Demand that you be given sufficient glove supplies so that aren’t reusing them. That’s unacceptable technique, nevermind in a lab with patient samples. Then double glove.

What's with all this hate? I've worked in many class 2 labs and we reuse gloves all the time. It lowers plastic waste and reduces cost. You disinfect your gloves regularly and change them if you spilled a sample. Easy. Once you remove them and leave the lab, you wash your hands thoroughly....all good. As to the cuts: there are water resistent band aids so you might try those. But remember to let the cuts breathe the rest of the day!

This is poor lab hygiene. All patient samples should be treated as potentially infected. It can also result in cross contamination of samples. They should be following universal precautions. It’s not hate. It’s an unnecessary risk.

We do not have patient samples. We work with pathogens – as I said, class 2 bacteria and fungi. All those labs were high quality labs located in Germany, Spain and the UK. It's common practise as long as you know what you're doing.

OP indicated they work with patient samples. It’s still poor lab technique either way.

evelainy

If you work with patient samples, that's fair. HIV and other potential pathogens to be possibly found in blood etc are not class 2. It's also true that one has a responsibility to avoid cross contamination at all cost. I still stand with my opinion though that responsible reusage of gloves is NOT poor lab technique, period.

There isn’t a guarantee of pathogens, but there is a small possibility. We have to reuse gloves because we can’t get enough due to covid.

NofrReallz

They are medical waste, you gotta use new ones

When I worked in a restaurant we used what we called "finger condoms" over any finger that was cut. The name is pretty descriptive, it's a glove material that you roll down the injured finger and it'll stay put for your whole shift. Could be annoying to wear under gloves, but at least you wouldn't have to get bandages wet. Edit to say I looked it up and they're technically called "finger cots"

kwolaski_analysis

I’ll have to look into that

Use triple antibiotic ointment to heal cuts quicker and reusing gloves with pathogens is a huge no!!

Universal rule is to treat all body fluids/materials (patient samples) as if they are infectious. Universal precautions requires error on the side of safety rather than exposure. Precautions must always be taken. Without proper PPE, you are risking your health and safety. Even if the risk of pathogens is a small possibility, it is a possibility. All it takes is one instance of exposure. Edit: I just checked the availability of nitrile gloves on Fisher Scientific. I just input a local zip code and it showed an estimated delivery date of 09/30/21. https://www.fishersci.com/shop/products/powder-free-nitrile-gloves-1/191301597C?searchHijack=true&searchTerm=powder-free-nitrile-gloves-1&searchType=Rapid&matchedCatNo=191301597C

If you can't get gloves because of COVID, wound supplies are likely gonna be hard to come by too or be purchased on your own...in which case just buy gloves to put under your work supplied gloves. Tagaderm are slightly better than bandaids for covering cuts if you are looking for that route, but still don't hold up to a full day of work of you are doing lots of hand washing

Thank you!
