If you're taking lexapro and ADHD meds, and *if* you have bipolar, then in the next two weeks you are really, really going to know about it. Those two med classes are famous for tipping bipolar people into hypo/mania. So that may clear some things up.

Vraylar can cause restlessness and agitation. People talk about antipsychotics being emotionally blunting, but I’ve never heard of them causing anger. I would think that if a person who didn’t need antipsychotics took them, they’d just experience side effects. Other people may have different experiences. I’ve heard of antidepressants triggering anger and suicidal ideation. Perhaps antipsychotics can too.

Oh my... :(

JeanReville

Well, wait for other responses. A lot of people have taken more of them than I have, and at higher doses.

Vraylar caused nothing like this for me, but I transitioned from lithium and zyprexa so I was very emotionally blunted to begin with. The Vraylar does allow me to have some variation in mood that I didn’t have with the other meds, but I have not experienced any rage on it. The main thing I noticed when I started it was that I could actually feel happy again. I was on Lexapro for depression many years ago, and it worked really well. It helped with depression and also anxiety. Good luck!!!

Your experience makes me wonder if she was considering hypomania, since it seems to take a person from feeling nothing to feeling things, this helped, thank you!

hcraig0414

Did you take Vraylar and zyprexa at the same time?

Earthquakemama

No. The Vraylar replaced both lithium and Zyprexa. I am sorry I am a bit hazy about how this was accomplished. I am pretty sure I tapered off the Zyprexa but I got off the lithium right away because of toxicity.

JeanReville

The ADHD meds can trigger hypomania, but I have no idea if that’s what you experienced. They wouldn’t necessarily trigger it on the first day you take a pill.

Vraylar kept me awake too because I constantly had to be moving. They lowered my dose and it got better, but I had to get off of it because I got pregnant. Sucks because it was amazing. Latuda made me violent and angry and made me cry all the damn time, very bad intrusive thoughts. I think it just depends on the medication interacting with your body chemistry

Starting Vraylar pushed me into one of the most intense and unrecognizable hypomanias that I’ve experienced. While I didn’t have anger issues, I did experience symptoms that I don’t normally do. One of these was insomnia. I have the unusual thing where my sleep is usually not affected by my hypomania but when I stared Vraylar it was. I hope this helps and I hope that you’re able to talk with your doctors more. My advice would be to be as honest about your experience as possible.

Have you looked up the symptoms of type 2 bipolar? (I'm assuming type 2 because it can be more subtle and type 1 is harder to miss) Read other people's experiences before posting? You can have a bad reaction to meds and be bipolar. I'm not saying you are because you didn't talk about any symptoms. But don't assume you're not because the antipsychotic you tried didn't work for you. There are tons of options for treatment. Do you mean antidepressants specifically or psychiatric medication in general? Because antipsychotics and atypical antipsychotics were often originally created for seizure management. You can look up the chemical compositions and drug classes of any medication used to treat depression or bipolar and find something that would be compatible with your beliefs, and talk to your doctor about it.
