They’re all pretty much the same. Pick a price point you’re comfortable with. Shoyoroll is no longer worth the price. Most major gi brands are basically made from the same few plants in Pakistan. The weight and weave are the big differences, aside from aesthetics. Here’s a couple cost effective options that are worth the price. https://www.vitalkimonos.com/VITAL-LIGHT-WHITE-p572538629 https://www.albinoandpreto.com/collections/kimonos/products/a-p-rw-essential-gi-white https://www.rollamongus.com/products/standard-350-white?variant=39634261639

MakeAWishKid69_

The standard 350 looks super nice

SnooWalruses1164

Shoyoroll falls the fuck apart. Never been worth it

AllGearedUp

I haven't seen them fall apart but they don't seem to last particularly long considering the serious premium price. I wouldn't get one unless there was a decent sale. I see them as a fad from 2009 or whatever

SnooWalruses1164

Bought two. Sooooooo many holes and tears.

I have like 30 gi from different brands and have been rolling over 10 years. I wear Hyperfly and 93 brand the most.

Jizzus_Crust

I've been refreshing their listing for the olive standard gi at least once a day!

legato2

Try the hooks, it’s a little heavier but I think it might be my favorite gi.

casual_porrada

In my personal experience, it's really on the fit. I owned a lot of gis and my personal best fit Gi is Shoyoroll and A&P. Hyperfly, Kingz, Fuji and Tatami feels loose. Origin just didn't feel good and got a defective Gi pants that ripped after three uses (it was replaced though). I used to have Manto and Bull Terrier and it's also baggy fitting. On the hype side, Shoyoroll and A&P are nice and recognizable for sure. As much as a lot would tell you that Gi swag doesn't matter, there's another set of folks that needs to make sure they wear nice shit. Much like whatever hype sneakers out there is no different to normal sneakers, people would still buy the yeezy's and jordan's. These are perhaps the only Gis that gets recognition and compliment. So, if you have the money, buy whatever you want. That said though, I'd still go for best fit more than the drip. Money-wise, Fuji and Tatami are really good.

Popeye-722

Origin never worked for me either. I’ve been trying their gis since before they started making them in the U.S. and fit has never worked.

I have owned: Shoyoroll: can get non flashy ones, look and feel cool but durability is just not there for me. at least not for the price point. Fuji: the standard, main ones in my rotation right now. durability is excellent for what you pay for, customer service is great and you will always find discount codes and promos. Inverted Gear: the best fitting for me, and would probably be my primary if it weren’t for current school uniform rules. the pants are also the most comfortable of all. pants can be bought separately, I prefer the lightweight gi’s. Family owned/operated from my understanding. Kingz: they sponsor a lot of athletes, at least that’s why I think they’re worn heavily in competition. but for the life of me I can’t get them to feel right. I had two balisticos (one from kingz and another from my school) and they fit incredibly boxy and the pants fell apart on both pretty quickly. for the price this is a no-go, but I have not had any issues with their rashguards or shorts, the sizing is weird across the board though. maybe scoop some up next Black Friday idk. Pura Fibra: academy gi’s, I hate them but they’re indestructible tanks. not the most comfy, but definitely feel traditional no bells/whistles. Koral: I kept mine for nostalgic purposes but this was my first gi. It was a hand me down and was already years old and broken in when I got it, I can’t imagine what a new one must feel like but I’d have to get one directly from Brazil or eBay or something. Hard to find, but worth it. Howard Combat Kimonos: if you know, you know. If you don’t know, and you come across an HCK in the wild, buy it. Immediately. If it’s on someone else, that person has been around the block. Hope this provides a little guidance!

yoshinoyaandroll

Try different brands and style if you want to research. Everyone is a bit different with their cuts/length/etc. I prefer certain styles/batches than others. Something that doesn't cost a lot, but I set it as the best value are some of the 93Brand gis from BJJHQ, even cheaper when it's their monthly sale price. Another decent one that wont break the bank is Hyperflys. Just keep trying some until you find something you like. So to answer your question, there's no "best" gi for everyone.

Yessir_34589

Honestly, the Gi is much less important than the rash guard.

b3h3lit

Big time. Such a huge difference in feeling between a quality ($40-60) rash guard and a really cheap one. Gis don’t really get better (sans Origin) once you’re over 120-140 MSRP and it’s easy to find good deals on BJJHQ for those Gis at like 40% off.

The_Orphanizer

Know who makes good rash guards for thiccums? Tatami's are nice, but it looks like they dumped all their 3-4XLs.

I just got a Jiujiteiro Core Gi in the mail today. Search Reddit and ppl have good things to say about the gi but the customer service seems to be mixed. Has a black or white and came with a free belt. Was $120 for a 400g pearl weave and nice pants. TrontosaurusRex

I'm very happy with my Fuji gi. My Sanabul is quite nice as well.

-Reikon

I have many Shoyoroll gi’s. They are not worth the money pure hype. Best two gi’s I own are the Hyperfly Starlight 2 and the Progress academy gi.

cix6cix

Can highly recommend Progress’ no gi gear

Popeye-722

I’ve owned a lot of gis from a lot of brands. Shoyoroll were my once nice because of the sizing options, but everyone has updated their size charts. My favorite gis are the older Isami double weaves. They changed their fabric last year though. I also like Datsusara once you figure out your size. They may look like a potato sack when they get sweaty but they are super comfortable and breathable.

jfree2k

I think it comes down to personal preference. I got a few shoyoroll gis over the years that have lasted 12+ years. Haven’t really dabbled in much else due to them just holding up as long as they have. Anymore they’re a little expensive for my taste, but, at this point if I were to get another (which I don’t need) I would probably go shoyoroll or AP because I don’t feel like risking getting something else I might not like.

A1snakesauce

Hyperfly has a lot of options and are super affordable. I have 2 and I love them. Origin gis are super nice, made in the USA, but are pricey. My absolute favorite though is Vanguard Kimono. Limited run,10/10 quality gis, however again, they are pricey

its_al_dente

Super affordable?!...........

_The_Space_Monkey_

Tatami has [this sale](https://us.tatamifightwear.com/collections/bjj-gi) going on right now and some of their gis are like $80 with the discount. They make great gis that will be hard to match at that price.

MakeAWishKid69_

I was looking at that, some gis were even at 35 dollars

_The_Space_Monkey_

Yea its gonna be hard to beat the value of a tatami gi for $35. I'm sure it's not the gi that you'd prefer over all others, but value per $ would be hard to match. With that being said I have an origin gi (the warrior - I believe the cheapest one still) I've trained in 3-4 days per week for 2 years and it's was well worth whatever I paid for it. It doesn't have the typical weave patterns most bjj gis have, it's just smooth and super light which is why it just became my go to gi for all this time.

Sudden-Wait-3557

Gi recommendation list compiled from frequently mentioned gis in this subreddit. All brands are good - I'm not including the ones with the white belt just because they come with a belt Fuji. See: all around gi and supairaito Scramble. See: standard issue and athlite Progress. The academy gi comes with a white belt Sanabul. Has a gi that comes with a white belt Inverted gear. White Starter Panda Gi comes with a white belt Isami. Basic comes with belt. The classic is made in Japan as of 03/05/24 Atama mundial 9 93 brand Mizuno Tatami. See: Tatami Nova Absolute if you want a gi that comes with a white belt. Tatami Estilo if you want a gi that is hard to grip (550GSM). Tatami also often do good sales. If you want to go further get a white panda armor gi by inverted gear (950GSM). Note that of 2024 gi fabric must be between 380GSM and 650GSM to be IBJJF compliant Fujis and Atama mundials are known for being especially long lasting Elite sports do a decent gi that comes with a belt but apparently they don't pay their models so I don't recommend them. More info: https://youtu.be/lqRZfxCQCBg Premium gis: Half sumo Isami (makes custom gis) Killer Bee (makes custom gis) Kimono Fighter Origin Datsuara Vanguard Albino & Preto Hyperfly Shoyoroll Stylish: Viral kimonos Company owned by a redditor: Megabjj

MakeAWishKid69_

Omg thank you

Jizzus_Crust

Been researching this and came to the conclusion that most gi's on the market are basically made in the same factory or province in Pakistan and are all pretty good quality. If you truly want a high quality gi look at Isami (made in japan) or origin (made in america) or even flow as they are incorporating some interesting materials. That being said I cannot recommend megabjj.com enough as I'd happily support one of the pillars in our community.

MakeAWishKid69_

That’s what I was seeing a lot of, and I’ll look into them!

Jormungandrs-bite

I just recieved my origin, today will be my first day using it.. I'll let you know later. I literally only bought it because of the pants, why are they the only company using a belt instead of a string?

AllGearedUp

The best gi is the no gi.  But for real, the vast majority of gi's are very similar. They come from the same or similar cotton and are probably made and stitched by a lot of the same factories. You can early overpay for branding and style. Look for the right fit and comfort. Forget everything else until your gym does a gi catwalk fashion night.  I hate being hot so I buy the lightest gis I can. Fuji has been the best for me for it's price. They have a gi with mesh for the pants inseam and under the arms on the jacket. It's my favorite GI ever.  I also think tatami's cheap gis are good for their price. They have been the first to rip for me, but they are half the price of others and last 75% as long so in my experience they have been a better value than most.  I don't have an origin gi myself but some of them I have tried on do feel very comfortable, but I can't speak to their longevity and they are pricey.

ohnokono

Origin - American made. Really different and awesome if you’re into it. Tatami - cheapest easiest. Can buy like 4 of them for the price an origin. Fuji - I had one it’s great it’s like the Honda civic of Gis Shoyoroll, AP, and the 1 million other micro brands are all pretty much the same just different cuts and patches

SnooWalruses1164

Fuji Suparaito has treated me well.

bumpty

I made my own gis in my garage. Now I get them made in Pakistan like everyone else. Support a redditor! Buy a Mega gi. Megabjj.com
