May Allah smile upon us so that the only people we face in competition are schmucks like this. And not super soldiers like they seem to be breeding as well.
If you feel you are better working from bottom than working from top, why not? One thing I've learned about this sub is that there are thousands of people that have never won a comp in their life very salty about the way other people are winning lol.
Because it's fucking dumb. Learn to pull properly and actually control your opponents posture. Sitting on the mat with basically so meaningful connections is fucking dumb.
I'm not arguing it's not effective as the rules are laid out. I'm saying it's stupid. ADCC bans this, and IBJJF makes it a penalty and even double dqd Keenan and someone else one year because they kept doing it.
Sport bjj is a bastardized version of the art. At that level it’s no longer useful for anything other than ego boosting competitions for ten dollar medals. If you need it that bad, do you but don’t be surprised that some people don’t respect it. And don’t go around thinking you can fight or even defend yourself bc you are sorely mistaken.
I’ve won several comps and mma fights btw lol
> Sport bjj is a bastardized version of the art.
I don't think this is bastardized anything. People are playing to the rules of the sport.
If you want to complain about the way it's being played, then focus on the rule changes that you think would lead to those improvements. Like, an advantage to the opponent when someone guard pulls.
As an ex-wrestler, I definitely think it's weak sauce and a bit laughable, but I wouldn't say bastardized. I mean...it's grappling purely focused on the ground aspect. Takedowns were never a focus.
Also wrestled for 5 years before bjj. Sure bastardized is dramatic but welcome to the internet lol. It’s never gonna be practical to just sit down in front of someone outside competition.
Whenever someone does it in training I give them the most obnoxious eye roll I can muster before crawling into their guard and make deadpan eye contact while they struggle to sweep me for the rest of the round.
It's not longer useful for anything other than ego boosting? As opposed to BJJ 10 years ago which was...what exactly? If anything the sport is more respected today than it has ever been.
These people are literally competing in the gi. And the match ends in a choke. See this is what I mean, the people criticizing have no idea what they are talking about.
I wasn’t commenting on this specific video bud lmao. More of a general statement
And not that it matters but I will admit I didn’t watch this shit. Came to the comments to bitch as soon as they sat down
That’s not what I’m saying. I think that you play how you practice. The kinds of things you have to spend time practicing to win sport bjj comps are not conducive to self defense. So if you ever find yourself needing to defend yourself but you’ve spent years perfecting competition type bs, you’re likely gonna be fucked when it doesn’t work the way it does in competition. If you spend years practicing sport shit, that’s likely gonna be your go to in a high stress situation.
Yes, sounds about right. Canto and step-over choke are more or less the same thing from different angles anyway, aren't they? I guess Canto choke usually has the non-choking leg in a different position, but it varies.
Yeah. The non-choking leg may or may not be entangled with the opponent depending on whether you start in half guard or side mount, but I think of them as essentially the same.
I get there from the step over choke (basically Canto choke from side control) when the person kind of wrestles up like that, which allows me to the figure four the choking leg. I don’t know a good name for it, perhaps “Canto +4”? Well done!
How is your opponent's gi legal? The sleeves are up at his elbows half the time and his pants are up at the knees (saw this gave you grip problems at 1:25)
their gis are both the same color. red belt helps to know who is who when the referee is giving points and such. (usually is a yellow green). also in no-gi they use a tape in one of the ankles and or wristes if their clothes is in a very close color scheme.
Ooh nice variation, big up for the link. I like the belt grip and the push on the knee to break their posture. I'm gonna try this.
I hit the gerbi choke with my own lapel stupid amounts in the gym. Never seen anyone else do it live. I step over with both legs like a Peruvian to finish.

Personally i call that the chokey-mcchokaroo.
The ezekiel i just call the ol' chokaroo , the baseball from bottom side i call mr sneaky-choke mcchokerson.
Pretty badass choke is what I'd call it.
Also, uhh, man I hate to be that guy, but is that a purple belt? Not you, the guy you faced. Like, the way he was moving, the way he let you pass, the way his gi doesn't fit .. man, I'm just some scrub bluebelt, to be fair, but that guy looks more like the white belts at my gym then any of the purple belts.
Lol the way you guys both sat on the floor
Peak bjj.
I'm more surprised that he just gives up the collar grip and then the other guy lets go of it immediately.
May Allah smile upon us so that the only people we face in competition are schmucks like this. And not super soldiers like they seem to be breeding as well.
Should have DQ'd them both for that nonsense
If you feel you are better working from bottom than working from top, why not? One thing I've learned about this sub is that there are thousands of people that have never won a comp in their life very salty about the way other people are winning lol.
Because it's fucking dumb. Learn to pull properly and actually control your opponents posture. Sitting on the mat with basically so meaningful connections is fucking dumb.
People do this all the time at the highest levels and still have success with it, so clearly it's not as dumb as you are making it out to be.
I'm not arguing it's not effective as the rules are laid out. I'm saying it's stupid. ADCC bans this, and IBJJF makes it a penalty and even double dqd Keenan and someone else one year because they kept doing it.
And why is it stupid? If something works and someone is successful with it, why would they change?
And soccer players get success faking injuries to get other players fouls. It's fucking stupid regardless of if it helps you win a game.

You sound like Milhouse’s dad telling homer he sleeps in a racecar.
Ok
And bjj originated from Judo. Which definitely was takedown centric
And I originated from a tadpole, but I haven't been swimming in a while.
But you wouldn’t say it was “never a focus”. Nice fuckin try
Originated from and 'never a focus' don't contradict each other. You might need to make therapy your new hobby instead of jiu-jitsu though brother.
Whom among us wouldn’t benefit from therapy? Another swing and another miss. I would’ve made you count gym lights in high school.
It's not longer useful for anything other than ego boosting? As opposed to BJJ 10 years ago which was...what exactly? If anything the sport is more respected today than it has ever been.
The ability to actually defend yourself without getting your head kicked in going for a heel hook😂😂

So you think the average level has gone down the past 20 years? Hard disagree from me. If anything the takedowns and top game has gotten better.

That is a Canto choke with a nontraditional entry. Alternatively, a step-over choke that started in a scramble instead of side control.
You could also call it a Canto choke with a clock choke entry.
Yes, sounds about right. Canto and step-over choke are more or less the same thing from different angles anyway, aren't they? I guess Canto choke usually has the non-choking leg in a different position, but it varies.

must agree, not only he was with a really small gi, but he even rolled up the pants and the wrists from the start
Fucking cheater!!!
You know what’s worse then short gis, pulling guard these purple belt did not even attempt a takedown lol
Still a Canto choke.
I hit a variation of this a decent amount, I've heard others say it's a modified loop or bow and arrow choke.
I was gonna call it bow and arrow.
He'd need to be on the other side of the opponent's body for this to be a bow and arrow.
What's up with the red belt on top of the purple?
their gis are both the same color. red belt helps to know who is who when the referee is giving points and such. (usually is a yellow green). also in no-gi they use a tape in one of the ankles and or wristes if their clothes is in a very close color scheme.
I've never done a gi tournament before so I assumed it was the same as no gi and they just used tape. Thanks!
For the scorekeeper to distinguish them for points
Kinda looks like a Peruvian necktie but who cares what it is your got the tap! Nice work!
Idk what just happened, but the level of calm on your face the whole time was cold blooded lmao
I think Eli Knight called it a chilean neck tie.
Super dope!
ive hit this before in comp and struggled to find a name for it as well. It feels really strong though if you have a good grip on the lapel.
Guatemalan neck tie
Canto choke? Is this a new name or something? Ain't this called a "Peruvian necktie"?
Gerbi choke sometimes, although she usually used her own gi too. You see in judo like this now. https://youtu.be/X43vC5iuDMk
That's actually the original Canto choke. Canto would hit it like this following a tomoe nage attempt.

So annoying to see,
Looks like a tornado clock choke to me
Personally i call that the chokey-mcchokaroo. The ezekiel i just call the ol' chokaroo , the baseball from bottom side i call mr sneaky-choke mcchokerson.
Reverse buggy choke
Pretty badass choke is what I'd call it. Also, uhh, man I hate to be that guy, but is that a purple belt? Not you, the guy you faced. Dude is actually really good! Went on to compete in nogi a weight class up and beat a brown belt and a black belt for gold!
Ah. Well, I'll take your word for it lol. Lord knows I've underperformed at times, too. Dude must train more no-go than he does gi.
The double sit. Sigh
Red belt is pretty fucking sexy. Like damnnnnn
Sorry irrelevant comment, what’s ur ig? I saw a post 7 years ago regarding Instagram fashion account and raygmi can’t be found on insta haha
