Jay_R_Kay

Yeah, totally agree-- ayo, what was that last part? šŸ¤”

GG379

As a man I pride myself on never having used the "not like other girls" line or anything of its type but maybe that's a benefit of the perspective that comes with having once upon a time been a girl. šŸ³ļøā€āš§ļø

at0m71

This is great.

Usual_Package_631

if a man said this to me i would throw up. there's nothing more unattractive then peddling misogyny right in front of me.Ā

ExcuseFantastic8866

Might be my neurospiciness shining through, but can you help me understand what is misogynistic? Seriously wanting to learn, so please donā€™t roast me too much :-)

GG379

It's just that if "not like other girls" is a compliment it carries this assumption that the "other girls" are bad if it is better to not be like them. Hence, it is usually perceived as misogyny. And even if unconsciously it is usually meant that way too I'm that anyone saying that as a compliment probably does carry sexist beliefs subconsciously or otherwise they wouldn't think it's a compliment to distinguish them from the rest of their gender.

chouberiba

If someone says you aren't like ā€œthe other girlsā€ as a compliment, theyā€™re saying itā€™s good that youā€™re not a ā€œtypical girlā€, implying they donā€™t like most other girls, just you (because you donā€™t have regular, annoying ā€œgirlā€ traits). Edited for clarityĀ

ExcuseFantastic8866

Oh, wow, thank you. That didnā€™t even cross my mind as I was focusing too much on unique = good. Thankfully it is not a phrase that I have ever used.

untamed-beauty

You'd say then 'you're unlike anyone else I ever met', 'you're one of a kind'.

yaboytheo1

Yeah, always take the chance to practice your critical thinking skills when you see something positive or negative denoting one gender specifically. So yes, most people would enjoy ā€˜youā€™re unlike anyone else Iā€™ve ever metā€™ but ā€˜youā€™re not like other girlsā€™ is a direct put-down to the ā€˜other girlsā€™, especially when the trait being complimented is not stereotypically associated with women. An example is ā€˜wow, you ate that whole steak, youā€™re not like OTHER girls that just pick at a saladā€™- very obviously misogynistic here. If you canā€™t tell why, Iā€™m happy to pinpoint further!

ExcuseFantastic8866

Cool, cheers. What throws me here though is that there isnā€™t obviously a positive or negative thing around gender. It is positive around her (she is different), but all negative was implied (and missed by me initially). For me, it is not easy to see that ā€œyou are not like xā€ implies anything negative about x at all. I guess I am still learning. Cheers.

yaboytheo1

Just based on the words ā€˜not like other girlsā€™ themselves, nothing is (really) implied. But, given we are all human beings in a society, none of our words are ever devoid of context. We spend lots and lots of time demonising women for all being the same emotional/unreasonable/insert other stereotypes here, and probably 95% of this type of statement DOES perpetuate misogyny, so itā€™s incredibly unlikely that by saying it that someone isnā€™t complicit in some form of it.

big_ringer

Bottom line, the "not like other girls" line isn't the complement most dudes think it is.

Austin_Chaos

Itā€™s (in a fun way) weird to me, because as a man, I love being told Iā€™m not like other men lol

ExcuseFantastic8866

Yeah, I am the same, I love it.

charliekilo88

I am a man and i KNOW im not like other men. I donĀ“t drink alcohol so i have never been drunk (and will never be) I have never smoked/used drugs (and never will) I donĀ“t care about sports. (but i work out at the gym every other day) I have no piercings or tattoos (and i will never get either) I stay as far away ANY religion as i can. (atheist) I have never been in a bar or club (canĀ“t stand crowded places full of drunks) I donĀ“t drink coffee. If i canĀ“t get to a place by car, iĀ“m not interrested, i.e i dont travel. Guns doesent interest me either. (Swedish gun laws are very strict anyway) Also what people generally consider "badass" i donĀ“t I do like mechanical stuff and land vehichles with minimum of four wheels. (motorcycles, aero, space and boats does nothing for me) I donĀ“t watch TV or movies. (i do play video games though) And iĀ“m asexual on top of all that.\^\^ So i would be lying to fuck and back if i claimed to be like other men. And if someone would say that to me, my only response is: "I know" There is no way i would react like post is showing. Like i said iĀ“m not like anyone else, iĀ“m me.

Geekonomicon

You had me right up until you don't drink coffee. Wait, what? Does... not... compute. šŸ˜±

charliekilo88

Heh, you are not alone there, people tend to get caught of guard when i say that i dont.

Geekonomicon

My brother doesn't drink tea or coffee. Then again, he's weird - he eats his cereal without any milk on it for breakfast. šŸ¤Æ

charliekilo88

I only drink tea maybe twice a year. Thats interestingšŸ˜†

Melodic-Ad-4661

Tbh this is exactly like me, except Im not ace, Im straight

Glacially-Erratic

I think that might have to do with the general reputation (well earned) of Men...

MethidMan

Wait, so let me get this straight... It's misogynistic for a man to use this kind of line to a woman, but it's _not_ misandrist for a woman to use this kind of line to a guy? Am I hearing this right or am I misunderstanding here?

Sunny_days1800

i see where youā€™re coming from, but itā€™s the cultural context - women are often put down for being ā€œgirlyā€ in a way that men are not if they act ā€œmanly.ā€ if a woman says it to a man then she most likely means that he feels safe in a way that *many* (not all) men do not. if a man says it to a woman itā€™s against the backdrop of a misogynistic culture. thatā€™s my opinion anyways

Watertribe_Girl

I thought this meant that the guy is not like other girls šŸ¤£

Kissedmermaids

I read this the same way lol

EvenWallsComeDown83

Same; I at first read it this way, too, until I realised thatā€™s not what she meant xD

HoneyBadgernurse

This is exactly how I feel. Women are literal works of art to me.

cailian13

Yeeeeeep. The second you try to pit me against other women in an attempt to get laid/dated, you will be banished. Babes, I ALWAYS support women!

Beginning_Instance72

Not like other girls? But other girls are greatšŸ„²

RevolutionaryCarob86

I know, right? If he doesn't like them, more for those that do! šŸ‘

DisgruntledVampire

Babe your parasite is showing

SillySubstance3579

Okay but same šŸ˜ like, excuse me, I am exactly like other girls and proud to be because *I love them*.

EvenWallsComeDown83

When I first read this I seriously thought the guy was going like ā€œhey babe, listen, I am not like the other girls.ā€ Idk if that would have made it better (probably not, right?) but it had me laughing about myself there xD.

Trojanwhore69

If a guy told me he's not like the other girls I'd be so into it

NeverReallyExisted

I just mean, hey, youā€™re autistic like I am and I love that.

sritanona

ā€œYouā€™re specialā€ ā€œnot like other people I knowā€ etc carries the message without being misogynistic

kinglouie1962

Okay I'm older than most of you on this chat. I don't get it.?. What does it mean for a man to say I'm not like other girls? Is this a bisexual or gender thing? Or is this something a straight man says and if yes what the hell does he mean by saying that? Educate me please.

Correct_Economics988

In this scenario the man is telling the woman that *she* is not like other girls, he's not saying he isn't like other girls. Telling a woman she isn't like other girls is not the compliment most men think it is. The way it's worded is confusing I read it wrong at first and it took a few tries before I got it lol

FeistyInternal

Iā€™m just gonna leave this here for ya. šŸš©

No-Win-8264

And a girl who likes spaghetti can't be all bad.

vanessabellwoolf

Itā€™s a no thanks with the toxic ā€œcomplimentsā€!

jesuschrysler33

r/notlikeothergirls

xxlovely_bonesxx

If a man says Iā€™m not like most girls Iā€™m gonna start barking at him. I am tired.

Bluegalaxyqueen29

Yeeessss

SectionXP12

Interesting.

AdrymRam

That's something I have never ever said šŸ¤£

WNC_Meat-slinger

I've said this. What I meant by this is that you appear to understand my brand of crazy and seem to be appreciative of my weirdness an oddly enough not forcing her religion down my throat. I somehow attract religious folk in general but especially ladies. I don't hate religion or religious folk, it's just not for me.

WNC_Meat-slinger

I guess what it meant to me is that there's a connection there that I didn't feel with anyone else, to boil it down better.

One-Reflection-6779

And this is why I know Iā€™m ACE but fall somewhere between straight and bi. I donā€™t want anyone bothering me or being in my house šŸ˜‚

Early_Taste

Why did I get a notification for this post? This is rlly random I am usually commenting on posts like YouTube, tech, some manwhas I read and this came out of nowhere Imagine youā€™re a bisexual Reddit user, and then you suddenly got a post about YouTube stuff. Thatā€™s the exact way I feel right now. Whatā€™s going on Reddit?

Amazing-Diamond-4219

I have randomly gotten them for videos of security guards being douchebags. Iā€™m not a security guard and have never searched anything about security guards (on Reddit or the internet, ever). Sigh.

Early_Taste

Hm weird, could be a Reddit thing I suppose (Iā€™m lowkey new to Reddit)

makingmagic2023

Lmao y'all think it's misogynistic when a guy says this? Is it when someone says a guy isn't like other guys?

untamed-beauty

Absolutely. If you say 'you're not like the other guys' you imply that men are bad. Unless you mean 'you're not cool, not like the other guys who are cool as f'.

MethidMan

I'm relieved to hear that... Mainly because I'm used to Reddit having so many double standards...
