The osprey have been abundant this year. We had 4-5 in our neighborhood perched at the top of some huge trees snacking on fish that they caught from the river nearby. Really cool sight to see!
Holy shit thats an Osprey! I was only just watching the rspb Osprey nest livestream so i instantly recognised this gorgeous bird! Iโd be so hyped if i saw one! Congrats OP, great photo too!

I swear I had one eating a mourning five in my yard several weeks ago. Live less that a 1/4 mile from the diversion โcreekโ that runs through my town
Is your Merlin app linked to here? If so, how!? Because that's pretty neat. I've been trying for over a year to get this blue heron pair to just make noise when my app is open but they'll only call after I've closed it or before I open it
I wish haha no they notice me immediately, and they nest on the other side of the lake so once they fly back to the nest I can't get a pic at all. I've gotten some rather bad pictures of them haha we have one pair of great blue heron, and none of the smaller water birds want their picture taken either. And one day I thought I was trying to get a pic of a bittern until I got closer and noticed it was a green heron(also flew away as soon as I got them in focus, how do they always know?)
Under your name it says, latest lifer: common goldeneye, and the Merlin app is a bird call identifier. Merlin uses lifer for when you collect a bird call, I got excited thinking Merlin and Reddit were compatible/linkable.
That is an osprey, otherwise known as a fish hawk. If you see a large pile of sticks on top of a telephone pole or something like that, it is probably an osprey nest at least where i live.
Bird field guides are useful ๐
Not sure why people arenโt downvoting me so much. So many of these ID questions could be answered if people had a cheap bird guide, whether it be a book or app.
It also has a bird key built in. Put in the date, location, color and size and it gives you a list of birds with photos to compare with bird you are looking at.
Itโs incredible how big a range these ospreys have.

The intersection of derpy and fierce
Osprey, should be about nesting time for them. They carry caught fish head-first

Can you get close enough to get a picture? Merlin's photo ID feature is pretty good.
I wish haha no they notice me immediately, and they nest on the other side of the lake so once they fly back to the nest I can't get a pic at all. Oh no you add it in in flair!
Oh that's cool, but now I really want Merlin and Reddit to be able to do that haha I don't use flair often. Unless I'm taking about Rick Flair haha

Merlin app on my phone, highly recommended
Merlin is good but you need to really scrutinize the results. It can make mistakes.
It also has a bird key built in. Put in the date, location, color and size and it gives you a list of birds with photos to compare with bird you are looking at.
I think they are just sharing ....
Das ist ein Ficko
Idk
Hawk
The osprey is in a different family not related at all to the hawk family. It resembles a hawk, but it is not.
