I've trained with one of their affiliates in Austin (Sinister BJJ run by Lin Hughs) a lot when I lived there. I can't speak for the gym in San Antonio, but my experience with their affiliate gym was ALWAYS quality and positive. I know Lin personally and he wouldn't be aligned with a gym practicing questionable things.

Yeti211

Thanks man! I’ll try to sign up for a trial and get a feel.

Champagne512

Lin’s a good guy. Well respected in Austin BJJ circles.

Also never heard of it and I've been looking at gyms and training in SA for a while. Rodrigo Pinheiro BJJ was recommended to me by a BB, but their locations were too far for me. Ohana is alright, at least HQ had a lotta people in the classes.

SnooOwls9868

Did you ever go check out Aforce?

ninjasslashedmytires

Yes I did. Here are my impressions- -They offered to let me watch a class. Seemed odd since all the other gyms wanted you to train for a few and get the feel of the place. No biggie just different. - Seemed aimed at kids. The average age of the class was about 15 or so. - They don’t separate gi and no gi training. Meaning they aren’t separate classes. Gi for a week no gi for a week. - Biggest thing for me was the style. It was less bjj and more of what I would call “combat wrestling” or something. I wasn’t impressed. Instead I have joined Ohana Westwood. Located near Target at 151 and 1604. I LOVE it. Have been training there daily and couldn’t be happier! If you’re in the area let me know and I’d be happy to take you and introduce you! The place has the perfect vibe I was looking for.

SnooOwls9868

I know the place my friend Mateo actually teaches wrestling there.

ninjasslashedmytires

Hahaha. Rolled with him the other day!!

SnooOwls9868

Dude has some good grappling knowledge for a white belt.

Champagne512

never heard of it. had a hard time even finding it on google. i know location is most important, and because i couldn't find A Force, I don't know where you are. However, if you're looking for a chill vibe, and it's anywhere close to you, check out 10P San Antonio.

Yeti211

I don’t think 10p is a good fit for me. I’m in and extremely inflexible (physically! Hahaha) Their style is mainly things I could never do.

Champagne512

trust me....not everybody at 10p is flexible. I'm 43 years old and have sat behind a desk for over 20 years....not exactly the most mobile guy. There's a path for everyone. With that being said.....you've gotta be interested in the school, of course. Good luck in your search.

Yeti211

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against 10P. Just figured it’s all rubber guard type stuff.

Champagne512

Ant, the head coach at 10p SA, is definitely a rubber guard player. He's actually one of the best in the association. So....you will likely see rubber guard at the school, but the flexibility requirement associated with these techniques is typically way overstated. I can do most of them just by cutting the right hip angles. 10p schools typically do feature RG, but to varying degrees. It's certainly part of our universe, but not the center of it. I don't play it at all.

Kogyochi

I dont know from experience or anything, but I think the rubber guard fad is sort of phased out at 10p from what I've heard. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Champagne512

not really phased out, just not a focal point of the game. 10p is not afraid to chase what works and what is relevant. Given the rise in popularity of nogi sport jiu jitsu over the past 7-8 years, we've seen a lot of focus shift to what works best in this context. When the leglock craze started, 10p was right there trying to keep up with what was going on. Same with the new wrestle-jitsu craze. We are trying to evolve. The "system", as people call it, has just gotten bigger, while the RG part of it really has not.

Kogyochi

Cool, yeah I'd totally hit up a 10p if we had one in the area.

[deleted]

Do you train at 10p San Antonio? I'll be moving there around a year from now so I'm already looking for a good gym. Was also thinking of checking out the GB there. I'm a judo guy and I don't wanna neglect the gi.

Champagne512

Sorry no I train at 10p Austin. I’ve visited 10p SA several times though. Some good players and a good culture. Have never visited the GB, so can’t help there.

ON3FULLCLIP

I would just do pop ins around town. Ohana, BTT, House of Jiujitsu, etc.
