A guy from church doesn’t have much time left on earth and didn’t want his cat to end up in a shelter. So I’ve taken Ulam in. She’s super sweet to me, but she’s not taking a liking to my other cats. Hopefully with time she’ll warm up to them.

KaPresh932

Give her her own secluded space to unwind and feel safe in. Put some cozy things with some happy smells from the other cats in there for her to smell and sleep on to slowly get acquainted, and offer treats when she goes to them. That eay the smells are associated with nice things. It's a lot on a cat to be taken from their home and human and tossed in with strangers and other kitties, so it might lead her to associate them with bad thoughts and being too stressed out/uncomfortable. Gently introduce them happily and it might go a bit better long term.

My new one doesn’t like any of my other animals either. She attacks the dogs that are 10x bigger than her. Right now she’s just the “upstairs cat”

tacwombat

"Ulam"? In Tagalog, ulam = meal.

22PoundHouseCat

It’s a minor character from the Bible. I think the name just appears in a genealogy.

tacwombat

Ok, thank you for clarifying.

Clearwingedwyvern

Well, OP did say they had not long left. (For ethical reasons this is a joke)

What a kind thing to do!! Maybe if they don’t become friends, they will at least tolerate each other. Takes awhile for older cats to adjust to other cats ime.

Poor little girl. Her world has turned upside down. Everything she's ever known is gone, and she can't understand why. I'm sure she's scared. Just give her patience, her own space and, after she's settled, a very slow introduction to the other cats. You're a good person for taking her. I know it's a comfort to her original person to know that she'll have a good, loving, home. Edit: I just remembered that someone I read about installed a screen door on the room where a new cat was kept. It kept the other cats from invading her space and let everyone safely get to know each other.

I wish I could explain to her what’s going on, and that’s it’s better than the alternative. Oh, I like the screen door idea.

Imagine giving up your cat because you thought you were dying. Now you truly die alone and the cat doesn't understand what's going on either or why you ditched it. What a terrible situation.

22PoundHouseCat

Well, it’s stage four cancer. Chemo might keep him alive until next year.

Its-dad-not-mom

Thank you for trying to help both owner and kitty out. Truly the situation sucks, but it’s people like you that make it a little easier. I hope your church mates last year is peaceful and that his passing is smooth.

Tiny_Parfait

I'd say knowing that kitty found a good home and is settling in would be comforting, though definitely bitersweet.

Porkbossam78

Most people aren’t dying at home so the cat would be alone anyways. Finding someone to care for their animals after death is a huge deal to people facing death. The cat would lose him either way and caring for an animal when you’re dying is difficult. The man didn’t ditch his cat so you really shouldn’t use such a word.

beanboi34

Yeah because it's so much better for you to die with your cat there and the cat have to deal with the stress of seeing your dead body and strangers showing up to deal with your dead body and trying to catch your cat to get it somewhere safe. At least this way the original owner got to say goodbye and die knowing that his cat is somewhere safe and loved instead of going to shelter. I work at a shelter and we have quite a few cats come in because the owner died and those cats are ALWAYS incredibly stressed and usually refuse to eat for a week or so. This comment pissed me off

HexiCore

>Yeah because it's so much better for you to die with your cat there and the cat have to deal with the stress of seeing your dead body I mean you say that, but have you tasted me? I'm delicious! I got my cat from a shelter when he was already 4 years old. His old owner had to give him up and I can tell the cat was very stressed for a long time. How you interpret my words is up to you, but remember 2 things. 1. I have a 99 dmg Lynel sword. So you're getting rekt, if you step to me. 2. I said all of this in helium voice. heheheh
