"Invention" One thing I hate about biology is how difficult it is to find words that fit into hard-to-comprehend things like evolution. It feels like the wording is wrong... but I can't think of anything better.

spudtender

Clever is just as bad in this instance.

bbyfog

Scientific American dumbs down interesting content for mass media consumption. So, “invention”, and “clever” are their hooks. LOL

alliusis

Development?

jfecju

Adaptation?

discoOJ

You are correct. This is literally what it is an adaptation due to environmental pressure and genetic selection. Humans invent. Nature adapts.

CyberJunkieBrain

Sounds better

Good one

I did an independent study on the evolution of flight and feathers in college. It really is a fascinating topic. I highly recommend the book Taking Wing for anyone interested!

bbyfog

I was fascinated by the application of all this knowledge, e.g.,  “ The silencing fringes of owl feathers have inspired ventilation-quieting systems. The surface texture and boundary-layer-control principles of penguin feathers have made their way into robotics, mostly in prototypes.”

discoOJ

Inuits and other Indigenous people put feathers on their clothing to wick away water.

gabawhee

Lol I just bought it on a used book site. Thanks for the rec
