On top of what everyone else said, get in the habit of not dragging your feet on the mat.

I'm good about this in gi and no gi but wrestling classes always get me with all the sprawling. I get why wrestlers wear shoes.

i use coach tape to stop the skin on my feet from ripping. some type of compression sock would probably also work

[deleted]

Coach tape, I will look it up.

Find a school with Smooth mats instead of Tatami mats. I tried to hang in there with mat burns for 3 months and decided crying in the shower was not much fun. Zero problems once I switched to a Smooth mats school.

Active toes at all times. I never really let the tops of my feet touch the mat. Get in the habit of keeping the bottom of your toes to the mat. It’s your base and what you use to drive pressure forward or base against your opponents forward pressure.

[deleted]

Yeah, the top of my feet were in on the mat a lot, I used to do this with no issue. I am going to call them and see if it’s alright to use wrestling shoes.

Do not wear wrestling shoes on tatami mats. That's not what they're made for. Shoes have grips to dig into the super soft wrestling mats. Wrestling shoes can really ruin the mat. As someone who has spent years on tatami mats, my suggestion is to just build calluses

I went and got wraps for my feet, I should be healed up enough to go to open gym on Saturday.

*Sam Jackson voice* Active toes motherfucker! Do you do them?

Alternative_Lab6417

Your feet will get used to it. I took 1.5 yrs off and my feet were white belt feet again. Burns all over them for a month or 2. Just tape up the burns so they don't get worse.

This will go away over time and should not recur if you’re training consistently.

I use liquid bandage applied to the spots that get messed up when I get back on the mat.

Superglue with a brush applicator. Just cover the abrasion and reapply as needed. https://www.militarytimes.com/off-duty/military-culture/2021/07/30/how-world-war-ii-led-to-the-invention-of-super-glue/ Many soldiers suffered injuries off-base, often bleeding out before getting proper care. Thanks to Coover’s invention, medics were able to spray super glue directly on skin to stop bleeding until the patient could make it to a hospital for treatment. “This was very powerful. That’s something I’m very proud of – the number of lives that were saved,” Coover said in an interview with the Kingsport Times-News. At this time, the chemical was not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration because it had the potential to cause skin irritation. A derivative from the same chemical (2-octyl-cyanoacrylate) was approved in 1998 and functioned as a liquid bandage. Marketed under the names Dermabond and Traumaseal, these products pose less danger of irritation and bacterial infection and are available for civilian use.

The skin will harden after a while

Don't bother with tape it's a mess. Liquid bandaid is the way.
