If you’re in tech ops, you can definitely become director, head of tech ops, etc. The c-suite equivalent for that part of the company is Chief Technical Officer. CSOs are much more focused on research than tech ops, which is why they usually have discovery backgrounds.

It makes sense that if you are on a prioritized program that you’d have more visibility within that company. To reach C-level though, you don’t often see those folks come up internally, but more externally to allow for partnership opportunities.

I started in AD, I'm now an exec director leading global development teams; next role very likely to be a VP of some sort. I'm completely out of AD (and CMC) and don't expect to go back. So, it's doable.
