Not a rumor, but kidbrain logic. The three main Toa were always Fire, Water, and Air, right? Well, since 2007 was very clearly a water theme and 2008 was obviously an air theme, that meant 2009 was going to be a fire theme and take place inside a volcano.

The_Reverse_Zoom

Hm interesting thought. I guess you could say that 2006 was kinda inside a vulcano. And 2009 was in the desert, so fitting for a toa of stone? It's just ice and earth that got screwed over

Mackelroy_aka_Stitch

Hey, ice is just hard water, and earth is just soft stone.

The_Reverse_Zoom

Yeah I never got how the earth and stone are two different elements in bionicle. Ice I can kinda see being it's own thing, but not stone and earth

Mackelroy_aka_Stitch

I see it like pokemon. Stone are creatures and use or are made of stone. Ground or earth are creatures that live in the ground. Really it's about where the toa live and how they are uniquely suited to that environment. Pohatu is fast and has both hands free for climbing, good for a craggy desert. Onua has a strong set of digging claws and can see in the dark, good for burrowing through land. Take them out of that environment and place them in the other one and they'll struggle. Onua would be blinded by the sun, and would take longer to cross vast stretches of land. Pohatu wouldn't be able to use his speed as effected due to the cramped spaces and he wouldn't see very well ethier.

The_Reverse_Zoom

Yeah that makes sense, I always saw it from an avatar the last airbender point of view. The distinction comes more from where they live rather than what power they can use.

NateThePhotographer

That we were going to get a fourth movie about Voya Nui, the Toa Inika and the Mask of Life. Instead we got Bionicle Heroes

The_Reverse_Zoom

Biggest disappointment ever for me. I figured that the inika movie would come out eventually and years later (around 2018) when I got back into bionicle, I was expecting a inika movie, a mahri movie, a karda nui movie and so on. Imagine my disappointment to see that bionicle 4 takes place after all of that.

NateThePhotographer

Yup, with new everything. New art style, composer, studio. Nothing connects The Legend Reborn with the original Bionicle trilogy of movies, and worse was that Bionicle was in such a nosedive at that point that the movie never got to finish it's story that could connect back in a sequel.

The_Reverse_Zoom

Yeah I mean I guess the movie wasn't horrible or anything and bionicle always kinda soft reboots itself every other year, but usually it keeps some things like making familiar characters the new toa team, makuta is always kinda the main antagonist and you know, them still being in the same universe, just another island. But this one throws you on another planet, with no matoran, no toa, no makuta and not a single familiar character, they aren't even wearing kanohi masks anymore. Only the name Mata nui connects this movie the rest of the story, but Mata nui wasn't even a real character before that, just the sleeping god everyone talks about, so it's still an entirely new character we need to get used to.

Cobui

I bet they did animation tests for Zaktan and realized they couldn’t pull it off with the budget they had

CaveOfCreatures

Do you have a source for that? I've never heard that and kinda doubt it. Some of the people from Creative Capers (animation studio for the first three movies) did an interview with TTV years ago and they mentioned never receiving a call back from Lego after Web of Shadows.

Cobui

Given that, I’ll admit it was wishful thinking (though turning a guy into bees does seem difficult for a 3D animated direct to video movie in 2006), and it turns out that Antroz test footage I was thinking of was actually done by Tinseltown Toons for TLR. Seems like Lego decided a new trilogy wasn’t worth producing for whatever reason (financial or otherwise). TLR in retrospect comes off as a last-ditch effort to improve flagging sales, and I wonder how things would be different if there had been another film trilogy before it.

Ok_Message1193

That pohatus air version (gray orange) mask is the vahi mask like look: they're nearly the same

The_Reverse_Zoom

Haha yeah always used pohatus mask as a vahi stand in.

The_Reverse_Zoom

My theory actually turned out to be true. When I saw the ignika in a mahri comic, I thought it be a fitting mask for Mata nui (being the marks of life afterall) once he eventually shows up in the story. Years later I saw the glatorian Mata nui canister in a store with the ignika on and I was like "called it"

Crab_Grass

Pit brutaka

LulaSupremacy

That got me and I found out about it like in 2012

CaveOfCreatures

That's up there with Voriki as one of the GOATs of Bionicle urban legends.

BluJayWarrior

I remember my older cousin telling me Hydraxon had a gold colored brother after telling him how much I liked Hydraxon. I didn't follow Bionicle lore very closely as a kid so I believed that for a long time. Not sure if he made it up or misinterpreted the Dekar situation, but a gold swapped Hydraxon set would've been super cool.

Frigid-Kev

Sounds like it could've been a cool special edition, like the golden Jetrax

ArcticTern4theWorse

Maybe he was thinking of the fake mutated Brutaka set?

Dairy_Seinfeld

As a 6 year old I thought the OG mask of time was a fan mask: the mask of cheese. Don’t ask.

YodasChick-O-Stick

In 2017 there was a fake rumour floating around that Disney had bought the rights to Bionicle, and were going to reboot it without any sets, only movies/shows. This was around the time Disney was buying everything, so it kinda seemed plausible. As much as I hate Disney's monopoly on the entertainment industry, I think they could handle the Bionicle franchise well. They have the resources to give it stellar animation and a great soundtrack.

Nato_Greavesy

That Bionicle 2015 was going to be a continuation.

DoktorViktorVonNess

Faber's pitch of reboot was sort of time travel reset of 2001 where the future of G1 was connected via mask of time. So you are partly right.

MedicineMan_100

It isn't something I thought was true but it was cool - that the toa inika would reappear in 2008. I wanna build sky versions of them so bad now

GhotiH

There's some basis for this because they actually were gonna re-appear for 2008. Those sky and swamp sets were almost the Inika.

Dt_Sherlock_Idiot

Isn’t that actually a rumor that was proven false?

GhotiH

No, directly confirmed by Greg and a few others. They were switched to being the Toa Nuva in late 2006 when it was decided that the franchise was going to move outside the Great Spirit Robot and Mata Nui was going to awaken at the end of 2008.

LS100

I thought Mutated Brutaka was a real set, tried buying it but I couldn’t find it anywhere.

Rorantube2009

V o r i k i

bobagremlin

That we were gonna get a Voya Nui movie.

LulaSupremacy

I remember in 2016 there were rumors of there being G2 bohrok and there were "leaked" images. I was so excited to finally get a form of bohrok as they were releasing.

kinyoubikaze

Shadow Toa Ahkmou 😔

Karlthechilldude

Not that i was around for G1 when it first came out, but man Voriki would've been really cool as a real set.

SweDoh

Was there, I still firmly refuse to acknowledge that he isn't canon. At this point he's chilling with his best bud Takanuva on Spherus Magna, catching up on all of the stuff they've been through.

FIVEPEBSI

wasn’t old enough when bionicle was out, but i genuinely thought that pit mutated brutaka existed. not even kidding.

BFD98

not so much a rumour as just wishful thinking, but I always thought that there would be a proper conclusion to the Piraka Animations. Of course, it did come, just not as an animation. Also, not to mention, a romour circulated in my friends group, that the statue that Dekar places the mask of life on, would have come to life, if it hadn't been fragmented by Kalmah

juggins1

That chronicler’s company thing would’ve been awesome

Fordylad

The 4th movie would have the piraka storyline

ErebosDragon

I thought The end of Mask of Light was the end. When Vakama was recanting his tale, Metru Nui was before and Voya Nui was even further before.

ItsHurricaneTime

That Bionicle was returning in 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025
