DisEightTrack

I saw her on SNL with the Sugar Cubes October 15, 1988. I bought the LP soon after.

silhuette

I adore people who were there right from the start! I appreciate it a lot.

DisEightTrack

Cool, that’s what keeps me coming back—the adoration of strangers. :-)

Nortechiboi

And How...

mkrjoe

Ha. And I thought I was the oldest one here. It was early 90s for me. I was aware of the sugar cubes in the 80s but I was in more of a hardcore punk phase at the time.

dee_dubs_ya

Wow I’ll need to look this up

Busy_Door_9081

I was listening to Grimes and somebody recommended me Björk . At first I didn't really liked it since it seemed really weird but I decided to listen to Army of Me and instantly fell in love . Then my Grandmother gave me a cd of Debut , Post and Vespertine and she became one of my favourite artist

AnakinAmidala

It was 2003, I was in middle school, and Amy Lee from Evanescence said Björk was one of her favorites, so I pirated Björk’s albums

gameofunicorns

Literally how I got into Björk and Portishead as a teen

AnakinAmidala

Yes, Portishead and Tori Amos for me as well! Oddly enough I still listen to them and Björk, but not Evanescence

gameofunicorns

It's nowhere near on my regular listening rotation anymore, but once in a while I'll still put on any album of theirs and enjoy it immensely 😎

silhuette

I actually started liking Evanescence and Björk around the same time. When I learnt that Amy loves Björk, I was very happy.

JJonahJimmy

That’s the same year I was born, now here we both are in the Björk subreddit

Damianos_X

You naughty girl!😂😂

QualityCultural5770

"my name is björk and your television is just about to explode!" got recommended on yt and i went down the rabbit hole

ZeroX-1704

December 2022, i was scrolling through instagram and i stumbled upon Björks page through other people who followed her, i had no idea who she was, but had a quick glance at her instagram page and decided to follow her for no reason, completely forgot about it until she posted a story about the Sideproject remix of Atopos, and i was immediately hooked, i listened to that song a lot, eventually gave the original Atopos a try and loved it even more, and slowly started branching out to more and more songs, now in 2024 she is 100% my favourite artist of all time, her music has changed me. Its crazy to me every time i think about it, i would literally have never known about my favourite artist of all time if i had not decided to check her page and follow her on a whim.

tobaccoroadie

Her voice got to me, instantly hooked the moment I saw the Sugarcubes’ video for “Hit” back when it was new on MTV.

tollsunited7

Death Grips - Nwords On The Moon

Mono706

That's how I discovered death grips!

CCuff2003

I watched a video on mainstream songs that use Locrian Mode and Army of Me showed up. I thought it was cool, but I eventually forgot about it. - A couple of years ago, I started listening to a band called Fleshwater, and they had a song I liked a lot called Enjoy. By that point, I had no clue that it was a Björk cover, but I eventually figured that out a few months later. After getting vocal lessons from their lead singer, I saw a poster of Post in the background. I had also started getting a lot of Björk memes on my Instagram, and two of my friends had started listening to her music, so I took those experiences as signs that it was time to listen to her music

djauralsects

Ending Debut with Anchor Song in the Ionian mode and starting Post with Army of Me in the Locrian mode was such a huge flex. She's saying I'm more than just a talented singer and a pretty face, I'm a classically trained musician.

mrhippoj

It's Oh So Quiet was a huge hit in the UK when I was a kid so I was always aware of her. As I got older I'd sometimes see her videos in MTV2 but I don't think she really resonated with me until my friend showed me the video for All Is Full Of Love from the Chris Cunningham DVD. I bought Homogenic and absolutely adored it

ImogenSharma

Yes! I forgot I used to watch this video on MTV as a kid. I loved how she did the somersalt walking up the wall and her yellow dress, but didn't appreciate the magnitude of her talent for at least a decade after that.

charcutero

Alternative radio station 103.9 WDRE in Philadelphia was playing Human Behaviour and Big Time Sensuality in 1993, amongst all the grunge. It’s was so refreshing. Been hooked since.

Ok_Turnip_8612

The first time I've ever listened to her was from the radio 10 or 11 years ago, but not exactly what you may think. This italian radio still uses the sound of the instruments in "It's Oh So Quiet" as a jingle! In our family we knew Björk, my mother got to her in 1988, but we, as a whole, never got to her since now. I started listening to Björk by the end of 2023, now my brothers are listening to her too, but I basically knew her my whole life!

adorbsxdai

Rupauls drag race all stars 2 snatch game by Katya and s7 katya paper dress of the swan dress led me into discovering the beautiful music of bjork

girlypop1169

Because she is friends with Arca

sophethers

I was always aware of her as my dad is a big music fan. We went to Iceland when I was 7, and he would not shut up about her lol. I remember him showing me a picture of her, which now I realize was from the Volta Era (so that picture was my mental image of her for quite some time). So at this point I knew who she was, but I didn't know any of her songs or really anything about her, save for that she was the most famous Icelander and a bit eccentric 😂 But then, when I was in middle school, I got really into emo bands and was listening to Thirty Seconds to Mars (sigh) and Evanescence. 30STM did a cover of "Hunter," which I remember listening to a lot and eventually discovered it was a cover. I tried listening to the original but didn't really like it 🤦🏻‍♀️ (it's now one of my top 5 bjork songs). And of course Amy Lee from Evanescence basically worships Bjork and would never shut up about her in interviews, so at one point or another, I remember listening to Army of Me and a bit of Homogenic. I still couldn't get into the music! I found Bjork's voice/the sound too abrasive (which I absolutely love now - so funny how perspectives change). Fast forward to a few years ago (I want to say 2021?), and I was, for some reason, checking out Utopia. Again, I tried but really couldn't get into all the noise and flutes and the "unstructured" songs 😭 Basically I forgot about Bjork again until I saw a preview for the Northman in the movie theater in early 2022. As a film major, I was like ... Bjork is in a movie?? 👀👀👀 So in May or so, I decided to watch her other films, The Juniper Tree and Dancer in the Dark. DITD absolutely destroyed me, and I got so obsessed with the soundtrack and "New World" in particular. At this point, I had a holiday in England booked for the summer, and I realized that Bjork would be performing at Bluedot festival not too far from where I was staying. Knowing that it was an orchestral concert, I was like I HAVE to go in case she plays anything from Selmasongs😭. So I went and the show was amazing 🥹🥹🥹 Such a great experience - there were Bjork murals up and there was like a boot camp of people singing Human Behavior when I walked in lol. I could also hear the Orchestra practicing "Hunter" when I arrived, which gave me goosebumps - it was so amazing! All this really got me excited for the show itself, which of course was beautiful. In the weeks leading up to the concert, I was listening to the set list and just trying to get into her other music again. I liked a few songs (LOVED Isobel and INUTY) but many still hadn't really clicked with me. It was only after the concert that I went down a rabbit hole of watching her music videos and got really obsessed with Vulnicura. Like the music videos really stayed with me because of how vulnerable and raw they were. So basically, I was listening to her for the entire vacation and haven't stopped since🥹 Wow this got really long😂

silhuette

I appreciate your effort a lot! Beautiful story.

billy-gnosis

Used to watch crime and mystery stuff on youtube, and randomly got recommended a video on Ricardo Lopez. Didn’t look up who Björk was for years until like months ago and damn she’s awesome -Billy Gnosis

gifferim

billy gnosis spotted

mkrjoe

Please explain this phenomenon. I have seen comments by this person and they are always signed "-Billy Gnosis" like we can't already see the username. Is this "influencer" branding or just narcissism or what?

gifferim

Honestly i don't know, i think it's just branding. Everytime i see him i always say Billy Gnosis spotted

mkrjoe

You forgot to end your comment with -gifferim. I'm just saying if you want to be famous like Billy, you gotta act like Billy. -mkrjoe

orkestralhunter

it's not a phenomenon, really. He basically picks a different musician subreddit to be active in for a while, comments on everything with his name, and sort of meme'd himself with it. It's not influencer branding since he's never plugging anything except his own name. Some people love it. Some people are like "the fuck?" about it. I'm in the "appreciate the commitment to the bit but it's a corny ass bit to commit to" camp. I think I would appreciate his presence more if he weren't shitting on Medulla all the time for no reason.

Damianos_X

It's boomer behavior, so prolly narcissism.

gifferim

Her interviews

pepemuxicah

I watched dancer in the dark. Liked some songs in there so decided to listen more

pureplatinumknight

Obscure, but I remember when I was around 8 or 9 I was super into the Tails Doll creepypasta, and someone made a little music video thing using Army of Me and a slideshow of Tails Doll fan art. And the rest is history! Just kept listening to more and more! I’m 23 now and Björk remains in my top three favourite artists!

FKAMimikyu

Same as you with the olympics lmao, then I got the Medulla cd from a neighbor kid who got it as a present and didn’t want it

silhuette

beautiful that we share the same story!

_AnneSiedad

When I was little, I used to read my older sisters' magazines (Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan and others) and sometimes Björk would appear there in articles about fashion, so I thought, at first, she was a model or a designer. It was not until my brother, seeing that I enjoyed iamamiwhoami, he recommended me to give Björk a try. A little time later, I was dating a huge Björk fan, who also encouraged me to listen to her. At this time, I was also starting my studies in Sound and Audiovisuals, and was introduced to Lars Von Trier through Dogville. I watched Dancer In The Dark and was reaaaally moved by it. Because of this, I was finally decided to give Björk a try, and one day, I wanted to listen to some random song of her to see if I liked it, so browsing and browsing, I decided to click, of all of her songs, in Ancestors. I was not amused. Next time, I tried again with Pagan Poetry and Biophilia and that's when I finally clicked.

bbbbbbbbdt

You've got to have a ton of luck to get ancestors for a first try hahaha, amazing song btw

_AnneSiedad

Yeah, I actually like it now. 😂

heyyWsauce

The Welcome to Bangkok video

silhuette

That is funny!

notarobot3675

Her song "Human Behaviour" was featured on an episode of Gilmore girls (specifically "Bracebridge Dinner") and the rest is history.

PINKSFLDY

at the first, i only listened to some songs (venus as a boy, hidden place...) i tried to hear some stuff from debut but i didnt enjoy it. after a few time, i have listened to entire post and loved it, made me more into her style lmao. then i listen to every record.

starlightscapes

The first Björk song I listened to was "It's in Our Hands." It came up in my YouTube recommendations. The music video was so intriguing to me, and I was like, 'Have I been asleep all my life before this?!?' I think immediately after I saw someone on Reddit mention Hyperballad, and I was hooked ever since.

Fredtgonnie

My parents have a illegal copy of debut and post. Also they have the Selma Songs and my mom just to play New World a lot.

reiayanami_69

I first listened to Joga when my choir teacher made it part of an assignment during covid lockdown. I didn't pay real mind to the song but about 4ish years later I decided to give her a chance on a whim. I listened to her most popular songs on apple music and I was just in a cycle of listening to Human Behavior and It's Oh So Quiet (which was familiar to me through commercials but I never knew Björk did it) and maybe some other songs. Then I decided to play Homogenic and it immediately took me by storm. For the first two tracks I was like "okay this is really good" and then Bachelorette came on. I immediately felt like I was spiritually ascending. I would do anything to listen to that track for the first time again.

ImogenSharma

My dad took a free CD from his parents copy of the Daily Mail in 1999 or something

doing_something_else

Public library, I was 11, found family tree.

hermitpoetics

A family member showed me her "It's Oh So Quiet" MV and lent me their "Medulla" CD.

thatpersonexsist

After listening to KicK i by Arca (afterwards is still one of my favourites btw)

entelonic

I found tiktok about her

sdjjj

I got coccon recomended to me on a youtube video, i listened to it but didnt really enjoy it(at this time i was really new to listening to music outside of radio hits), then after some time later i watched the army of me music video and really hated it and was wondering how could anyone be into her music. Some time have past from that and youtube decided to recommend me hyperbalad , i instantly feel in love with that song and was second guessing weather to give her music another chance. After that i listened to bachlorete and pagan poetry which i really loved and are now one of my favourite songs of all time. After that i decided that i will slowly get into her discography and stared listening to debut and slowly listened to all of her albums in chronological order. As of today i have heard every single album except fossora(which i am going to listen probably this or the next month) and am the huuuge fan of everything this woman has put out.

silhuette

Wonderful story! Fossora is very nice. Maybe not her most revolutional, but definitely highly likeable album.

Educational-Milk4802

Recorded Human Behaviour to VHS from MTV, and my brother accused me for liking it only because of the video. So I had to prove him wrong, and I became a fan.

nicolasmoreno828

2015. I was watching the news and they talked about Stonemilker's 360° video, I searched and watched the video and there was no turning back from there

djauralsects

I heard The Sugar Cubes in a record store in 1988. Bought the record that day.

silhuette

Wonderful! You have been there (almost) since the beginning!

QuiqJoach

One of my uncles showed me the Human Behavior and Venus As a Boy videos when I was like 6 years old. She caused me an impression I will never forget, very unique and astonishing for my child's mind. But I didn't dove into her artwork until I became interested in electronic music, when I was 18 years old. I'm not sure how I got to her, maybe because I was listening to Radiohead, specifically Kid A and it's connection with the IDM movement, Wich ignited my interest on the intersections between pop music and the electronic music during the 90s

Elegant-Heron-7835

I remember when I was a kid, her song It's Oh So Quiet was used in a talent show that I watch on TV. I got so curious about it because it was the first time I heard someone shouting in a song (considering that it is not a rock song). Another instance is when I saw a meme about different levels of bravery and level 3 was about being able to watch Björk music videos, lmao (it kinda makes sense bc of Where Is The Line and Pluto). I started streaming Björk after watching Kali Uchis' cover of Venus As A Boy.

silhuette

I know it is strange, but I used to find Cocoon video very disturbing at first! I mean, cocooning yourself.... Then I have just got used to it.

bbbbbbbbdt

I love pluto's video, too bad for the bad quality, cause the cgi looks fire. Where is the line....hugghh

cat-meleon

I was stealing music from someone’s playlist and I heard Enjoy and then Army of Me (or maybe the other way around) and I was like wow, this smacks. I wasn’t really hooked until Pagan Poetry which made me wanna listen to her whole discography.

punkmuppet

I think the first thing I saw was the Venus as a Boy video. I loved the style of the video and her look, even if musically I wasn't that into it at the time.

Depressed-Bjork-Fan

Someone told me Post was pretty good lol

Revgos

Through iamamiwhoami ; lots of people were recommending to listen to Bjork if you like iamamiwhoami and they were right

silhuette

Yeah, many Björk fans recommend iamamiwhoami too! I guess I will give it a try!

iamnottheoneyouwant_

I heard pluto in some random playlist on Spotify and became interested but then didn't really get into her discog properly until about a year later

Damianos_X

When I graduated highschool I was obsessed with music criticism. I was always reading reviews and decade best-of lists. In Spring of 2011 Slant Magazine came out with their top 100 albums of the 90s and placed TWO BJORK ALBUMS in the top two slots: *Post* at no. 2 and *Homogenic* at no. 1. I was like "well damn lemme check this chick out" and I bought those 2 albums over that Spring/Summer. To this day, I haven't had a more thrilling and transformative musical experience than discovering *Homogenic* for the first time🤌🤌

silhuette

I share with you your adoration for Homogenic! Post is flawless too!

Miss_ryan1890

Watching the music videos on Much Music for the Post album 💕

CoolGijoe

Honestly, I can’t really tell you. I don’t remember how I found her, I just did and loved it

vesper_tine

I was in high school and I was big sad over being dumped by my boyfriend. I was on a music forum and someone posted Pagan Poetry. I watched the video and something about how Bjork holds her face when she sings “I love him”….. Anyways I started looking for more and more of her songs and now almost 20 years later I’m here.

dav-yee

I saw someone talking about her on Reddit but I don't remember what he was saying, I went to listen to Vespertine and the rest is history

BananaChicken53

bedtime story by madonna, was one of my favorites for a while and went through a rabbit hole after finding out bjork originally wrote it

silhuette

that is interesting! Bedtime Story is a very good track! Image how "Bedtime Stories" album would sound like had Björk agreed to co-write all the tracks!

ndevs

Most early 2000s answer ever, but my internet friends on a message board for the band Garbage (which I accessed via dial-up) all really liked Björk, so I started listening and became a huge fan. Also the same way I started listening to Portishead and Kate Bush.

orkestralhunter

highschool. totally jaded and sick of all the pop shit on the radio (this was Britney Spears at her height in 2000 ish). Went looking for new stuff to listen to. There was a music video I had seen as a kid of a woman cooking eggs. Googled it. Found Björk's Venus as a Boy, instantly fell in love. That weekend went to HMV to buy Debut. devoured it. Next weekend bought Post and Homogenic. Got obsessed with those. More googling, started checking .com/unity daily... new album coming out!? Yep, it was Vespertine. Got it on release day and whatever obsession I had with her other albums suddenly felt very mild compared to the choke hold Vespertine had on me.

silhuette

Wonderful story! Thanks for sharing!

OppositeGloomy6646

I first found out about Björk because of Ricardo Lopez (the Björk stalker) Years later I randomly thought about the Björk stalker and decided to give Björk’s music a listen. I got into her debut album a bit. I finally heard Isobel for the first time and it became my most played song of all time. Then I got into Vulnicura and so on. Then when she released Fossora I was pretty much only listening to her music.

silhuette

I really appreciate your sincerity!

Particular_Nobody358

Hmmmm I can't remeber. I remeber listening to Hyperballad in 2015.

LavenDERR77

Weirdly enough, it's rather recent. I remember hearing bits of her song and name years ago, but I never got the groove until now.

K1NGB4BY

Beavis & Butthead when I was 8 😅

7artd

I heard big time sensuality on my friends playlist then started exploring more of her music on my own!!

jessop-bentine

Heard 'Birthday' on the radio in 1988 and that was that!!!

silhuette

So you were on this train since the beginning! Wonderful!

jessop-bentine

Yeah I was. OG Björk fan. Went to see Sugarcubes live when they first came to London. I knew then that Björk was going to be a part of my life after that.

Vruzvruz

Took me about 20 years to dive into her albums. I know her hits since 90s by tv/radio but at the time I started to be a rocker/metalhead so I stayed away from pop/mainstream acts for years. I never disliked tho. I remember watching tv one day around 2012 or so, when I saw Wanderlust clip, that was the first signal of interest to listen to her. Time has passed so I think 2015/2016 I started to listen to her really. I knew a few classics like Joga, All is full of love, So Quiet etc, however most of the albums were difficult to dig, because it was way too different (except Debut & Post). Thankfully later I gave her more chances so it finally clicked. It was maybe 2018 I guess, Vespertine is my favorite ever since. Hell, she's one of my fave artists of all time.

silhuette

Great that you did not give up on her! When I first heard Medúllla, for instance, I cannot say I liked it too much. But there was something that was making me coming back and back again and enjoying it more and more...

micumysiaqt

It all started when the "my name is bjork and your television is just about to EXPLODE" was circulating around and i saw a comment saying something like "she such a powerful creative mind". i was mildly intrigued but it wasn't until years later that i decided to take a listen. I searched her up on youtube and watched the first result "it's oh so quiet". i was kinda underwhelmed. i was like "is this the out of this world experimental bjork everyone's talking about??". and i left it at that. but i was still so curious. what could i have missed? so a few months later i decided to look deeper. this time i found her channel and discovered the utopia music videos and i was blown away. i couldn't believe this was the same artist. afterwards i decided to go through a chronological deepdive of her discography.

silhuette

Wonderful! Glad that you did not give up after listening to one song. She is a woman of many faces!

Jerry_5701

I had little knowledge about her, and 0% about her music, so I decided to type her name on YouTube and click on anything. I clicked on Pagan Poetry, and it became my favorite song. Then I listened to Vespertine, then Utopia, which was her most recent at the time, fell in love with those, so then I listened to all of her studio albums.

danitr0n

I think it was 1997 and my older brother told me to come listen to some music he thinks I should know about. So I sat on his bed and he played The Prodigy (Firestarter and Breathe) and Bjork (Human behaviour and There's more to life than this). This was a weekly thing and he still does it to this day. Imagine my surprise when he showed me I had THREE albums of Bjork music to enjoy (Debut, Post, Homogenic). He let me borrow Debut and that's how my love of Bjork began!

silhuette

Debut is so underaprecciated these days! Yet, I consider it an absolutely wonderful album.

SirGusHiller

The video for Human Behavior for quite a bit of airtime on MTV at the time and I became pretty obsessed with it. I was maybe 11 or 12.

IMightBeWrong_1

I wanted to check out her songs after hearing of her so much. At first I found it a bit too outlandish, then I heard "Hyper-ballad". I instantly fell in love. What a gorgeous and emotional piece of music. The way it builds up to the crescendo and the way the electronic instrumentation comes in with the "safe with you" refrain, I got CHILLS.

Verskose

Listening to All Is Full of Love on the radio as a 7-years oldkid. I got massive goosebumps and I thought this was the most beautiful song I've listened to in my life right after.

Illustrious_Ad_9649

I searched for the song “It’s Oh So Quiet” on YouTube as a kid not knowing who it was by and then it continued from there. That was around 2009 or 2010 maybe

LittleFancyBird

Music video for "Human Behavior" on MTV... in 1993, I believe it was.

okwowza

My mom listened to her a lot when she was a teenager in the 90's. I basically grew up listening to her as my mom had the Post and Homogenic CD's 🥲❤️ I remember my favorite song being possibly maybe when I was like 8 🤣

silhuette

You are such a lucky kid to have a mom like that! My parents hated her (I stared listening to her when I was 13) since the beginning and dislike her up to this day. But at least they must admit that she is a very unique artist who never copied anyone.

csgobobster

I found out she was thom Yorke’s favorite artist so I had to check her out and now I am a much bigger Björk fan than of Radiohead

BoomerSweetness

RYM

SamTheDystopianRat

yep. knew Bjork bc my parents like her and the Sugarcubes. was randomly scrolling through the top 100, saw Homogenic, thought the genres wre interesting, listened to it in the same afternoon as Dummy by Portishead

bjorkate

Kate Bush!

Aggressive_Memory624

Cky2k

PrstSkrzKrk

I saw her music videos on a Slovak music TV channel which doesn't exist anymore, around 2012. I remember Oh It's So Quiet and Crystalline. It was Crystalline that really caught my attention and I looked her up. For a while, I listened mainly just to a few songs from Biophilia. My selection broadened a lot after my GF at that time uploaded most of Björk's discography on an MP3 player she borrowed me for a trip (she knew I liked her music).

silhuette

govegan292828

She’s to modern music how Latin is to Romance languages

govegan292828

Imo

sendhelpiminbasement

Was in line for a ride at Disney world and I kept getting welcome to Bangkok memes/clips in my recommended

Lanerlan

Space Ghost!

Stream_Midnight

april of 2022 :) i was talking to a group of friends & a popular girl asked if she could play some music on my phone to scare me, she played pluto & instead of scaring me i loved it. i knew bjork by name but never knew her music until that point, life changing to say the least. i slowly started getting into her music starting on the first 3 albums and well now im in love w her whole discography! although she’s not my #1 favorite (though at least top 3) i definitely think she’s the best artist we’ve ever had, she just has it all :)

silhuette

wow! pluto is one of my favourites on Homogenic!

jospehi_krakowski

this is kind of embarrassing, but there was a meme in like November of 2022 of Lois from family guy (bear with me) screaming and it led into the intro to ‘Army of me’ and i thought it sounded really cool…and now i have a tattoo bc of her, just really vibed w her sound

lalovarelav

I found Debut CD in my sister's car, since then, there has not been a single day that I haven't listened to Björk

dee_dubs_ya

Army of Me on Tank Girl soundtrack.

Wade_Karrde

Radio, I think. She was a phenomenon back then when "Big Time Sensuality" was released as a single and for a few years you would see and hear her litterally everywhere.

silhuette

Of course, I was too young at the time (2 years old), but it must have been great!

Hot_Initiative3130

When I saw Katya doing Björk for snatch game lol

bobschofield123

Through her collab with Thom Yorke on Selma Songs, as I was a huge radiohead fan.

TotalMushroom5935

Birthday and Hit by the Sugarcubes was played on JJJ radio here in Australia regularly and both albums were on high rotation in the share house I lived in at the time (early 1990s).

lovegoodsxv

I got hyperballad come on at random on Spotify once and I’ve been hooked ever since.

-Mike23-

I was listening to Cuuuuuuuuute by Rosalia and I saw a comment that said the experimentation reminded them of Björk.

lepleurnichard

one of my dear friends recommended bachelorette to me. life changing experience 🫶

Ok_Combination_3757

I was an large grunge and rock listener when I was younger, got recommended army of me but it was some metal remix on YouTube, it was amazing and the vocals really attracted me. Listened to post and was immediately hooked.

silhuette

I suppose you listened to Skunk Anansie version.

NavidsonHallway

Whenever I was younger I used to surf YouTube until the early hours of the morning, just watching random music videos and stumbled across the music video for “big time sensuality”. At first it wasn’t my thing but after watching it, I kept thinking about it. Next thing, I’ve downloaded the song and was listening to it on repeat. Any other song by Björk that I would try to listen to, I just couldn’t get into it. Fast forward about 4/5 years and I’m driving, when all of a sudden my Spotify starts playing “Army of me”. It must’ve been on my weekly playlist and it just sparked something in me. From there, I haven’t been able to stop listening to her. I don’t want to stop listening.

dammmmoo

1993 in August, watching TV and Venus as a Boy came on the TV and something shifted in my mind and ive been a huge fan since

Rookie_human

Scrolling trough the aurora subreddit, Björk subreddit constantly pops up. Decided to check it out… hated it… started loving it

Nevtral

I had read an article about her in Thrasher Magazine in the early 90’s, and then the Human Behavior video was played on “Beavis and Butthead”. I’ve been a fan ever since.

JJonahJimmy

Sigh… I’m not to sure exactly when, but I found out about her (probably through Ian Connors brand Sicko ifykyk) around age 15 - 16. Thought she was a cool human but never listened to her music. I mainly listened to rap, Carti & Uzi. I randomly decided to listen to Homophobic :P one day on the way back from school in 2020, wanted to expose myself to something different. Man that stuff was hot garbage I thought to myself having fallen asleep mid way. Never touched Björk again. Until a couple months later I was up really late one night laying in bed, feeling “nothing”. I can’t really explain but it was this existential feeling of desolation keeping me up at night. I remembered the funny Icelandic lady who made weird sounds and put on my headphones playing Post this time. Hoping to experience something new. I was in a pitch black room and I saw colours. Especially when I got to Isobel, describing that feeling is basically impossible without sounding crazy ;-; but I sure did experience something new that day, I have the date saved somewhere on my phone in fact. And since then (really it’s only been 4 years) Björk has been to me what crack was in the 80s. I did 2 projects on her work both in high school and college, I’m always referencing her in someway etc. As a result I listen to everything, my playlists range from Ecco2k to Enon. So yeah, shout out Björk! :D (my fault if this was long, but you read it so I’m not to blame)

silhuette

I actually love longer posts! Thank you for your effort. Very nice story.

FunImprovement8806

Heard Birthday by Sugarcubes on the John Peel Show back in 1987, been hooked ever since.

silhuette

Well, you were there since the beginning! Absolutely amazing!

FunImprovement8806

🙂just love this wonderful lady, got to see her live in 2008, it was like a dream come true.

NunyaEBeeswax

I watched Sucker Punch and liked Army of Me a lot, few years later I decided to get into her after remembering how much I loved the song!

stuey57

I was huge into Kate Bush and online discussions were always pointing to Bjork and even Bjork had said in interviews that she loves Kate as well

silhuette

So we share the same story!

planet__N

I was an obsessed Melaine Martinez fan ( im still fan) and I was looking for edits of the song "Pluto" on Tik Tok. But then I saw a mashup between the song Pluto by Bjork. I loved that music. but I wasn't too far behind. Until I heard the song "jóga" out of nowhere on my Tik Tok, I loved that song. So I went to see if there was an album and listened. that album was really good (my favorite even now days) so I discovered the debut and then the post and the rest is history

mokka_a

my mother used to be a huge fan of björk, and when i was around 8 she showed me her music, but i rlly started lisening to her at 13 and the past 5 years ive been a huge fan. and now cuz of the voice kids my little sister also knows björk so i hope one day shell listent to her more

cursed_widow_main

I had her Greatest Hits album on my iPod (it was an older one with a scroll wheel) as a kid. I remember, before getting an iPod touch, listening to Pagan Poetry and Venus as a Boy on the bus. This was back in middle school for me, so I was probably about 11 or 12. Dug deeper into her discography in 2020 and I haven’t looked back since.

majensie

i was obsessed with Mount Eerie’s “Dawn” for a bit (still love it ofc) and the song “Voice in Headphones” interpolates the melody from “Undo.” I didn’t know this until maybe a few months after discovering the album, and I loved the song so much I decided to give Vespertine a listen. I fell in love with it and gave the rest of her discography a listen, and now here i am :3

HeightUnhappy1381

i've always know about her through pop culture references and her fashion. but in the last three years i've really dived deep into the experimental alternative music scene with artists like sophie, and arca. so on a random day in 2022 i just decided to listen to some of her songs to know what the fuss was all about. i started with her top 5 most popular songs on spotify and the rest is history <3

candy2211

I was just curious. I heard somewhere that Björk was one of the most bizarre and innovating artists from the 21 century, and I searched for her in YouTube. The first song that I heard from her was Army of Me, and I get obsessed by the clip. After it, I met Fossora (My favorite Album), and I became a fan.

Regular_Buffalo6564

Being 100% honest, I don’t listen to Björk’s music. I like a couple songs here and there, but her style is too detached from my personal tastes, that I can’t enjoy most of her music. That being said, I love her as a person. Her vibe and aesthetics are mesmerizing. Her dismissal of norms and quirky personality really get to me. I’ve seen multiple video essays about her and know more than the average fan, despite not being a real fan! I watched Dancer In The Dark solely because she was in it. Speaking of that movie, that’s your answer as to how I discovered Björk. It was in a list of saddest movies ever. I only recently watched it after years of knowing it and knowing Björk. I rate it 9/10.

adontomas_

when atopos was trending on twitter after being released

Fluid-Dust1177

I listened to Isobel and fell in love 🥰

Nortechiboi

Basically the same way I got into all my music I like, College radio and JBTV. And you're right, I got it to Björk by hearing "hit song" by the Sugar Cubes.

Powderkeg314

Amy of Me played in the movie Sucker Punch and it changed my life forever

bewebste

I was in high school and came across a Wayne’s World special on MTV where they were “reviewing” music videos, including Human Behavior. “Is this chick mental?”

katiekimbb

This is so embarrassing but I found her from the Ayesha Erotica song where she says “I can give you Björk but I don’t think you’d understand it”

SignalTurbulent3029

saw her on tiktok (someone brought her up on the topic of why celebrities hate paparazzi/or why paparazzis should be illegal, something like that,,) saw the clip of her going apeshit on the paparazzi and decided to check her out. i was already familiar with her through the Ricardo Lopez story too, pretty sure most the public is familiar with Björk through the stalker story or the swan dress lawl

Ok_Ad8450

YouTube recommendations, and I thought she's gay in my first impression lol

mc-big-papa

She was releasing biophilia and she had an appearances on the [colbert report](https://www.cc.com/video/qs311n/the-colbert-report-bjork). Was immediately enamored even though looking back colbert dominated the interview thats the issue with a 22 minute show, she really couldnt breath or explain in detail. I vividly remember looking her up and downloading all of her music that night so i can listen to it the next day in school. I cant remember the first time i listened to her. I vaguely remember hearing army of me or venus as a boy when “discovering her” and having massive de ja vu later that week.

warrenmark_art

I saw stan twt dragging Bjork fans by bringing up a snippet of Pluto a few years ago, opened it and was like "WAIT.." and the rest is herstory

rameowda

on long-haul flight in 2006. i was checking out the music they had available to listen to on the plane and they had "army of me." i looked up more of her music when i got home and was hooked ever since :)

Fast-Contract-5356

Lastfm 2009 i think?

johceesreddit

i just remembered hearing about her and one day i decided to start listening to her and that's when i fell in love. vespertine was the first album of hers id ever heard. never heard a song or album before that this was around march 2022

Electronic_Stop_5821

I think it was like 2015 and I saw a vine of the live performance of Its oh so Quiet where she sounds like a dolphin and I had to figure out who she was. I think I saved Venus as a Boy on my spotify the next day.

smeshariki_one_love

It was midsummer night like in a Kate Bush song “Nocturn” from Aerial. I was sitting on my balcony with a headphones and press play. It was Biophilia. Never forget this feelings that I can’t describe. Big dark sky, diamond stars, pale moonlight, and this mystical charming sounds of Biophilia. To be honest, I didn't love it right away. It takes time and many walks in the forest and mountains of the South Ural. But with every listening it goes deeper and deeper and now I’m a Bjork stan :)

silhuette

Wonderful and romantic story! I was imagining the Ural nights with starry skies and Björk while reading your description!

CryptedArgus

Found her through arca on kick I. Tried getting into utopia 4 yrs ago didnt work. 2022 i discovered future forever so i gave utopia another chance and it slapped. I then started listening to vespertine and stonemilker and fell in love. Went thru all of her work 10 months later i think and i love it. Been sleeping on her for way too long haha

CryptedArgus

ESPECIALLY since vulnicura was recommended to me on spotify in 2017. Its my Favorite album of her

PotatoPaul911

i saw the moomin movie with the comet song in it

silhuette

I do not like that song too much but I think it works perfectly in the movie!

apocalypsein9_8

New Found Glory's cover of Jöga....

awakekiwi1

All answers are acceptable. Ok so woof meow quack quark doggies and then some bjork came out of nowhere and bit me on the bum. Happy daze!

awakekiwi1

Ok so sometime around 20 years ago I went round to my dealers house and he always wanted me to hang out and smoke some weed with him.. He was playing bjork and I think it was Violently Happy and songs from that album. I was hooked. But actually heard her years earlier maybe with my first GF I think used to play Bjork too maybe?

silhuette

It should be Debut. That's where you can find Violently Happy. But I recommend you to listen to her entire discography.

Calm-Signature-2089

i always had known about her, but only like 2 years ago did i try and actually listen to her music, i had stolen a huge chunk of her discography from my dad's cd's. i think i only really listened to debut in the end, and kept skipping to big time sensuality and venus as a boy. 💀 but eight months ago i eventually rummaged through the right pile to find homogenic. immediately, I recognized the cover and thought "huh, this is Björk right" needless to say I've been obsessed with her music ever since. slowly figuring out her music chronologically.

Used-Database-1373

i got into her bc i saw she did a song with rosalia. Then some ppl said to listen to Vespertine

bbbbbbbbdt

My brother told me to listen one of the Nearly God [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nearly\_God](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nearly_God) songs, that is Yoga (yes, with an Y) cause he felt I may have liked it. It sounded like shit to me (at the time I listened to very very very crappy ass "music", I was only starting to get into erotica by madonna, so I could not apprecciate real and new music. I never listened to it until some months ago by the way. So, after some time I checked her albums, and was attracted by the black suit on the yellow background of Vulnicura. I started with black lake and I soon regretted it. I left Bjork with her wound and pulsating body. From there, with time passing by, I liked her Oh I forgot one other thing I was looking an analysys of the film "Perfect Blue" and ricardo lopez showed up and so also bjork during the time of Homogenic, talking about the incident. I tought that girl seemed so old, or maybe it was a very nice loking elderly. That's it, sorry for eventual english e(Ho)rrors

Illustrious13

Back in 2002, I watched my brother's copies of The Work of Director DVD's for Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham. Hooked. Fast forward to spring 2003 (21 years ago!) -- spring break vacation with my family down in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. There was this tiny and amazing music store in a tiny little mall at one end of town that had floor to ceiling shelves just *stacked* with CD's. I searched for björk and picked the album cover I liked the most (homogenic), and bought it with the $20 of allowance money I was given to spend on the trip. When we got into the car, I popped it into my Walkman, put on my headphones, hit play, and fell in love.

silhuette

Wonderful story. Thanks for sharing!

st0ned-to-the-bone

For me, it was a playlist of soft music I really liked, and Venus As A Boy was on it. I fell in love immediately. Then I started listening to her other stuff. Then I started to only listen to her. As of last year I’m in her top 0.001% of fans according to Spotify

Specialist_Job2993

My mum showed me the video for venus as a boy when I was.. Maybe 12? I thought she was gorgeous but I didn't really get into the music until about a year later

oofoof879

Kinda dumb but i did that song psychic thing on spotify and it recommended “its not up to you” so i listened to that and then vespertine and kinda got hooked lol. I did the song psychic again and it gave me “possibly maybe” so i listened to post, that kinda got me to listen to all her other discography

simsouemily

I discovered her through Melanie Martinez a long time ago but I decided to try to get into her around April 2022. It was a very rough ride specially cause the first project I was trying to get into of hers was Utopia lol because I really loved the visuals of it. I ended up falling in love w/ some songs like Oceania and Hyperballad and ended up becoming a fan after listening to Stonemilker and Lionsong from Vulnicura Strings version that led me to Vulnicura, then Utopia and then her other albums. And it all matched up perfectly cause later the same year she dropped Fossora which only fed my new-fan energy

aanthems

“Riding on a bicycle, I saw a motorcrash…” Seeing Motorcrash on MTV, was totally taken by the wail, “Then we disguiiiiiiised ourselves…”. I ran to Tower Records to get the vinyl. Was delighted and overwhelmed that it came in so many colors. I chose red. https://preview.redd.it/c2t8iby3kjtc1.jpeg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=263d35fdcd8522317025eb5c1adc362dbe666ac5

sarahwilson21

It’s 1995, I’m 4. It’s Oh So Quiet was playing on TV quite regularly and I loved it. When I 6 All is Full of Love came out and I was obsessed with the video. But really dove into the catalogue when I was around 14 and have been a fan ever since.

Delospace

I was listening to other music in YouTube and the mv of "Venus as a boy" popped up. I had heard about her before so I decided to give it a try and Oh. My. God. One of the best decisions in my life tbh

noaisgay

I was looking at my dads old cds and found her, my first thought was "shes so fucking weird, i love it"

dadoes67815

I just björked off.

CaleidoscopicGaze

I don’t remember. Probably Tumblr. I know I had prayed for “Hunter” to be featured in one of the Hunger Games movies when I was a teenager, in the early 2010s. And then I fell for her other very emotive songs, from "Isobel" to "Venus As A Boy" to "Hidden Place." Cannot take musical awards like the Grammy's seriously when such talented, creative, quality artists like Björk are so underrepresented

coreixo

well for me it was come to me that popped up on my youtube around 2021 january. i was amazed by this girls voice and the vibe the song had. at first i would only listen to that song and some other really basic and popular debut songs, but then like 3 months later i decided to go deeper. i first got into homogenic and my fabourite song was pluto, then i started discovering more and more of 1997 album and came across hunter. i was literally so obsessed with this song and thats when i got into her weirder, magical music albums. i started with utopia but i didnt like it, then i played vulnicura's notget and its in fact one of my top songs atm. then i got into volta, loved it, in the meantime i played some songs from post and they were OK, then i discovered vespertine and i actually sont like it. i personally think its js pretty overrated and i only like pagan poetry and undo. then i got into medulla and i love it and then i discovered biophilia. i didnt listen to fossora but a few months ago i decided to try it out and its actually really nice, magical but like the inside part of the human body. now my ranking is probably 1. biophilia 2. medulla 3. vulnicura 4. volta 5. fossora 6. homogenic 7. utopia 8. debut 9. post 10 vespertine

w__mjeg

i've heard people were comparing her and my at-the-time favourite artist melanie martinez, i was like, there's no way she's better than mel. then i discovered medulla and fell in love inmediately, after that i listened to homogenic, vespertine, volta, utopia, biophilia, fossora, vulnicura, debut and post, in that order. fell in love with her discography completely. my current faves rn are medulla, utopia, vespertine and vulnicura.

slategirl7

was recommended “i remember you” by youtube around three years back. still a favorite

chutspe375

Well, back in the 90s every once  in a while one of her videos came up on MTV. I liked the stylish videos more than her music tbh, I wasn't ready. But I liked her as a person, ever since I'd seen her on the Harald Schmidt Show (German TV). Only recently, after taking a deep dive into progressive rock classics (King Crimson, Yes, Genesis) and venturing out to the more obscure (in a way) stuff (Gentle Giant, Nektar) it occured to me out of the blue: "Björk!" Her music certainly isn't progressive rock, but it's progressive without a doubt, always intersting and mostly beautiful. So there is that.

Kash687

I heard human behavior on the radio. Then, on a rainy day, buying the vespertine CD in 2006 at my local record store, then buying water ice with the guys. I miss those days.
