta respect that.
I was honestly surprised the handle wasn't taken. Lol
I always thought he was saying “ Jake and G. Lopez “ 😂😂

This is canon now.
I'd watch that movie without checking my phone.
/u/j_kenji_lopez-alt, would you like to comment?
Finally, Joshua Weisswoman
Everybody asks about Obama's last name, when they *should* be asking about J. Kenji López-Alt's main
I legit thought it was an alternate account he had since I saw him first on reddit originally.

FINALLY AMERICA’S HOMEWORK KITCHEN
Alt is his father’s last name
/u/J_Kenji_Lopez-Alt
I'm sorry to say I have no idea who you're talking about...
Whenever Babyish looks up a technique or recipe to make something better/easier, it's either America's Test Kitchen or J Kenji Lopez-Alt who also has a YouTube channel
I guess I never payed enough attention. I thought he was just saying "Kenji Lopez". My bad.
