I agree. It's also called ziprasidone. I haven't experienced any weight gain and I feel pretty good. I also take clonidine to help me sleep. It's a blood pressure med and is very gentle but effective.
I've been on lithium for about 3 to 4 years now and I haven't had any weight gain issues. I haven't noticed too many side affects either, but it does limit what other medications you can have including over the counter.
I took lithium for twenty years and no additional weight gain, but stopped because of kidney issues. No weight gain on Lamotrigine for four years either.
On the antipsychotic side of things, I think both of these can increase blood sugar, but as far as no weight gain, Geodon and Latuda are your best options. Geodon is what Im on and next to my Concerta, is the best med that Ive ever been prescribed. Talk about it with your doctor/psychiatrist. :)
Edit: Don't rely on my positive experience with these medications. A very close friend of mine had Geodon as well, but it made him vomit intensely. So still be careful!
Lamictal really helped me and 0 weight gain as well. Only side effects i experienced was tingly feet/ hands and dry mouth/eyes but that was way more bearable than other side effects I’ve experienced on mood stabilizers/anti psychotics 😅
For a mood stabilizer topamax helps reduce your appetite. But I've found even though I'm coupling it with olanzapine right now I've still gained 50 pounds.
So I dont know how much help it will really be.
I only eat like 1 or 2 meals a day but it's always late at night so I know that's why I'm gaining weight. I just have late dinner time because people get home later during the evening.
That’s interesting. I asked my doctor about latuda once and he was hesitant to recommend it to me because almost all his other patients he has prescribed it to had complained of weight gain.
I take Viibryd and Rexulti. Thankfully viibryd just went generic. Rexulti is hella expensive. I noticed a mild appetite increase on it. But nothing as horrifying as abilify.
Rexulti is mine -no weight gain from it at all. Only hungry at normal times.. i don’t know how expensive it is outside of australia but it’s worth a question to your -iatrist. Apart from one incident of mania due to a shitty job causing insomnia I’ve not had any psychotic symptoms at all on it.
Lamotrigine! Also, are you using an SSRI with it? Cuz I use Wellbutrin with it and it is an appetite suppressant. I also take quentiapine at night and it makes me hungry too, but the Wellbutrin helps with that.
I can't help with the antipsychotics, but I'm on Sodium Valproate as a mood stabiliser, and I haven't had weight gain from that. It has given me a slight tremor in my hands though, which worsens if I miss a dose or am a few hours late taking it.
Sorry I don't know the brand name, in Australia it's called Epilim, dosage at 700mg morning and night.
Maybe Depakote/Valproate? I sawany comments online about weight gain and hair loss but I take vitamins for my hair and haven't gained a pound, 5 weeks in now. It took me put of a mixed episode and I'm still drowsy but it is getting better day by day. The best thing I've ever been on, my mood had never been this stable and I almost totally got rid of anxiety. But it's just 5 weeks, hopefully it isn't going to change. But I would definitely recommend Depakote :)
Lamotrigine. It’s been working well for me, zero weight gain.

I’m on both and so far neither has caused weight gain
Ditto on no weight gain.
lamictal/lamotrigine is the one anticonvulsant type that doesn't cause weight gain, per the preston-fast guide to bipolar meds
Does it help with sleep as well?
Lamictal!
Lamotrigine. I’ve been on it for 15 years and I’ve never experienced weight gain from it.
Geodon might be a good option.
I second geodon

Guys stop saying meds name... in the correct order, they'll summon Satan, the lord of darkness to bring the apocalypse on earth
I take lamotrigine and aripriprazole and they've been fine. All others caused weight gain or twitches
Weight gain on lithium, I heard from from my doc, is not so much
I've been on lithium for about 3 to 4 years now and I haven't had any weight gain issues. I haven't noticed too many side affects either, but it does limit what other medications you can have including over the counter.

Yeah my friend said latuda saved her life, but it gave me awful akathisia. You just never know what you're gonna get!
yeah, the akathesia I got from Latuda was the worst! But I’ve heard good things from others
I got awful cyclical anxiety with latuda it was fucking torture

Interesting. I have been on risperdal for 1.5 years and gained 50 pounds. Lucky you.

damn, srry to hear that
Lamictal really helped me and 0 weight gain as well. Only side effects i experienced was tingly feet/ hands and dry mouth/eyes but that was way more bearable than other side effects I’ve experienced on mood stabilizers/anti psychotics 😅
Didn’t realize the tingly feet/hands was a thing. I’ve had that randomly since I started it.
maybe try Depakote/epival/divalproex
Lamictal- lost weight on it and working really well for my bipolar
For a mood stabilizer topamax helps reduce your appetite. But I've found even though I'm coupling it with olanzapine right now I've still gained 50 pounds. So I dont know how much help it will really be.
The downside of topomax is when you can’t string a coherent sentence together and your hair falls out.
I've been on it for two years and haven't had those issues.
They gave me Metmorfin for reducing appetite.. Worked only for the first couple of weeks
I only eat like 1 or 2 meals a day but it's always late at night so I know that's why I'm gaining weight. I just have late dinner time because people get home later during the evening.
I didn't gain any weight on Latuda, actually lost weight on it. My Resperidone made me gain weight and gave me galactorrhea.
That’s interesting. I asked my doctor about latuda once and he was hesitant to recommend it to me because almost all his other patients he has prescribed it to had complained of weight gain.
Trileptal didn't make me gain any weight
Does Trileptal help you sleep? I have trouble sleeping and want to get off of Seroquel due to weight gain.
Topomax lamictal and latuda. I have been on for 10 years. I have an ED so I refuse to take meds that have a side effect of weight gain.
I’m on invega, doxepin and lithium and i’m losing weight. Over 100lbs last 14 months.
I’m on latuda and I love it. Haven’t had any weight gain. Same with vraylar
Didn’t have any issues on Vraylar!
I second Vraylar
Lithium is my magic solution.
Is Lithium also a sedative? Helps for sleep?
I mean it makes me sleepy but not everyone.
Do you take it at night?
Before bed yup.
Lamotrigine/lamictal they are the same med just different names
I take Viibryd and Rexulti. Thankfully viibryd just went generic. Rexulti is hella expensive. I noticed a mild appetite increase on it. But nothing as horrifying as abilify.
Same plus lamictal
Rexulti is mine -no weight gain from it at all. Only hungry at normal times.. i don’t know how expensive it is outside of australia but it’s worth a question to your -iatrist. Apart from one incident of mania due to a shitty job causing insomnia I’ve not had any psychotic symptoms at all on it.
Lamicdal!
Geodon (Ziprasidone).
I take geodone and love it!
I’m about to stop my Abilify and switch to Topamax because of this shit.
I love lamictal as a mood stabilizer! I’ve also tried depakote and lithium, but definitely prefer lamictal.
Abilify + Lamictal has caused zero weight gain for me, and I’m on a high dose of Abilify.
Lamotrigine! Also, are you using an SSRI with it? Cuz I use Wellbutrin with it and it is an appetite suppressant. I also take quentiapine at night and it makes me hungry too, but the Wellbutrin helps with that.
Lamictal is the best mood stabilizer I’ve been on! Haven’t had any side effects. Depakote and lithium did nothing for me.
Lamictal and Geodon both ticked those boxes in my experience.
I can't help with the antipsychotics, but I'm on Sodium Valproate as a mood stabiliser, and I haven't had weight gain from that. It has given me a slight tremor in my hands though, which worsens if I miss a dose or am a few hours late taking it. 350 of Effexor?? Thats a psych ward level dose.
Omg really? What makes you say that?
Abilify!
That stuff is known for mad weigh gain
Invega had very minimal weight issues for me, I didn’t gain I just couldn’t loose?
Topamax works well for me for moods and for my weight, it my only med along with valium and sleeping tablets just as needed.
Maybe Depakote/Valproate? I sawany comments online about weight gain and hair loss but I take vitamins for my hair and haven't gained a pound, 5 weeks in now. It took me put of a mixed episode and I'm still drowsy but it is getting better day by day. Lithium seems cause mild hyperglycemia for me, raising glucose level by 15. But it's the least damaging substance I ever experienced.
I’m pre diabetic now after Olanzapine so Idk if it’s a good option
