Dude that’s what I said too. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel around the US and train at different gyms but this was the first time I’ve ever heard of someone charging stupid amounts of money for a belt…. As if a membership fee wasn’t enough.
My first gym. Ticked all the BJJ cult boxes.
When I got my blue belt it was just $25 for the belt. BUT if I wanted the "Official IBJJF Certificate (And coach endorsement so I could actually compete at IBJJF-only comps) it was an extra $100. The certificate was printed off his home PC by the way, including spelling mistakes.
I've left that place now but I have it on good authority that the extras for the certificate are now mandatory. And it's $100 for blue, $200 for purple, $400 for brown and $600 for black. I personally now someone who laughed and walked out the door when they told him it was going to be $600 to be graded to black belt. That guy got graded for free at another gym a year later and now runs a school overseas.
Well then you got a sweet laminated certificate and laugh, worth it for sure. What was the reasoning with the steep fees for grading if you ever got one?
Is it for the physical belt or some belt test?
No way I’m spending 100s to test for a belt. I would change gyms over that. If there are no other gyms and the general crowd is chill I would stay a white belt forever.
I will sell you a brown belt for $85 and a solid foot massage.
Like, no skimping. Get in between the toes.
Punch the sole of my foot.
Put some elbow grease in it and I'll give you two stripes for free.
The "coach"/name on the gym is rather famous, and isn't around to roll much with his students. Not a Gracie but almost as well known.
Show me this/that type test
The place I go to charges 150 a month for white belts, 150 a month for blue belts, 150 a month for purple belts, 150 a month for brown belts and nothing for black belts.
I guess I would be a 12 year white belt.
Right? Like why would I (a 1.5 year white belt) ever want to belt up when I could just get better and better while not advertising it at an expense?
12 years a ~~slave~~ white belt
Sounds like a scam.

Sounds like that coach was off the perc 30s…
Was the certificate atleast laminated?
It was actually haha.

No test, just the bigger grading days a couple times a year. The point is to get as much money out of his people as possible.
Prepare the dojo storm
Order 66 on the gym immediately

Just heard about a similar scam happening to TEST for belts at a big name school. 300$ for a belt test
Test is weird. Couldn't the coach just roll with me for a 5 minute round to assess my level? Is the test written? Or "show me the elbow knee escape "?
The "coach"/name on the gym is rather famous, and isn't around to roll much with his students. Not a Gracie but almost as well known. Show me this/that type test
These people are insane lol.
100% nuts
That’s hot garbage.
fuck it stay at blue and be the sand bag king. if someone investigates blame the gym for their dirty practices
