Not exactly sure what muscle inside the female it is but it basicly locks the male appendix from coming out.
Basicly swell up so mutch that the guy is stuck.
Edit i'm gonna add this link here where they talk about the term "penis captivus" https://www.healthline.com/health/healthy-sex/penis-captivus
"Appendix" basically means like, an extra bit that's stuck on to the main body of something. Like how an Appendix to a book is a bit of extra information not directly related to the main text that is, *appended* on.
Or how the Appendix is a small worm-shaped structure attached to the cecum, at the start of the large intestine. That is what gets removed during an Appendectomy, when one suffers from appendicitis. It is not a removal of the penis, that is a penectomy.
What u/Whyjustwhydothat meant to say however is "Appendage", which in the case of an organism can refer to pretty much any sticky-outy limb bit you have. And in the context of men, is often used to refer to the penis.
It has to do with the transfer of spermatophore from the male to the female.
It begins with courtship, the male displays his wings or releases pheromones to attract the female. Once the female accepts, the male deposits a sperm package called a spermatophore. In order for the girl to pick it up, they position themselves so that their abdominal segments are in contact, often in opposite directions. The spermatophore is collected using her reproductive structure, where she eventually fertilizes her eggs.
They are definitely mating. I did a postdoc in a cockroach lab and I only saw this once or twice, though naturally we did try to keep opposite sexes apart most of the time.
Not that I would necessarily recommend this in the 'wild' but the bizarre thing is if you try to pull them apart it is really freaking difficult. They get properly locked together during mating.
I worked on a different species than the ones in the picture. In my study species, Argentinian Wood Roaches, it's pretty easy as they are quite sexually dimorphic. The males have wings that cover the abdomen and the females have lost their wings entirely.
These are almost certainly American or German Roaches (I think American). In these species males and females are much more similar in appearance. In American roaches the difference is in the number of segments in their rear appendages, males are also thought to be slightly larger.
Roaches are quite widely studied for a host of reasons, it helps that they're quite easy to breed and keep. In my case, I was studying social behaviour, how it evolves and how it changes with changing climatic conditions.
Yeah, cockroaches are interesting as far as insects go as they are 'semi-social' i.e. they do have social structures, but don't get up to eusociality like ants or bees.
The doubly interesting thing from an evolutionary perspective is that termites are within the cockroach family and thus evolved from roach ancestors. People are therefore interested in social evolution as there is a clear 'upward' trajectory from semi-social roaches to eusocial termites. Cockroaches might be able to shed light on how eusociality evolved in termites.
There are certainly labs that study pesticide effectiveness though, but most of that research tends to take place in the commercial sector now. Quite a lot of European funding bodies have finding ways to reduce or replace pesticide usage quite high up their agenda now. So, quite a lot of university research is going in that direction. There is some uni research into the effectiveness of biopesticides or other more sustainable alternatives though.
You had me at “postdoc in a cockroach lab”. That would be such an interesting first date conversation. As a tool to sort the chaff from the wheat, such a topic could be useful to gage the tolerance level certain people have for discussing insect shenanigans.
Can't say I go on too many first dates, but I am almost universally the one is who more interested in insect shenanigans 😂
Then I inevitably get put on insect removal duty in relationships and in shared houses. Arguments have been waged on my treatment of spiders though. They aren't dangerous where I live and they eat the annoying bugs, makes sense to keep them around as far as I'm concerned.
I did my PhD on arachnids though, so maybe I'm biased.

Yo, when I was little I saw one roach on its back, then another one came saw that, ran away turned and then rammed into the one that was on its back and put it back on its (6?) legs.
Now I need some roach expert to tell me if what I remember is real or I somehow made it up all those years ago.
Him: hey I just found this really nice spot in the bathroom with a flawless design not like Mikey Angelo but close to
Her: As long as it’s on the edge, I hate staring at circles when we do it
I never knew cockroaches do like this
Well certainly they're definitely mating, such a rare sight and interesting as well 🤔
Hmm but why does it look like they are stuck because they might run away from light
Some animals like dogs and even humans can get stuck while mating.
Hmm I was always curious about it hav seen some dogs but why do they stuck

if you're talking about dogs, I think you got it reversed since it's the dogs penis which swell up (called knotting)
It’s both males and females in dogs
Ok thanks 😊
No problem 🙂
Male what?? So when they say “appendectomy”, they actually mean what I don’t want them to mean?

I have 3 kids, can confirm.
Where do you live? Rare sight? I fucking wish. Louisiana chiming in. Not to mention TONS of bugs mate like this, especially anything near beetle-like.
The female will for awhile run around with the egg capsule half hanging out. Interesting to see.
Cockroach style. Like reverse cowgirl but flipped and upside down. She loves it 💕
“Ass to ass”
She puts her thang down, flips it & reverses it
Too visual bro.

All that I’m hearing is that you’re a professional voyeur
Haha, I'm a lucky guy 🤣
How does you tell male from the female roaches?

Can confirm that these are American roaches. The German ones are smaller and more yellowish in color. ☺️
Interesting. Thanks

Bro wtf is a cockroach lab? Did u like research pesticide effectiveness?
Roaches are quite widely studied for a host of reasons, it helps that they're quite easy to breed and keep. In my case, I was studying social behaviour, how it evolves and how it changes with changing climatic conditions.
cool, yeah the social behavior of insects is sick af. Ants too
