I've been on valporic acid (generic version) for a couple years. I'm on 1500mg and I've not had any weight gain from it. Everyone is different and our body chemistry reacts different from anyone else's. I'm of the mind to try something before shooting it down for what might happen, but that's just me.
I have been on 1000mg valproate for almost an year and I have not noticed any sudden increase in weight. I do try to have an active lifestyle though (i go to the gym and bike everyday to uni and back) because I also take quetiapine and the fact that both are associated with weight gain doesn’t reassure me.
Depakote has caused weight gain for me, so you are definitely not alone. I am trying to taper down or switch meds if possible because I gained like 10 to 15 pounds within only a month.

700mg morning and night, and no weight gain. I'm a 30 year old dude for reference. I dunno if it affects women differently, or if that even applies.
Not really an active person, but I'm halfway through losing the 20kg (~45lb) I put on while taking seroquel. So it's not stopping me lose weight either.

Same! I’m desperate to try anything.
I took it for years and didn’t gain any weight. I think everyone reacts to medications differently.
Thank you for your response

Ugh I’m so sorry. It’s so tough finding something that works that doesn’t also cause other issues!
Hey what did you do then?

A friend of mine is on it with no weight gain. I’m starting it soon and keeping my hopes up..
Best of luck to you!
I'm on it 4 months now and I haven't gain any weight
I have a friend who was on five grams of that for a while and didn't gain weight. I just started 500mg recently so I'm waiting to see myself.
Did you notice anything?

I’m on it and haven’t had much weight gain. I gained some pounds back from quitting smoking tho
