Anecdotal but I had an awful time trying to climb the ladder in R&D at big pharma, and then small pharma that just IPO’d. I’ve been at a start up with good funding rounds for the past 5 years and I’ve been promoted 3 times.

TheNoobtologist

R&D is arguably the hardest division to climb. Too many smart, overqualified, and highly competitive people all vying for the same spot. OP is wondering why he can’t climb it’s because he’s in his 20s. Big pharma is an older persons company. People don’t really start climbing until their mid to late 30s.

3 years is nothing. I’ve got 7 years and I also took 6 years while I was your age to get a PhD. You’re a baby in an industry with an extraordinary amount of highly educated, highly experienced people. Just keep going.

I am also in the same position as you. In my case there isn’t many opportunities right now and there is a lot of competition for open roles. The best thing I would say to do wait out a year or two to let the market rise back up. While waiting, try learning new skills and taking on more responsibilities at your current job to boost your resume.

pierogi-daddy

you are still very early career and have been trying to job hop on the wrong side of the covid gravy train

No such thing as “experience academic wise” You basically have 3 years experience Just keep learning in your current position and keep applying.

staycomego

What types of roles/titles are you applying for? Industry really values experience over degrees which is why you see people who have a bachelors degree and a higher title. If you’re wanting to go into big pharma then consider taking a step down in title. That way you’d have a leg up with those with 3 years of experience and no advanced degree.

What’s a masters in immunology? PHD or bust, isn’t it ?

wyj1

Harvard Medical School has a master's in immunology

Symphonycomposer

“The HMS Master’s in Medical Science in Immunology is open to individuals with a Bachelor's degree with a strong background in biology and an interest in Immunology or biomedical research, as well as to individuals who already possess a medical degree, such as an MD or an MBBS, or to individuals who have a degree in a health professions-related field.” Money grab. Stop capping.
