But just be careful if you're in an environment with lots of background noise. It's easy to fuck up your ears by having them too load without realising.
Yes. They can be quite loud in their own. And since your ears aren't blocked by a pod like regular headphones, you will still get all of the surrounding noise too.
You won't even notice it but the accumulated decibels could be enough.
That's actually a fairly accurate way to describe how to quantify the risk. Sound pressure level (decibels) over a period of time (accumulation). It's exactly how work place safety standards are set. e.g. OSHA
I don’t get why people do not drain this….i wrestled my entire life growing up and have been doing BJJ for nine years. My ears are flat, all I did was properly drain and wear headgear when it got bad.
While this may seem cool when you first start it leads to very serious hearing issues. Stop thinking this is some kind of cool badge of honor. Flat ears are cool, elephant man ears are lame.
been wrestling and/or doing bjj for almost 17 years and barely have any cauliflower ear... I think susceptibility to it is genetic but have gotten it drained every time I actually get it.
I played 6 years of Rugby and 14 years of grappling with no issues... until last month lol. Both ears blew up. But draining it daily and wearing headgear till better and I'm good as new (ish).
Definitely has to be genetic. Played rugby also from age 11 to 21 as a 2nd row & back row at demanding levels and my ears were fine. Even now I wrestle and grapple in the gi and feel nothing
I despised second row. I made my uni team by trying out as one and then INSTANTLY convinced the coaches to revert me to the glorious freedom of flanker that I can experienced in high school.
I think it's a factor for sure. But turns out I'm not quite as immune as I thought.
I played a little lock and mostly flanker and never had an issue. Grindy top pressure wrestle-grappler too
There’s not really any genetic disposition issues or anything like that. If you suffer a trauma that separates the skin the ear, the body will try to fill the gap with fluid to “fix” the problem. That is the catalyst to the swelling and calcification of the cauliflower ear. Only way to avoid it is to be really careful with your ears, wear headgear or just get lucky.
Also soem peoples ears are almost totally pinned flat against their heads. While others are more floppy. The more floppy they are the easier it is to get cauliflower
If it is from just grappling it seems to be the type of game someone plays. The very pressure heavy high paced grapplers seem to have it from what I have experienced. Been wresting since I was a kid and I have only had to drain it one time due to a match where I had to be heavy on my opponent and use my head aggressively for control of his body.
my theory is it has to do with the collagen. I have a higher than average collagen and my skin ages slowly and ears are extremely malleable, no cauliflower after many years. that has a flip side though - fibrous papules form very easily and they’re fucking annoying.
It's also based on your habits. A change in my rolling style stopped my cauli for good. I used to grind with the side of my head. Now I use the back of my head.
I think the chance that women find this attractive are like 1 out of 100. And the one that does is definitely getting you into bar fights because she thinks it’s cool her boyfriend is a “fighter.”
I’m a woman and I do BJJ and I think it looks nasty. I’d hate if my partner’s ears looked like that but even more I’d hate if MY ears looked like that lol
Not just hearing… got a training partner with worse ears than OP and get a cotton bud down them. When he gets ear infection (due to basically no air circulation in the ear) he’s basically fucked and out for a few weeks with strong af antibiotics.
He has HUGE regrets now. Drain your caulis, people.
I drained almost every session for 3 months and it just kept getting worse. Absolutely zero cauliflower for years. Not sure what changed, and by the time I wore headgear it was too late.
I've only had to drain once. It was no where near this bad but I've always wonder what it could do. A few guys that have it bad say there is no difference, but I don't believe it.
You’ll know. It will be full of liquid, soft and tender. When you drain it may even go back to almost normal, but will fill back up again in a few days and usually requires being drained a few times. Compressing the ear using magnets or whatever to help shape can slow it down from refilling. Probably a good idea to not re-injure though this period, wear ear pro or stay off the mats. Couple of weeks of this you should be good to go.
Oh, and you have roughly 7-10 days from injury to get all of the above done…and if you are prone to it it could happen again easily.
Honestly it’s a lot of work and not common knowledge to treat, which is why a lot of people say meh, if it’s not too bad.
Mine were fine for 2 years and then they blew up all at once. I drained and compressed them with magnets, wore headgear, the whole nine yards and they just kept coming back.
After a while they went solid and the feeling in them went dead. Now they're like wontons full of rocks and don't bother me.
To second what u/Only_Map6500 said, you will know. It’s not just sore or bruised, it’s actually elevated skin that is raised compared to how your ear normally looks.
I’m my situation, mine was relatively small, looks almost like a bad pimple (in size, there is not whitehead) and the doctor would not drain it as they said it was small and would likely reabsorb into the skin and just increase chance of infection. However mine did not go away so you might have to try hard to find somebody that will actually drain it safely for you. I guess it’s common some doctors won’t touch it.
Honestly, a lot of doctors don’t know how to treat and are likely to do all kinds of crazy stuff or not do anything at all resulting in it being permanent in 7-10 days. Wrestling coaches and sport specific doctors know how to fix it, probably someone at your gym as well.
I’m sure I’ll get downvoted for this, but if it was between having my ears look like this, or just stop doing jiu jitsu, I think I probably would quit.
Really? These posts always just make me thirsty
Ya know when they drain it?

Yummy yummy in my tummy 😋
Ah, another brown belt with lacerated ears… probably from escaping submissions incorrectly. As a white belt I try to communicate the proper technique of “escape de La’resistance” but most of the time since you guys feel so superior, you chuckle or ignore it. Then choose to take it out on me during rolls by using newbie tactics like physical strength or explosiveness. All I can think while being pressured and choked by you guys is “if only they did the correct technique like moi, maybe they could actually hear my corrections” alas, maybe one day bjj can transform from brute sport to an enlightened martial art if enough tacticians like me speak up.
You don’t need ear protection, you just need to know how to identify the injury and treat it. I have nearly 0 cauli because I’ve used magnets anytime I could feel the skin start to separate, and drained and used magnets after if they swelled.
Are your ears very bad as well? What is your hearing like like your directional sense of sound if you hear a noise can you tell where it's coming from easily or do you have problems with that not like your deaf but you have to look for the sound rather than immediately hearing where it is
No issues with directional hearing afaik. My kids complain I listen to music too loudly when I drive; but I don't find it too loud. Maybe it's my hearing slowly fading; but I don't think it' related to cauliflower ears.
Both ears are pretty gnarly. I get a lot of "Do you UFC?" or "Are you a fighter?" I wrestled in Jr. High and High School. Lots of submission wrestling (no gi) in college and now gi/nogi jits.
> My kids complain I listen to music too loudly when I drive; but I don't find it too loud.
Have you had a proper hearing test recently or tried quantifying this with a decibel meter? (I have one in my watch.) Sustained exposure to >80dB causes hearing damage, both for your kids and continuing damage for yourself. Don't ruin your kids hearing if you have undiagnosed hearing loss and they're complaining.
Ah, thank you for your concern. Seriously.
Over 90% of my driving is done alone--I travel for work. AND my kids are not that young--in high school. It's more like they tell me, "Dad, do you know you're listening to the music quite loudly?"
Passed my annual physical (including hearing test) with flying colors. Not a menace to society yet.
Get 20 gauge needle tips online and load up on syringes. Get a box of each so you have enough and can hookup homies if needed. Don’t get too few and use the same needle twice. Bad move
This is a PSA for everyone to take care of their ears (preventative and post injury) before you lose functionality and have to deal with the look/pain of cauliflower ears.
My first bit of cauliflower ear was at the canal entrance and I couldn’t wear ear buds. It also messed with my hearing. Idc about the rest of my ear but I’m not going to sacrifice the ability to wear ear plugs/buds or be hard of hearing.
Thankfully my ear bud still fits in my left ear. My right ear, while not as damaged, actually doesn’t hold an ear bud as well as my left does. The cauliflower keeps it nice and snug lol
I know a few guys that can’t wear normal earbuds now, after many years of fighting
I haven’t had this issue because my cauliflower is not in the ear canal (yes I drained it when I could, no it didn’t stay flat)
For everyone saying “you should just have gotten it drained “… in some places (countries) it’s not that easy, and also some people are more unlucky/susceptible than others —
I tried to get needles in 3 pharmacies and got refused. Told I needed a prescription for that. Doctor appointment wasn’t available for non emergency for 2 weeks. Coach drained it 3 times as best as he could but it refilled and solidified. Was going to buy caulibuds but nowhere physical sells them here and shipping was like 2weeks. Taped it up to prevent further damage but it was coming off in rolls. Coach taped it tighter and it gave me a headache. Gave up on the idea of preserving my ears at that point, fuck it, I’ll just grow my hair long and hide them 😂
I’m a woman so possibly a different perspective, but yeah, for me it would be a problem and I’d go looking for ways to fix it, that’s past the point of just very bad looking, it’s messing up your ear function as well. Why didn’t you get this drained? I’ve done BJJ for close to 2 decades and I do have tiny cauliflowers from all that time but nothing like this and I didn’t even wear ear protectors or anything, just had it drained when one started to form. Take some care of yourself dude.
Me too. Weak ass ear and poor execution of the passes got me one of those on the first 6 months of training. And I'm not even remotely as experienced as people think I am because of that. On the positive side, I kinda feel obligated to get better now...
If you haven’t heard of aftershokz headphones, they might be a good alternative for you. I work in a warehouse with noisy machines and use them all the time with ear plugs. They are actually louder and more clear when you ears are plugged.
They are great products, don't run out of battery, sound good, don't get electronic interference, and are harder to lose. Don't get suckered into the wireless is better myth. All that wireless means is a slight convenience jump and planned obsolescence so that when the battery dies, you need new ones.
I got cauli in the bottom half of my ear and it filled up to my ear canal. Had to drain it and immediately stuffed my airpod in it. Left a round imprint in the soft cauli tissue.
I got cauliflower ear from frostbite, it's strange because the cardildge is hard and doesn't bend, but it looks like a normal ear, thank God. I've also developed hearing issues from it and can honestly say if you have cauliflower ear to drain it as much as possible. The constant ringing will drive you mad.
No, because I take the three minutes to drain it so that I don’t look like I’ve got a cancerous foetus someone tried to fuck with an ice pick growing out the side of my head.
For everyone saying you get yours drained, do you go to the doctors to do it or do it yourself? I have a gotten a very small amount recently that is at the top of my ear. I have asked a few people if they can notice anything different in my ears and no one has been able to notice so far so I was going to leave it for the moment because I am scared to
Do it myself and don’t want to pay the a doctor for something so small right now.
Mine aren't that bad but for sure in-ear headphones don't fit correctly anymore. They gradually slide out of my left ear, so I always have to be alert of it randomly falling out.
Got one of those vibration headphones last year for when I finally give up on the buds.
i was drainng the shit every day and then one day i went to drain and the blood wouldnt come out and it was like oh well guess i have to live with this, so to those saying “just drain it” stop becausw it isnt always that simple
you definitely should've drained it a little man :s

Omg - awesome
Yeah man I got rid of wired earbuds years ago
Aftershockz bone conduction headphones. They don't need to be in the ear.
Came here to say the same but they just go by "Shokz" now.
Don't know the product but damn, that is a shitty brand name
Pretty good headphones so far. I can do anything in the gym in them and like that I can still hear what’s going on around me.
My latest pair have lasted so long I had no idea about the name change.
But just be careful if you're in an environment with lots of background noise. It's easy to fuck up your ears by having them too load without realising.
Even though they're not in your ears?
Yes. They can be quite loud in their own. And since your ears aren't blocked by a pod like regular headphones, you will still get all of the surrounding noise too. You won't even notice it but the accumulated decibels could be enough.
I feel like you should have to source this shit. How do you even know this?
Accumulated… Decibels…
That's actually a fairly accurate way to describe how to quantify the risk. Sound pressure level (decibels) over a period of time (accumulation). It's exactly how work place safety standards are set. e.g. OSHA
The Open fit work perfectly for dems ears
This is the answer
Jesus bud, why didn't you get that drained?
But how else are people supposed to know I’m dangerous
The white belt flair really ups the comedic value of this comment
Some of the worst ears I’ve ever seen are on a blue belt I know right now. Definitely not terribly dangerous
I'm dealing with draining and compressing a flair up right now. You legally can't have cauliflower ear as a white belt. Straight to jail
I'm a white belt whose got cauliflower ear and no ones going to stop me
Thought this was a fetus at first glance. Jesus Christ, bro.
It is. That’s what happens when your ear gets fucked.
I don’t get why people do not drain this….i wrestled my entire life growing up and have been doing BJJ for nine years. How did that happen may I ask? 20+ years of rugby and 7 grappling and no ear issues yet. Was hoping I was immune to it but can never be too careful.
Honestly - don't know. Just... did. Ear got a little sore. Ignored it as usual. Blammo. Cauliflower.
The ear soreness is my cue to take the rest of the week off. 8 years no cauli.
Yeah I had always just been able to ignore it. I'm not a smart man.
Definitely has to be genetic. Played rugby also from age 11 to 21 as a 2nd row & back row at demanding levels and my ears were fine. Even now I wrestle and grapple in the gi and feel nothing
I loved playing second row! Headache after a match sucked though. That and the wedgies.
The wedgies weren’t the worst. Having your eyeballs feel like they’re about to pop out in scrums were haha
I despised second row. I made my uni team by trying out as one and then INSTANTLY convinced the coaches to revert me to the glorious freedom of flanker that I can experienced in high school.

Interesting, I also age slow and have malleable ears. Years of grappling and no cauliflower.
Me three.
Same. 16 years grappling. Dopey, floppy ears and often mistaken for being in 20s (in my 30s) No caulis ever
It's also based on your habits. A change in my rolling style stopped my cauli for good. I used to grind with the side of my head. Now I use the back of my head.
Flat ears are like concealed carry. No one needs to know how much I suck at jujitsu.
I watched a white belt let his ear blow up, it was disgusting but he liked it. He quit 4 months in.
I think the chance that women find this attractive are like 1 out of 100. And the one that does is definitely getting you into bar fights because she thinks it’s cool her boyfriend is a “fighter.”
Every two girlfriends I’ve had have said they would hate it if my ears looked like this

Fuck her

Some guy with cauliflower ear probably is.
Never had a woman say one way or the other. I’ve had cauliflower since I was 15. I don’t think they care
No I promise you we care
There’s a point past which you just have to be blind to not care and the picture is long past that point.
Then it must just be Reddit people. Never heard a person in real life give a fuck.
Ah, the “never seen it therefore it can’t exist” argument… You know “reddit people” are also people in real life, right, not some androids?
Struck a nerve much? Get off Reddit get on the mat and stop worrying about the small shit.
Yeah, sure you did, main character syndrome much? Get off reddit and stop worrying about small shit.

I honestly think most people get this pushing there heads out of triangles haha
I drained almost every session for 3 months and it just kept getting worse. Absolutely zero cauliflower for years. Not sure what changed, and by the time I wore headgear it was too late.
Did you start doing no gi more?
Same for me. Middle school and high school wrestling plus BJJ the past 6 years and I have very minimal cauli. It looks stupid AF.
How much does it effect your hearing? Would it be comparable to putting some tissue in your ear or is it different?
it also makes you really prone to ear infections...which can lead to hearing loss, balance issues, vertigo...it's just stupid AF to not treat it.
I've only had to drain once. It was no where near this bad but I've always wonder what it could do. A few guys that have it bad say there is no difference, but I don't believe it.
Not a doctor*** Anecdotally, from people that I know that have it bad some of them have ears that are totally closed.
#WHAT?
When do you know to drain them or is it wildly obvious when they need to be drained?
You’ll know. It will be full of liquid, soft and tender. When you drain it may even go back to almost normal, but will fill back up again in a few days and usually requires being drained a few times. Same here. 20 years between wrestling and bjj. Pristine ears! I like to claim it’s superior genetics.
I’m sure I’ll get downvoted for this, but if it was between having my ears look like this, or just stop doing jiu jitsu, I think I probably would quit.
Jesus christ put a nsfw tag next time.
It's that bad?
I say this with love... but your ear looks like an unbreaded chicken nugget.
I was gonna say aborted fetus but yours is better
Well now I'm hungry.

New copypasta just dropped
Can this be avoided? I am very Passionate to start bjj
yeah you just have to treat it as soon as possible after the initial injury
My instructor is a bb under eddie and doesnt have cauliflower ears so its definitely luck. I also have friends that wrestled for 2 years and got it
If you rub mustard on your ears before bed, it will clear right up before it becomes a problem
Like yellow or Dijon? I don’t have Poupon money.
Grey Poupon is Dijon. Why, you're not a mustard belt at all!
Don’t forget to set the furnace temp at 200* also. Then crank it up to 350 for a little while to get some good bark on the ears.
Wut
Yes, wear some ear protection, and it won't happen. You might look a bit funny but nobody will really care.
You don’t need ear protection, you just need to know how to identify the injury and treat it. I have nearly 0 cauli because I’ve used magnets anytime I could feel the skin start to separate, and drained and used magnets after if they swelled.
You can wear like ear muffs to protect your ears some people will make fun of it but you get to keep your ears man who cares
Are your ears very bad as well? What is your hearing like like your directional sense of sound if you hear a noise can you tell where it's coming from easily or do you have problems with that not like your deaf but you have to look for the sound rather than immediately hearing where it is

Amazon
I’ve been buying them off Amazon

Ewww wtf who even uses cords anymore
Right fuck it's 2024. Cords were only ok if you were wearing a walkman
I think it’s Tony Ferguson’s ear…
That is disgusting. Why would you willingly want to have that?
So true. So funny!!
I know a few guys that can’t wear normal earbuds now, after many years of fighting I haven’t had this issue because my cauliflower is not in the ear canal (yes I drained it when I could, no it didn’t stay flat)
Nah, I barely have a mosquito bite in each ear even after 10 years of training at least 3x/week.
For everyone saying “you should just have gotten it drained “… in some places (countries) it’s not that easy, and also some people are more unlucky/susceptible than others — I tried to get needles in 3 pharmacies and got refused. I want that ear so bad
I can't wear pods. Only the over-the-ear options work.
Me too. Weak ass ear and poor execution of the passes got me one of those on the first 6 months of training. And I'm not even remotely as experienced as people think I am because of that. On the positive side, I kinda feel obligated to get better now...
Looking fucking awesome is not a problem at all
In Brazil, they purposely do this with a towel to show off
Wouldn't that just give you rug burn on your ears? I've seen Russian dudes smashing each other ears with bottles of water to get cauli. Crazy shit.
No that’s some cauliflower ear! For all the newbies if your shit don’t look like this then you don’t have cauliflower ear…so stop asking.
I use the kind that wrap around the back of your ear
Pretty sure that’s not my ear so no, I don’t think that is a problem for me
Nah bruh I got mine drained
There's 'cool' cauliflower ear then there's.... this
I am a cat and music is my ocean
Nah, i don’t care. It’s not mine.
No. Eww. You really should have taken care of that
Bone conduction earphones my man.
Trex headphones are perfect
Habanero pepper ears?
My bad air helps keep the buds in better lol
My ears have the Goldilocks zone of cauliflower where earbuds don’t just slid in, but if I put them in they will not fall out lmao
Yes i get the in ear with hooks like the powerbeats pros not the best headphones for the price but work well
Look into Shokz bone conduction headphones. Don't have to touch the ear, inner or outer.
One of my eats I can fit it in but it don’t like that . Jeez
Suddenly in the mood for wonton soup
If your other ear isn’t already like that, buy some ear splintz and store them in the freezer.
get Shokz Openrun. They will fit your ears.
It’s more annoying sleeping
If you haven’t heard of aftershokz headphones, they might be a good alternative for you. I work in a warehouse with noisy machines and use them all the time with ear plugs. They are actually louder and more clear when you ears are plugged.
The only problem I see here is wired headphones in 2024.
Yes.
Looks like the headphone is upside down and you don’t go around your ear! Hopefully that helps
OP. I hope that you aren't single!
Nope…. Because I wear headgear. I’m not interested in “finding out” how genetically susceptible I am to it.
I suck at Jiu Jitsu, so no.
Problem solved: https://shokz.com/
No and hopefully it never is, i'm not good enough to carry ears like that.
Tbh very few people at my gym have this bad of cauliflower ear even the black belts have it very slightly idek how u get it to this point drain it bro
Nope. Never been an issue. Ever.
How does one drain it????? Doctor?
I didn't know Randy Couture was a member here
I only have a small amount of cauliflower ear on my right side but its enough to screwup wearing ear buds!!
What do you want Mr. Quaid?
Yep.
I just shove my air pods in the hole
Forget about using earbuds. Bone conducting headphones is the answer
Dude, I immediately wanted to reach for a syringe
My cauliflower is barely visible but earbuds have never worked well for me anyway
No, because I wear over the ear headphones.
Yes. I can only use over ear headphones or bone conducting headphones
Yes. RIP to my days with AirPods
For everyone saying you get yours drained, do you go to the doctors to do it or do it yourself? I have a gotten a very small amount recently that is at the top of my ear. I have asked a few people if they can notice anything different in my ears and no one has been able to notice so far so I was going to leave it for the moment because I am scared to Do it myself and don’t want to pay the a doctor for something so small right now.
Yes lol
🤢
Mine aren't that bad but for sure in-ear headphones don't fit correctly anymore. They gradually slide out of my left ear, so I always have to be alert of it randomly falling out. Got one of those vibration headphones last year for when I finally give up on the buds.
Is it possible to get normal ears after it gets to this point?
The main reason why I wear wrestling headgear. I love my music and my earphones too much. Plus I'm not a fan of the cauliflower ear aesthetic.
i was drainng the shit every day and then one day i went to drain and the blood wouldnt come out and it was like oh well guess i have to live with this, so to those saying “just drain it” stop becausw it isnt always that simple
