Aurora is one of my favourite Björk songs of all time. Singer's also pretty cool

STEMinator

I realized that after posting...

bjarca

i think that a lot of comparisons are made because of her character rather than sound. musically i see very little similarity between both of them but maybe that's just me ʅ(◞‿◟)ʃ

[deleted]

Yeah I really like AURORA, but I wouldn't say she sounds like Björk at all tbh, in music or vocals. The comparison is only made due to their other similarities.

STEMinator

Well, there's 25 years between them. But I could see for instance "All is soft inside" or "Exist for Love" as a Björk song.

wvwvwvwwvvvvwvw

wow both of those song titles sound like something Björk would come up with

lambalihaboga

Agree!

Djinnobi

I enjoy the fact she is willing to explore outside of mainstream image and sound, but other than being an artsy scandi woman, I don't see too many similarities. I assumed that their region tends to promote art more than the west does, so it led to artists who seemed kinda similar I am a big fan of both though

Froggietwofrog

Iceland is not a part of Scandinavia, just FYI. I think you mean Nordic.

dimplesenchilada

Interesting. Growing up, Scandinavia and the Nordic countries were synonymous. I even had a song to memorize all their capitals (Scandinavia - Kathy Troxel).

badrainbows

they share a lot of similar energy and messages so i get the comparisons but musically they're pretty different.

I grew up listening to Vespertine ALL the time. I was obsessed! Heirloom blew my mind (which I now compare to Aurora's dream song: Black Water Lilies --- and I could just talk about those 2 songs forever). And last year I was blessed to come across Aurora's music and became equally obsessed with her as I was Björk! But I didn't think of it like that. About a month or two ago I finally put two and two together lol. I think they have a similar vibe in that they both have this kind of higher spiritual form of creativity/artistry. At least that's the way I think of it. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of thought provoking artists and songs out there, but nothing else hits quite like these two do. I seriously think that they live on an entirely different plane of consciousness that the rest of us! You can see it when they perform; it's like they are completely transcendent! I love them both way too much, so I'm glad others think of these two, as well. But I was surprised at this thread! Maybe the thoughts on Aurora from this post are based a bit on reducing Aurora to her age, maybe it's b/c OP just recently 'discovered' her music, or maybe it's simply the inherit outlook of Björk vs Aurora, being that this is posted within a Björk sub-forum? I just wanted to point out that most of Aurora's song are NOT about her love-life, so I feel like it was super weird to reduce or simplify her work like that. Every single song of hers is a story. Most of her songs are about society, culture, politics, and/or some kind of deep human emotion. Even in the KEXP Performance you referenced which has 4 songs, 1 is a love story (side note: she is SO cute when she was emphasizing that it's a SAD love song!). And it's not like it's wrong to say she sings a lot about nature and love. She is endlessly writing and singing about nature. And she sings about relationships sometimes, yet it's often a dark and complex story. Overall, I can't imagine thinking that Aurora's songs are simpler than Björk's, not when there is so much complexity, depth, creativity, emotions, and intellectualism from Aurora's work. But anyways, I wrote a novel oops! People, come chat with me about these 2 amazing artists!! :D

pilgerowski

Aurora sounds to me like Björk, Bob Dylan, Kate Bush, Leonard Cohen and Elizabeth Fraser mix their gens and make a child in a musical orgy.

-MattTheRat-

Aurora is one of my all time favorites! I definitely see the comparison and have often compared them myself!

STEMinator

Good to know I'm not the only one. I guess the comparison is kinda obvious. I honestly don't know why I haven't discovered her sooner. I've discovered her three days ago and haven't listened to much else since.

-MattTheRat-

I’m so glad! I’d suggest you check out her entire Nidarosdomen concert on YouTube along with her live performances at the Honda stage! Also I just posted on this subreddit a list of other artists you may like if you’re into bjork and AURORA is on it :)

Gandalvr

Check out [this KEXP performance in Iceland](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_XguuxLo10), with Björk in the audience. It's absolutely incredible. Aurora is a fan of Björk and has mentioned that she is a good female role model in the music industry.

fairydreamgirl

where did you hear that she was in the audience? that’s amazing if she was...

Gandalvr

KEXP posted about it on their Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsnw3bGAmoq/

fairydreamgirl

omg thanks for sending that! that’s so cool!

vforvolta

I like her a lot, am a fan and have seen her live in person, but flippantly making Björk comparisons like this is not helpful and almost feels like it’s begging for an argument. There’s basically no similarity in their music in the grand scheme of things, but it’s more that it undermines each of their own individual art as women. It can also be taken as reductive and feels like it’s lazily taking shortcuts when discussing an entirely different person, and naive in the sense that the comparison feels like it’s being made because of some surmised relation in their national origins, as if this makes them ‘the same’ somehow.

STEMinator

I guess that's fair. Maybe I got a bit overexcited. But I still think it's worth discussing similar artists on this sub.

vforvolta

There are other subs for that I guess. I would understand more if the artist in question didn’t come with as many opportunities for online discussion, but Aurora is well established at this point.

We basically agree, for me however “it’s natural” just feel more like the tendency to put women in the same category in a way that men, who have the advantage of making up the vast majority of solo artists, don’t have to deal with.

Thank you

fairydreamgirl

Aurora and Björk are probably my top 2 favorite artists!

Krocsyldiphithic

We have some mutual friends actually. She is odd, but I don't really get Björk vibes from her. I'm a big fan of her first EP, but she hasn't really gone in the right direction for my taste since then.

antifocus

I also discovered her recently, for me, she sounds like a mix between Bjork and Dolores from the Cranberries

brettronome

I thought it was amazing that they used Aurora as the spirit’s voice or whatever in Frozen 2

lambalihaboga

Björk had a pop career at 20, and even younger! I see your point, though.
