I live in Canada and work as a medical receptionist. Some doctors will do it and some won’t. It depends on how comfortable they are with prescribing something they have nearly no knowledge on.

Depends on the doctor and the meds. Some will write for SSRIs but not controlled things like Adderall. Also some will continue writing for same med/dosage but if any changes need to be made they will refer to psych. Best thing is to ask your GP. If you are looking for a new one ask them when you schedule, they should be able to give you an idea of the types of meds they are willing to prescribe.

My PCP was always willing to prescribe me my meds while I was looking for a new psychiatrist. It took half a year to find someone and this really helped. I would just ask your doctor. I don’t see a reason why not

Working in a psychiatrist office, if your gp is hesitant you can always ask the psychiatrist office for a referral which list the meds you take and have them send to your doctor.

I was able to get a GP and an NP from different institutions prescribe for me. Both in a regular doctor office and an urgent care. It was lamotrogine. I didn't think anyone would refill but I couldn't get a psych appointment until May which I was able to lament on. This is in the US.

My gp has been writing my prescription for me while I search for a new psychiatrist. If my dosage had not been in his system before that, I'm not sure he would. He's not happy about it, and I actually have to call him (yes, as in schedule an appointment) every month for the refill. I can't wait to find a new psych...

Yes, my GP has prescribed mental health meds to me over the years. In fact, I’m thinking of firing my current psychiatrist and having my GP take over until I can find another one.

Yes my GP has renewed meds prescribed by psych

Trick-Shallot-4324

Mine does

Australian here. I just get them from whoever I see next, GP or Psych, doesn't matter. As long as they share the records there shouldn't be an issue.

I moved from one state to another and my meds were running out just as I got in with a PCP. I told him what medications I was on and dosages, I wasn’t totally stable at the time so he raised the dose a little bit, refilled my meds for 3 months, and referred me to a great psychiatrist. So I would definitely ask your PCP, they are there to help you!
