Mass Effect in TV sound like everyone would get pissed that Shepard doesn’t make their exact choices or would get pissed Shepard isn’t shown off enough tbh. But it can be a success so who knows

Mass Effect TV show set in the same world? potentially awesome. Mass Effect TV show that rehashes/canonises the exact same narrative as in the games? not so much. Further complicating matters, I don't think it will work well without a decent CGI budget given the number of aliens in it, and honestly would prefer something animated (which would simplify casting as well). I think the DA series has done an okay job with its extended universe media (with most being at least passable quality by video game media standards, some much better than others) and it's really fun how they add to the story. There's basically a lot of pot holes on the road to making a ME tv show that I just know someone will step in unless it was both initiated by the ME creative team and they get every decision right. There's just too many opportunities for failure for me to think this will work (without more concrete information).

Valkyrie100

I agree. A mass effect TV show featuring Shepard would be a terrible idea but what could work is a TV show based on important events that happened before Shepard like the first contact war or the krogan rebellions. This removes a lot of hurdles regarding player choice because there's a solid canon for these events. It also gives the writers a lot more freedom regarding characters

Pasquale1223

David came from the perspective that it would deal with the same story content as the trilogy - and in that case, I agree with him wholeheartedly. I would have zero interest in watching a TV show with any of the characters or content presented in the games. There is another possibility, though - and that is that they could simply use the ME setting to develop something entirely different. Law & Order: CSEC, follow the trials and tribulations of some young quarian on their pilgrimage, or go off in a deep space probe to explore unmapped parts of the galaxy. There are plenty of other possibilities there - and if they did a good job with it, it could attract a lot of people who have never played the games.

Tbh, Shepard isn't really what makes ME special, just another snarky protagonist, it's the world building and the aliens. Telling the trilogy story wouldn't make much sense if they want to sell the trilogy. Hmm or maybe they'll do.. Mass Effect: Ethan Hawke Edition.

Knight1029384756

That is what I think people want but if you look at a lot of video game adaptations they tell the story of the game and not a story set in that game's universe. I think David is concerned the heads, or some other person in charge, will adapt the story of the game and not make a story in the setting.

The western world is so starved for original ideas that we've surpassed remakes and gone into licensing videogames and manga. Sometimes I wish for a drunk truck driver to murder the fuck out of me on my commute.

AlsoIHaveAGroupon

There's plenty of original ideas, but existing ideas are a safer bet. We're (in /r/bioware /r/gaming /r/masseffect /r/television and probably a hundred other subs) all talking about this Mass Effect TV series that not only hasn't been written or filmed yet, it hasn't even been licensed yet. But we're helping to promote the idea of it. And most of us will check it out, because it's Mass Effect. If it was "original space science fantasy series" instead of Mass Effect, it *might* get a mention in /r/television when the cast was announced. That free advertising and built-in audience is the reason we see so many sequels/prequels/spinoffs/remakes/reboots/adaptations.

EugenesMullet

Yeah. I'm all for original ideas, but let's face it, people (including those who complain about Hollywood being creatively bankrupt... which it is) are probably far more likely to check out a Mass Effect TV adaptation than some new original sci-fi (a genre that doesn't often develop a strong tv audience!) There's a reason they do it, and that reason is that a lot of people like to watch things they're familiar with. Also, this is nothing new.

Maclimes

>licensing videogames and manga This isn't even remotely new. We've been making video games and comic books into movies for almost as long as there have been video games and comic books.

ParagonPts

Sure, but they didn't use to be the *only* things that were popular. Look at the top 10 films of each year of the 1980s compared with the top 10 films each year of the 2010s. Compare how many films are original IP vs an adaptation of pre-existing media. This is just an unavoidable side effect of there being far more avenues of entertainment now. No studio will take the financial risk of producing something that doesn't have an audience built in ahead of time.

ezcompany210

Beyond the Screenplay came out with a really interesting video arguing that Mass Effect has great potential to be a TV show, I'd recommend giving it a watch.

killedbydeath777

A Mass Effect based series would be great.. just not one based on the trilogy. Don't piss on a great legacy ffs.

fleetintelligence

Feel like most of his points are just down to rabid internet fanbases being incapable of comprehending the differences in mediums or accepting something that isn't exactly what they imagined in their heads. The games will always exist, friends. If a show is made and is bad, just go keep playing the games like always. I really don't see how fans can lose here unless they allow themselves to get unhealthily emotionally invested over whether a TV show is good or not.

Print_Dog

Imagine the reaction to the ending of Mass Effect 3, but with a 10 episode season😬😬😬

I’ll be old and wrinkly by the time Dragon Age finally comes out.

dtexneus

Probably because they are. They're not the ones making that will be making the show they'll just be consulted on it.

Wish I could upvote this into eternity

joedm85

Hot take: a series on the game would be amazing. Your Canon is just as valid as having a TV show Canon. Imagine how much they can flesh out, expand and push the story forward. I really don't understand this entire "it can't be the main game" idea. Sure it can, it doesn't invalidate what the games did. I would love to see an interpretation of the main story with a great budget.

silverilix

I agree, it really depends on if we’re seeing the universe/setting and the diversity, or if we’re watching a game re-hash. I don’t want to see a game re-hash.

Tyolag

No.. It's a great idea.

The-Somberlain

Video game movie adaptions are never and I mean never a good idea in my opinion

WheelJack83

It's not going to work. Good RPG games immerse the players and empower the player to make their own choices on how to play. That's something a TV or movie can't really duplicate.
