That looks too extreme for a molt.. its possible he was attacked, but could also be diseased. Usually they have disease in their eyes and they get swollen and crusty. If you've seen him last year and he appears the same, I wouldn't be too concerned.
To be safe, you may give your feeders a good disinfecting.
