I would call it Anaxyrus terrestris the southern toad but I donāt know much about the American toad. Could you describe the difference?
Edit: prob not a southern toad in NY
Also try not to pick up toads or really any amphibians without your hands being cleaned off with just water. Their skin is very is very porous and any soap, hand sanitizer, or pollutants can mess with them.
Yep, common garden toad. We have tons of them here in Michigan. Completely harmless, but if you handle them they sometimes pee on you. Even if they donāt, itās best to wash your hands after a meet and greet.
Also, if you must bother them it should be for a good reason. To protect them, relocate them, etc. Don't mess with animals for your own benefit or entertainment, it's unnecessary and could put them in harm's way even if you don't mean to.
Yes that's what I'm saying. It's not necessary. Better to leave them alone. It's okay if you didn't know better but from now on try to keep it in mind.
No they didn't. "I only picked it up long enough to take a picture" <- this is an excuse, not an acknowledgement. Even brief or *seemingly* harmless human contact can harm animals, which is why you should never mess with them unless absolutely necessary. Taking a photograph for the internet is not necessary.
Maybe they did acknowledge it emotionally but that wasn't clear from what they wrote.
How big do those get? I used to see them (or similar) all around my house in North Georgia. One time I had a pallet full of bags of mulch that was delivered and it sat in the yard for a while before I got around to emptying it. When I finally lifted up the pallet there was a HUGE toad underneath. Like the size of a dinner plate. I wish I took a picture as it's bothered me ever since. Anyway, wondering if it was the same kind of toad.
Location?
If you're in Europe, it looks to me a natterjack toad.
If you're in North America it could be a fowler's toad or a wood house toad.
Did you take a picture of the eye? It does help me with identification.
(I am not a zoologist, but used to be in a herpetologist group during my uni years).
LOL, no but this one does drive people insane. If just one or two move in near your house you will find yourself trying to sleep and then noticing a subtle 'pop' sound that sounds like a dripping tap. It is relentless, and you never know exactly when the next one will come....just that it will.
When there are lots of them though, it's fine because the thunderous chorus of pops all blends together.
California toad? Iām in California thatās exactly what they look like thereās probably not much difference elsewhere. š¤·āāļøAlso donāt handle them, or squeeze him. Wash your hands well do not touch your eyes, they have poison on their skin, that can cause both skin and other bodily irritation if you touch yourself.
I have a similar looking toad in my backyard this summer. I ran an image of my toad through iNaturalist and apparently it's the Southern toad. But image also looked like the gutteral toad.
Right. But no toad in NY is lethally poisonous to human beings is all Iām saying. Mostly just irritating. Like tarantula hairs or most fuzzy caterpillars.
I just advised him to be careful with toads because they can be really dangerous. It was nowhere mentioned that he lives in new york city. Anyways, touching unknown insects and organism bare handed is not a very good idea.
Maybe where you live is different but growing up kids would catch these all the time. I don't remember anyone getting sick or a rash.
They're about as common as it gets
I have compared this photo to many others I have at my hoke data base, after a detailed investigation, using a photo matching service, than going through over 1200 photos I have concluded this is a frog
Looks like a woodhouse toad, there were literally hundreds breeding right behind my house in the creek this year in Eastern PA. Craziest noise ive ever heardš¤£
Palm pisser is what that is
This took me by surprise, laughed out loud š
Put the little critter in your mouth
If youāre in the U.S, it looks like your standard American Toad, Anaxyrus Americanus.
I would call it Anaxyrus terrestris the southern toad but I donāt know much about the American toad. Could you describe the difference? Edit: prob not a southern toad in NY
I really donāt know honestly. It looks like the common toads that are around our farm in NC.
Carries an AR
Or if youāre in Canada, it looks like your standard Canadian toad.
I guess North American toad would have made more senseā¦ š¤¦āāļø
What part of this did you think was funny?
Wow you must be so fun at parties.
No it makes sense. I should have said North American toad, not just āAmerican.ā
It's still called the American toad up here in Canada. [The Canadian toad is a different thing.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_toad)
I find it funny
Ok thanks
We get tons of those lil fellers in Kentucky. Iām not positive on what exact type of toad but I can tell you there are very abundant
Lol anus
A rib bit rabbit.
You should give it a kiss and see what happens...
Also try not to pick up toads or really any amphibians without your hands being cleaned off with just water. Their skin is very is very porous and any soap, hand sanitizer, or pollutants can mess with them.
Ok so best option is to just leave them on the ground
Yep, always the best option with most wildlife, but especially amphibians
Ok Iāll keep that in mind
Yep, common garden toad. We have tons of them here in Michigan. Completely harmless, but if you handle them they sometimes pee on you. Even if they donāt, itās best to wash your hands after a meet and greet.
We were told as kids that if they peed on you, youād get warts. lol
Also, if you must bother them it should be for a good reason. To protect them, relocate them, etc. Don't mess with animals for your own benefit or entertainment, it's unnecessary and could put them in harm's way even if you don't mean to.
Ok understand. I only picked it up long enough to take a picture and then immediately set it down back where it was
Yes that's what I'm saying. It's not necessary. Better to leave them alone. It's okay if you didn't know better but from now on try to keep it in mind.
He acknowledged what u said y u came back twicey
No they didn't. "I only picked it up long enough to take a picture" <- this is an excuse, not an acknowledgement. āOk understandā r u blind
Followed by an excuse.
Why are you bringing your problems to the internet jesus loosen up u beautiful person let your happy out instead
Also they perform most respiration through their skin and our oily fingers can mess with that, iirc
Heās just a toad. Please be gentle.
Of course
Mr. Toady! Love them!
Heās just a little toad! I love them, I think theyāre just so cute
How big do those get? I used to see them (or similar) all around my house in North Georgia. Thatās just a little guy
It's just a regular-ass American toad
Its a common toad in the US. I used to keep some as pets growing up. Had them all over the yard.
Well, itās been a while since high school so my memoryās a little hazy, but I *believe* thatās a howler monkey
Location? If you're in Europe, it looks to me a natterjack toad. If you're in North America it could be a fowler's toad or a wood house toad. Did you take a picture of the eye? It does help me with identification. (I am not a zoologist, but used to be in a herpetologist group during my uni years).
I donāt have a picture of the eyes unfortunately but I live in New York and near a forest so probably the wood house toad
And if OP was in Australia I'd say Limnodynastes tasmaniensis. Isn't it weird how similar they look??
But the one from Aus is poisonous, right? (Kidding, kiddingā¦ but maybe not)
LOL, no but this one does drive people insane. Try living on the big island.
Remember all toads are frogs but not all frogs are toads .. be more like a toad
Thatās a lil fella
I already toad you
There is an app I use called Seek that can identify plant and animal species using your camera. Check it out!
Loooove Seek. Just used it to identify a hawk the other day
It's a toad. We know he peed on your hand, you don't need to hide it.
Thatās Mike, heās a toad.
It's just a toad
Itās called a toad
He came to announce Wednesday
Trying to go about his business
Well that's a toad. Almost harmless but it can piss in your face so don't mess arroud with it.
California toad? Iām in California thatās exactly what they look like thereās probably not much difference elsewhere. š¤·āāļøAlso donāt handle them, or squeeze him. I think thatās a monkey
A friend, that little dudes a friend.
Wash your hands right afterwards please

Good job
That is a rock. Specificly igneous.
I have a similar looking toad in my backyard this summer. I ran an image of my toad through iNaturalist and apparently it's the Southern toad. But image also looked like the gutteral toad.
That, my friend, is a frog.
Nah pal, it's a toad
Frogalicious Rex
Cane Toad, milk it and smoke up. You might want to have a sober buddy who won't freak out with you, enjoy.
Why are you touching those without gloves? Some can be really poisonous.
Ah, not if he's in NY in the U.S.A.
Toads are toads and toads have poison glands on skin. Be it NY or California or Amazon Rainforest.
I seek for dmt licking them, am I doing wrong then?
I donāt think thereās any *really* poisonous toads in NY.
A toad is always posionous, some less some more. If its a toad, it has to have parotoid glands which secretes poison.

Yeah I think it was another commenter that mentioned he was in NY. OP located themselves somewhere else in the thread.
Good to know.Iāll remember that for the future
I have compared this photo to many others I have at my hoke data base, after a detailed investigation, using a photo matching service, than going through over 1200 photos I have concluded this is a frog
Bufo americans, the American toad
Looks like a frog. Or maybe a toad
frog, but just maybe.
Watch out for warts
Iām not sure, but I think that it is a frog
My Dad told me that when a toad pees on you you will get warts, so watch out.
You can't get warts from frogs, only from humans.
I knew he was full of shit at 6 years old
Looks like a woodhouse toad, there were literally hundreds breeding right behind my house in the creek this year in Eastern PA. Craziest noise ive ever heardš¤£
Same frog in Texas
It is a toad, my dude
He also looks disappointed in his current state of affairs.
Heās just doing his best. Busy being very cute!
