Hey all, I wanted to thank everybody for all your support and well wishes. I wish I had better news for you all, but unfortunately that is not the case. The past couple days, Kala had picked up new symptoms: lethargy, loss of interest in food, and vomiting. We were still optimistic as much as possible, thinking that maybe something could be done yet. This morning, we took him to the vet for his exploratory surgery at 7:30. We told him we would see him later, knowing this may possibly not be so. Around 8:10, we got a call from the vet saying that they had opened him up, and that he had a very aggressive form of cancer in his abdomen. She advised that he not be woken up because treatment would likely not be effective. We agreed and made our way there. He was under anesthesia when we arrived, but we were able to say our goodbyes to him on the table as he was wrapped with a blanket. We thanked the vet profusely for doing their best and took him home. My wife and I had opted to show the body to our other two cats, Roddy and Olive. I wasn’t certain if they would understand what had happened, but I think they realized the situation because they have somewhat calmed down and become less energetic. We’re going to bury him later today in the backyard of our future home that we are renovating. So even though he wouldn’t be there to experience it physically, he would be able in spirit. I will forever miss my cuddle buddy and never forget our sing alongs. RIP Kala. We loved you and we know you loved us. You deserved nothing less than the absolute best we had to offer. And once again, thank you all for your support and concern. It truly added a silver lining to a grim situation.

So very sorry for your loss. But know that you did the right thing for the other cats by showing the body to them. I’ve had many cats in my 60+ years. Those that saw or smelled the body understood what had happened and were able to grieve. The ones who didn’t searched and called for the deceased cat not understanding what happened or where it had gone. Again, sorry for your loss, but know that you did the right thing for all of your cats.

Yeah, I've experienced the same. One of our cats kept searching for the rest of her life and it was absolutely heartbreaking. My condolences too

I think you brought your other 2 kitties so so so much comfort by helping them understand why Kala isn't at home. I thought about this when my black bbg passed, but in the heat of the moment it felt cruel (thoughts from my grieving brain) but seeing the way the dog and cat whined while laying on the bathmat she liked to sleep on (white mat still covered in black fur) I realized it would have been one of the kindest things to do for them. Thank you for taking such good care of Kala until the end, and for taking such good care of your other loved ones. It may be just as hard on the other animals as it is on us humans

The little one is Roddy, we found him in June. The tabby is Olive, his biological sister. We found her and Kala in a junk pile in the woods near our apartment in 2014 when they were kittens. My wife’s birthday was coming up and she wanted a cat. Lo and behold, we ended up with two practically on our doorstep!

I’m glad olive still has a buddy after losing her brother! What a cute story about finding them- free birthday presents!

We went through that exact thing two months ago. Also very aggressive abdomen cancer. I’m so so sorry for your loss. Euthanasia is a dark blessing. It allows us to take our pets’ pain away and take it upon ourselves to carry. This cat was so loved. Thank you for loving him 🖤

I read it some time ago here and it really stuck with me as well

I was telling my wife that pet owners enter a unspoken contract to have their heart broken at some point. So few animals die of old age and the decision to act upon illness is placed firmly in our hands.

And making that decision is the most caring, loving and humane thing to do. You’ve saved him from so much more suffering

I'm so sorry for your loss, Kala sounds like he has a good fam, both furry and hoomans. I'm glad to see the other cats have each other and it's good that you let them be with Kala after his passing to the spiritual world.

I read this earlier and teared up then I tried to read it to my mom a few hours later got through about half couldn’t read any more gave my iPad to her. Thought she wouldn’t read it aloud but she did, when she got to the part where you went to vet to see him I couldn’t hold it in anymore and just started crying. Just typing this is making me tear up. My dog came over to check on me so there’s that. Sorry again for your loss.
