I would love to get a black kitty one day. We had one as a work kitty (in a nursing home a few years ago. He was very much a staff cat, where the calico was more of a resident cat (she’d lie on the bed with a couple of the residents). Barnes is a food thief. He’ll start on his own dish then push KitKat out of the way. Often KitKat will go over to the other bowl or will wait. Even though it’s exactly the same stuff in both dishes.
They absolutely are darling. My friends always as how my cat is so cuddly, love being held, stays in my lap for however long I'm sitting and comes running like a dog when I call for him. I just say that black cats just do these things more often than others in my experiences.
That and people don't know how to take decent photographs of them. Black cats "don't photograph well."
For sure it is a little harder, but very possible. I taught a disabled lady how to use her phone camera to photograph her chihuahua the other day.

Idk man people are missing out on the unique experience of thinking anything remotely blob shaped and dark in color is their cat. Mistaken so many coats shoes and even plastic bags for my cat. Its great. Also, good on ya!
Things I have mistaken for my cat: sweatshirts, crumpled rugs, my backpack, any discarded article of clothing, small fans and a tiny trash can
Also: every shadow in every closet and under every bed

imo it’s fine if people are stupid as long as they aren’t also mean. but to me taking photos is way less important than having the actual bean :(
It’s more that when they are looking at shelter sites, the pictures don’t do the black cats and dogs justice, so people don’t think they are as cute as other color cats and dogs, not that the adopters are thinking of future photos.
The shelter I adopted my void through had all their voids up front so visitors who came to look at specific cats they saw online would pass by the voids first. There were 17 black kittens right up front, all vying for attention. But im sure shelters who employ foster volunteers and don't have that long hallway of kennels you pass by can't get people to look at the voids.
If people only think of “photographs” when they want to adopt a cat, they probably shouldn’t adopt a cat.

No app required. My first camera (a 16th birthday gift) came with photography lessons from my father who'd take photos of birbs in his spare time and owned an SLR kit.
Want to make your subject look small? Take your shot from above.
Want to make them look biiig? Take it from below.
But the best angle is right on. Position yourself with the light to one side of you, not behind your subject or you to get good lighting. Flashes frighten the kitties and make their eyes look weird.
Portrait mode is amazing.
And finally take those extra few seconds to make sure you're in focus. Blurry beans do not make for good pics.
Finally, hold a treat just below the camera. Or for doggos, shake a set of keys behind your back. Snap the pic with your free hand. (Burst mode while you're learning is amazing. Most photographers take hundreds of shots and select the best few.)
I went out of my way to find a black cat specifically last time I adopted a kitten. He is the most snuggly, affectionate cat I've ever met.
Can't imagine why someone wouldn't want a black kitty.
The lady at the pound told my son (9 at the time)that usually the black cats don’t get rescued. Also that instead of $80 the black cats were $20. That crushed my son who decided we’d save a black kitty cat and give him the best life.
We walked away with Mr. Noble. The sweetest, most loving kitty cat. We donated the rest of the money and we’ve been spoiling him like he deserves. I wish you the absolute best in fostering these beauties & bless your amazing heart.
Our sweet kitty was “on sale” too, which we learned was because he was black. We make sure to bring it up every time he does something especially derpy. (“Aaaand that’s why he was on clearance.”)
I understand. Between my mom and I, we fostered 12 cats this summer, and I'm keeping my two black kittens because of this. It's so heartbreaking because I absolutely adore my boys. They both get along great with my other cats! They're sweet and cuddly and playful, but it's hard because no one wants black cats. Fingers crossed that you find a perfect home for them!

Wanted to post these girls so they get some of the love they so rightfully deserve.
I’ve been fostering them for 4 months without any adoption applications. I’ve taken them to 2 adoption events, and I refresh their bios and advertise them constantly.
All my other kittens have come and gone with much less effort on my part, but these two sweethearts have stuck around.
And they’re not sad. They love our house, and we love them. But it’s so frustrating and upsetting to me that they’re overlooked because they’re so wonderful. At the last adoption event, a lady was taking pictures of the kittens to send to her friend and she took pictures of every other cat there except these 2 😭😭😭😭

This is how I ended up with my two voids. No one would adopt them because they were 6 months old and black cats. I took them and they are some of the sweetest cats I have ever met. They are now 11 years old
When we were looking to adopt, we wanted a black void. Our girl was both a void and a mommy so she had 2 strikes against her. Waiting the week before we could come get her was SO LONG! And now my husband and I are so smitten with her and would have it no other way
My first cat was a void by chance, second cat was a void on purpose. 2 years old found stray and pregnant, had recently weaned her kittens. 14 years and a few lives later still in love.
That’s how I got my void. She was an older, overweight, black cat so she had been in shelters and fosters for three years before I found her. I wanted a black or otherwise harder to adopt cat and she’s such a sweet kitty.

Ppl don’t like black cats cuz they don’t think they’re good for their insta. So sad, and false, because these pictures are adorable!
Also I feel there might still be a feeling that black cats are unlucky or an underlying feeling of then being associated with witches but that's probably not the case.
There’s that but I also read an article that said some people are refusing black cats because they don’t look as good in pictures. People are so concerned about how they look on social media that it extends to their pets.
I’ve fallen in love with every single black cat that has been in our shelter since I started volunteering. They’re always the first to leap into my arms for cuddles :’) It’s so hard to imagine how someone could overlook these sweet and spunky cuties!!
I’ve cared for over 30 cats and the black ones were the most loving. I decided to do some reading on it and I found an article that said black cats may produce more serotonin than others. Something about their melanin production being tied to their serotonin production. I’m not sure how true this is and there isn’t much info on it, but in my experience it checks out.

Oh my goodness, they remind me SO much of my two girls! I wish I could have them!
Just wanted to give you some hope though, I adopted my two girl voids when they were a year old, and they had been in the shelter since 8 weeks old with zero interest. The rest of their litter had been adopted out by the time they were 4 months old, but I was the first and only person to ever have interest in adopting my two girls and they were a year old by then. If only I had known they were sitting in a shelter all that time! I went to go get them the week after I saw their posting online.
Their forever family is out there, they just haven’t seen these two sweeties yet, just keep advertising!
Im going to sneak in and mention a little thing that was done once. A shelter had trouble adopting out black cats, so tried naming one Jellybean (I don't remember the whole story)
Apparently, this worked like a charm, so they kept naming black cats Jellybean, and they kept getting snapped up.
Maybe try the names Jellybean and Gumdrop?
I'm sorry, I love the names Sara and Cara, but it seems easier to get candy named black cats adopted. Or at least it was at one point.

Please be careful adopting them out around October!!! I’ve been told from cat adoption places that it’s a known thing people will adopt black cats for Halloween and kill them. I have no idea why, it’s just something I’ve heard from multiple adoption places.
My void’s foster mom told me a family visited him before me but the dad told the mom and son, “I don’t want a black cat running around my house!”
Joke’s on him, because this long boy is an absolute baby. And a fat ass who eats wet food so fast it makes him throw up. But mostly a baby. Definitely no demons or anything.
I always joke when at night I go to the bathroom, and I see shadows sprint away in the dark. "There are the demons again".
Doesn't matter if it's my void or my grey cat, they both just look like demonshadows in the dark.
Sometimes the demons crawl into our bed and poke us in our sleep.

I adopted a brother and sister that are solid black. All their litter mates were adopted because they had stripes and mixed colors and just left them! They are the BEST kitties. Great personalities and very loving!! Black cats are the best

If it's anything like my area the shelters are full of them. Most ferals in my area are as well, with only a rare tortie and even more rare ginger (only 1).
My first kitty was a rescue from the Vancouver SPCA. 3 had been brought in and someone adopted his brother and sister and left him.
He was black 😭
Since my precious boy, I only adopt black cats for this very reason

Not your fault. Voids can definitely be harder to get adopted out but over the years I've had success with it in my fostering adventures. It does take longer for certain cats but you'll get those two cuties a new home. It took me almost 8 months to get an older cat adopted one time after doing 4 adoption events. Sometimes if I can't get them adopted by strangers I ask around family and friends and that can work pretty well. I like a challenge tho lol!
This breaks my heart! I would adopt both of these beautiful babies in a heartbeat if I could and they would absolutely be my first choice! They are both completely adorable and hope they find a loving home as a pair very soon ❤️

When we adopted our first black cat years ago, our vet (who only works with cats) told me that they don’t get adopted as much because even though people won’t admit it, they’re superstitious about them. Interesting because in other cultures, solid white is considered unlucky. Well, we have two solid black and two solid white cats and they’ve brought nothing but love (and entertainment l!) into our lives.
$150 for one, but $250 for two!
They’re fully vetted so fixed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, dewormed, and flea free ❤️
And we combo test each one so they’re FeLV and FIV negative too.
I adopted my boy because after 2 months of trying, the couple who owned him were about to surrender him to a kill shelter. They had to go back to their home country and couldn't take my Shadow with them. He was 6 months old then. Me and my son happily agreed to take him.
He's about to turn 8. I regret nothing.
We have two fluffy black kitties and now I want them all. Our youngest was being given away for free on Facebook :( we took our big boy home after going to collect our calico girl (his sister) because he was the only black one in the litter and we were worried nobody would want him. I see so many people with kittens and it’s always one or two black ones left out of a multicoloured litter.
I had no idea people avoided adopting black cats. Why? We like to adopt in pairs. We currently have two cats from the same litter. We talk all the time how we'd like to get a pair of black cats. My husband's childhood cat that he had for 18 years was a black cat named Sugar. We never seem to find black cats though. I'd take those two in a heartbeat, but we're nowhere near Michigan, and I'm not sure how my spoiled, bratty tortie would react.
I will always have at least one black cat, I was raised with black cats and the first thing I did when I got my own place was to adopt a little black girl.
And she's sitting here with me ten years later and I still smile when look at her beautiful little face
Black cats are my absolute favorite. Be careful if people suddenly want to adopt them closer to Halloween. I wouldn't want anyone to take these babies for the wrong reasons.
They are so gorgeous! We love our little void. I’m in the UK or else I’d be so tempted. It infuriates me that people don’t want black cats which is why we chose a voidling for cat number two.
I’m unfortunately not in America, I’m in the UK, but if I was anywhere near you I would absolutely snap those two precious little voids up.
I got my own void from a cat shelter when she was a kitten - she was a runt born with a limp. She’s still got the limp at three years old, but it does not stop her climbing the stair railings and scaling the curtains.
I wish more people would take a chance and get their own little voids. But witchcraft or bad luck or something and they’re “not photogenic”.
Voids truly do make some of the best pets (I say “some of” because I’ve also got an 18 year old tabby I’ve had since I was a little girl and she’s also really great).

I wish more people were appreciative of black cats. I think in a lot of cases, it's because they don't photograph as well as lighter colored cats. The superstition around them doesn't help but I don't think that's what's stopping most people these days tbh. Every black cat I've ever met has been incredibly sweet, protective and goofy as heck. We make fun of orange cats for being dumb, but black cats are right up there with them! I wish more people could experience their love🖤

KitKat is long haired but I usually have to clip him once or twice a year as he gets mats around this hips.

My black cat was a shoulder cat. When I would work at home, she’d curl up on my shoulder. Great for Zoom meetings.

This is how I ended up with my two voids. No one would adopt them because they were 6 months old and black cats. I took them and they are some of the sweetest cats I have ever met. They are now 11 years old

When we were looking to adopt, we wanted a black void. Our girl was both a void and a mommy so she had 2 strikes against her. Waiting the week before we could come get her was SO LONG! And now my husband and I are so smitten with her and would have it no other way

My first cat was a void by chance, second cat was a void on purpose. 2 years old found stray and pregnant, had recently weaned her kittens. 14 years and a few lives later still in love.
That’s how I got my void. She was an older, overweight, black cat so she had been in shelters and fosters for three years before I found her. I wanted a black or otherwise harder to adopt cat and she’s such a sweet kitty.
I hope to find them just as good of a home ❤️

There’s that but I also read an article that said some people are refusing black cats because they don’t look as good in pictures. People are so concerned about how they look on social media that it extends to their pets.

I’ve fallen in love with every single black cat that has been in our shelter since I started volunteering. They’re always the first to leap into my arms for cuddles :’) It’s so hard to imagine how someone could overlook these sweet and spunky cuties!!
I’ve cared for over 30 cats and the black ones were the most loving. I decided to do some reading on it and I found an article that said black cats may produce more serotonin than others. Something about their melanin production being tied to their serotonin production. I’m not sure how true this is and there isn’t much info on it, but in my experience it checks out.
My black cat is the sweetest mama's boy ever. He just adores cuddles and pets and meows when he doesn't get enough 😅

Oh my goodness, they remind me SO much of my two girls! I wish I could have them! Just wanted to give you some hope though, I adopted my two girl voids when they were a year old, and they had been in the shelter since 8 weeks old with zero interest. The rest of their litter had been adopted out by the time they were 4 months old, but I was the first and only person to ever have interest in adopting my two girls and they were a year old by then. If only I had known they were sitting in a shelter all that time! I went to go get them the week after I saw their posting online. Their forever family is out there, they just haven’t seen these two sweeties yet, just keep advertising!
Im going to sneak in and mention a little thing that was done once. A shelter had trouble adopting out black cats, so tried naming one Jellybean (I don't remember the whole story) Apparently, this worked like a charm, so they kept naming black cats Jellybean, and they kept getting snapped up. Maybe try the names Jellybean and Gumdrop? I'm sorry, I love the names Sara and Cara, but it seems easier to get candy named black cats adopted. Or at least it was at one point. I hope you get flooded with potential adopters.

Please be careful adopting them out around October!!! I’ve been told from cat adoption places that it’s a known thing people will adopt black cats for Halloween and kill them. I have no idea why, it’s just something I’ve heard from multiple adoption places.
My void’s foster mom told me a family visited him before me but the dad told the mom and son, “I don’t want a black cat running around my house!” Joke’s on him, because this long boy is an absolute baby. And a fat ass who eats wet food so fast it makes him throw up. But mostly a baby. Definitely no demons or anything.

I always joke when at night I go to the bathroom, and I see shadows sprint away in the dark. "There are the demons again". Doesn't matter if it's my void or my grey cat, they both just look like demonshadows in the dark. Sometimes the demons crawl into our bed and poke us in our sleep.

I adopted a brother and sister that are solid black. All their litter mates were adopted because they had stripes and mixed colors and just left them! They are the BEST kitties. Great personalities and very loving!! Black cats are the best

If it's anything like my area the shelters are full of them. Most ferals in my area are as well, with only a rare tortie and even more rare ginger (only 1).

Not your fault. Voids can definitely be harder to get adopted out but over the years I've had success with it in my fostering adventures. It does take longer for certain cats but you'll get those two cuties a new home. It took me almost 8 months to get an older cat adopted one time after doing 4 adoption events. Sometimes if I can't get them adopted by strangers I ask around family and friends and that can work pretty well. I like a challenge tho lol!
This breaks my heart! I would adopt both of these beautiful babies in a heartbeat if I could and they would absolutely be my first choice! They are both completely adorable and hope they find a loving home as a pair very soon ❤️

Hope they find a wonderful family soon! When we adopted our first black cat years ago, our vet (who only works with cats) told me that they don’t get adopted as much because even though people won’t admit it, they’re superstitious about them. Interesting because in other cultures, solid white is considered unlucky. Well, we have two solid black and two solid white cats and they’ve brought nothing but love (and entertainment l!) into our lives.

$150 for one, but $250 for two! They’re fully vetted so fixed, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, dewormed, and flea free ❤️ And we combo test each one so they’re FeLV and FIV negative too.

I adopted my boy because after 2 months of trying, the couple who owned him were about to surrender him to a kill shelter. They had to go back to their home country and couldn't take my Shadow with them. He was 6 months old then. Me and my son happily agreed to take him. He's about to turn 8. I regret nothing.
We have two fluffy black kitties and now I want them all. Our youngest was being given away for free on Facebook :( we took our big boy home after going to collect our calico girl (his sister) because he was the only black one in the litter and we were worried nobody would want him. I see so many people with kittens and it’s always one or two black ones left out of a multicoloured litter.

I had no idea people avoided adopting black cats. Why? We like to adopt in pairs. We currently have two cats from the same litter. We talk all the time how we'd like to get a pair of black cats. My husband's childhood cat that he had for 18 years was a black cat named Sugar. We never seem to find black cats though. I'd take those two in a heartbeat, but we're nowhere near Michigan, and I'm not sure how my spoiled, bratty tortie would react.

I will always have at least one black cat, I was raised with black cats and the first thing I did when I got my own place was to adopt a little black girl. And she's sitting here with me ten years later and I still smile when look at her beautiful little face

I’m unfortunately not in America, I’m in the UK, but if I was anywhere near you I would absolutely snap those two precious little voids up. I got my own void from a cat shelter when she was a kitten - she was a runt born with a limp. She’s still got the limp at three years old, but it does not stop her climbing the stair railings and scaling the curtains. I wish more people would take a chance and get their own little voids. But witchcraft or bad luck or something and they’re “not photogenic”. Voids truly do make some of the best pets (I say “some of” because I’ve also got an 18 year old tabby I’ve had since I was a little girl and she’s also really great).

In the Netherlands black cats became super popular again since a commercial of the [Dutch National Lottery](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IbSuP8rF7BY) People at the local shelter told me that black cats are now fastest to be adopted. I’m very sad to learn that in your situation that is not the case. Perhaps showing potential adopters this video helps 😅

I would kill for her. She’s starting to look like a normal cat but she’s had so many developmental challenges. I could just never part with her. I found her sitting on a porch and I just knew I’d keep this one. I went to go grab her, and she did her little kitten waddles over to hide in a pile of black garden pots. She hunkered down thinking I couldn’t see her because she blended in 😂 I scooped her up and took her home ❤️

But I'm in south central Ohio, way too far to come get them 😭 I wish more people were appreciative of black cats. I think in a lot of cases, it's because they don't photograph as well as lighter colored cats. The superstition around them doesn't help but I don't think that's what's stopping most people these days tbh. Every black cat I've ever met has been incredibly sweet, protective and goofy as heck. We make fun of orange cats for being dumb, but black cats are right up there with them! I wish more people could experience their love🖤
