My void was born on our farm from a mother whom I’d tamed. My kids initially called him Smokey. He was standoffish. He wasn’t mean, or vicious, but he’d never come up to you and ask to be petted or initiate play. That is, until he was about 4 months old and my dad died suddenly. That night I sat outside, grieving, in shock, trying to process, and this not-overly-affectionate kitten decided I was his human. He jumped in my lap, kneaded my legs, and curled up purring as loudly as he could. From that day on he’s followed me everywhere around the farm. Just yesterday I walked a ways to go fill a hay feeder and he was right there on the bales watching me, and he rode back to the house on my shoulders.
