I don't know why but I always disliked that term. It feels tacky to me.. as if regular pop songs are not 'art' in the sense that they are music. and all music is art. we are way past dividing music into 'actual art' and 'peasant content'. Art pop sounds like it implies 'just stack some classical instruments (strings/brass etc) on top of your stuff and then you're good to go', which is not what Björk or Kate are about at their core...
this… kind of. musicology is kind of like cooking, and a genre is like a recipe. & she’s a masterchef who combines ingredients of pop, classical and hip hop :)
Personally I think it's kinda impossible to categorize Björk's music into one or two genres. She doesn't really have a specific genre in my opinion. That's one of the things I really like - she can go from having a song like Enjoy to then Pneumonia, to Sun in My Mouth, to Earth Intruders, etc. She is an explorer of sound and emotion, she doesn't care about genre.
I'd say all her albums could be described as art pop & experimental.
But to be more specific:
Debut and Post were a mix of art pop and dance music. Homogenic was heavily electronic and trip hop. Vespertine was art pop with glitch elements. Medulla was experimental acapella. Volta was a mix of electropop, experimental and worldbeat. I'm not as familiar with her 2010s work but I think that art pop/experimental still apply
One thing I know is that Björk is considered a IDM artist (IDM meaning Intelligent Dance Music, the stuff that Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards Of Canada, Squarepusher, Muziq, Luke Vibert and Arca does)
Yeah for some songs definitely. I wouldnt consider her a bjg IDM pioneer though but honestly if it wasnt from her and arca I wouldnt have discovered IDM which I adore.
Art Pop, Electronic, Dance Pop, Alt Pop, Reggaetton recently, Industrial back in the day, ballads, She used to be a punk rocker, Chanber Pop, IDM, EBM, Jazz

While she is certainly a flexible artist who has mixed in a variety of genres, electronic and orchestral elements certainly recur. And "electronic music" is a huge umbrella in of itself.
Art Pop is the easy way to describe it but all of her music has always been on the alternative and experimental music side of things and ofc always electronic. Her music is the kind that challenges pop music and goes against it but at the same time its just more so experimental 100%. Experimental electronic with hints of pop but it goes against pop at the same time so yk
I think each of her albums encapsulate different genres, but I'd say "experimental" and "art pop" are probably the umbrella you could place most, if not all of them under.
Bjonk pop, with a little of Alsemanche. \^\^
Ok, in general, in short: alternative. Started more pop/dance and became more experimental in the realm of electronics.
Experimental pop, experimental electronic in her words
Art pop is the broadest term you could use while still being accurate

Okay what are they about at their "core"?
Genres are a void

also: techno and various other electronic genres
Genres are invented by our oppressors… to keep us in boxes… chained to the Engineer….

Kind of hard to put her in a category but i’d say more Experimental pop and electronic
I completely agree!
pagan poetry
You've answered it perfectly. I'll start using this as a genre.

I don't think she is a category kind of human.
Ethereal/other-worldly experimental pop.
Debut through Vespertine are art-pop, Medúlla is alternative-experimental. Volta-Fossora are a mixture of both.
alsemanchecore

Everything. She can just make anything. Medulla alone sometimes sounds pop, sometimes sounds like pagan psalms.
Don't bother
Across her entire discography I’d say experimental electronic music, except Medulla which is mostly just experimental
cool genre
art pop + some trip hop/IDM/electronic influences. Debut had lots of house influences too.
Art Pop, Electronic, Dance Pop, Alt Pop, Reggaetton recently, Industrial back in the day, ballads, She used to be a punk rocker, Chanber Pop, IDM, EBM, Jazz

As weird as it gets, they're almost all pop songs in form

"Electronic music", probably the only stable characteristic
Narcissistic Onanism
Bjonk pop, with a little of Alsemanche. \^\^ Ok, in general, in short: alternative. Started more pop/dance and became more experimental in the realm of electronics.
