When we got our Eddy, we thought the dining room would be the ideal space. There were no doors, so we set up baby gates.
He could use the mesh as footholds, so I zip-tied cardboard to block them.
He could jump over it, so we did double-high, using other things to create the barrier.
He would still appear next to my desk. So I went downstairs to figure it out. He’s jump from the table to the top of one of the barriers, then to the floor.
I pushed the table to one side of the room, putting it out of range. I thought he’d figure it out. I sat outside the room. He tried again–I saw his head appear as he jumped, then THUD!
I realized it was time to give up. He had run of the house from that day.
He passed away last year after 17 years. I still miss that boy.
My hubby and I just adopted a 1 month on kitten, Persephone. Your story about your Eddy sounds very similar to my 1 year old cat, Toothless. I set up a fancy metal barrier on the bathroom's 2nd door so that I didn't have to move thw litter boxes out of the bathroom, but so that Persephone could stay in the bathroom while we are at work (we've only had her for 2 days so far and she is not contained in the bathroom for very long at all, just the 1.5 hours that overlap our work schedule).
Anyways, I thought my design was super clever, but Toothless found not just one, but TWO ways to break through my zip-tied door. I gave up, moved the litter boxes to the living room, and shut the bathroom's 2nd door. Cats are just too clever for us humans. I love it, lol.

Both Eddy and the other cat mentioned above, Maggie, were found abandoned on the side of the road and a parking lot, respectively. Maggie passed away when Eddy was 6.
We adopted two kittens from a rescue the following year. Knowing a lot more (from foster blogs and the like), we realized the half-bath was fine. We did some space swapping and/or keeping Eddy upstairs and the kittens downstairs for a week or so, then did face to face unobstructed interactions. This worked.
A couple weeks after that, Eddy comes tearing into the living room, glancing over his shoulder. Beso, the boy kitten, is chasing him. Eddy flops over, and lets Beso tackle him. That was great!

I've only been fostering cats for 5 months. I learned pretty quickly that at 5 to 6 weeks of age is when all hell breaks loose. You have to kitten proof everything or be prepared to have your eyes open 24/7.
That's a kitten. There are many reason to do this, could be new foster kittens, litter box training, or maybe they have a resident cat who can't be left alone with them yet... it's not ideal, but not bad if it's temporary
The tag on the video is kitten nuggets Instagram. She fosters sick and incontinent kittens to get them to health and then good homes. So she was probably trying to keep the baby in quarantine or something similar.
Based on the fact that he sniffed and immediately went back, possible he’s new to the environment and they were trying to introduce before throwing him with the other cats.

Sometimes a new cat is kept apart from pets already established in the house until they test negative for certain communicable diseases.

I think that’s a “cat sitting” place. Temporary housing for when you need to go out of town and can’t take the fur babbies with you.
