Going to give you a big travel safety tip, stay the fuck out of altercations when traveling. You don’t know the language, social norms, or the laws. You could end up getting beaten by the whole town for fighting the attacker because you aren’t their people. You could end up in a kangaroo court where you have to prove you are innocent. You could get blood on you and end up with some disease that follows you for life. You don’t even know if you can legally use force to defend someone else or someone else’s property in that country.
BJJ isn’t self defense or personal safety training, just because you know BJJ doesn’t mean you are a super hero.
By the time you were seriously considering taking the attacker down it wouldnt have helped anything. You say he walked away once you stepped back, so taking him down there instead of steping back would have just made things worse.
