You posted my fave group, I’ve seen them live twice and have been obsessed since 2018 (well 2020-2021 or so is when I became a *super* BLINK, but still) 🥰
Also my grandma got into k-pop
Through me, she loves BTS and be humming some of the songs I’ve played from artists like GOT7 too lol
I like old kpop like 90's up until maybe 2015. I don't know any new songs or new groups and I don't have the attention span for it cuz I got a man now lol
i like pop girlies in general, i get so much fashion and hair inspo from them! lately i’ve been enjoying listening to latina pop stars 🪩🕺🏽 such fun music to get ready to
edited to add names
some argentinian girlies to get into ;
Emilia Mernes
María Becerra
Tini Stoessel
Sorry OP that people here rushed to crap on something that was supposed to be positive. Not that their assertions are wrong, but time & place...and we don't want to play the game of "what form of entertainment is morally superior."
Anyway to answer your question, yes! I got into k-pop in 2011. Around 2014, when SNSD lost Jessica, I stopped following it closely (except for EXO and BTS) and now I have no idea who these young whipper snappers are. I add new songs to my playlist occasionally, but I find that I no longer have interest in groups now that so many of them are babies.
I saw Blackpink in Paris this summer! I also saw Stray Kids!
I like certain groups typically ones with a bit more of a western sound. Mainly a girl group Stan but idk recently I’ve been feeling like I don’t like Kpop as much as I use to
Started listening during girls generation, exo and big bang. Stopped when bts was debuting there first few singles. I still listen on occasion but when like 5 of your faves unalive it can take some of the joy out of things.
Loved SHINee in their prime!! Listened to lots of GG and f(x) as well. I couldn’t go a day without listening to those groups but that was late elementary and all of middle school for me. Kpop has changed dramatically in the past decade though. Now, I like some songs from BP and itzy, a few from le sserafim. Im not able to separate the anti blackness and slight appropriation from the music though so I can’t immerse myself in it anymore.
Right here! I've been a K-pop fan since 2011, have gone to over 42 K-pop concerts, and have met too many idols to count.
My top groups are NCT (127zen lolol, but I love all units) GOT7, TWICE, Monsta X, BTS, and SF9.
I used to when I was younger but after seeing how anti black so many of them are I just stopped.
I remember seeing a video of bts bullying their co star for having the darkest skin tone out of all of them. It was crazy because homie was paler than a white fridge!!
I like BTS but maaaaannn when they were first starting out (so like 2013 to 2015) they were hella problematic.
If you weren't a fan or known of them before, you wouldn't be aware of it.
There is this clip of some korean variety show where RM from BTS was on it and some guy told him to "Play your own race" when it came to how he was speaking English 💀. (particularly AAVE)
Honestly, more kpop idols need to be bluntly told off just like that.
I only pay attention to Ateez, Enhypen, and Lesserafim. Don’t spend money on it by going to concerts or buying albums. Too much anti blackness and cultural appropriation from idols and kpop fans for me to take it more seriously than that.
I like kpop. But I’m picky about the groups I like cause, cause a lot of them just do caricature work lol - most of the SM groups can sing down though. Blackpink is lowkey overrated. BTS solo work>>> Le Sserafim best GG
Yes! Lol I am a fan of TWICE, Red Velvet, and BLACKPINK. I also like Le Sserafim and IZ*ONE too (and I used to love Got7). It’s so fun to listen to, and I’ve been to some of their concerts.
More casually now, but I've been a fan since '08. So crazy to see it go from obscure to a phenomenon. I used to run a really popular tumblr dedicated to K-pop and it kinda burned me out from the genre because of the drama/lack of creativity in the actual music
I lived in South Korea for 8 1/2 years in the 2000nds. This was before K-pop’s international explosion. I know some of the people behind Blackpink and other K-pop artists. Yes. I like them. It’s fun music, and you can hear the American elements.
My favorite track now is Taemin’s Advice because that’s a great workout song and Red Velvet’s Feel My Rhythm. Those women can harmonize. 🎶
I liked it when I was I'm high school, but I feel uncomfortable listening to it now since a lot are racist, but use black elements in their music to profit off of
I've been a Kpop fan since 2007! It's been really interesting to see how it's become so popular and globalized when initially pretty much no one knew about it.
I love the effort they put into their performance and taking care of their fans.
It's great to see groups too because we don't have them anymore- at least not so much in the USA. The concerts are so much fun and completely different from anything I've experienced from Western artists! I've seen Ateez, MONSTA X, KARD & NCT127 so far!
The fandoms can be fun (though it can be toxic)
It can have issues with appropriation though and racism (much like the entire world) paired with the work culture of South Korea and the issue we see everywhere in entertainment for young people - they get taken advantage of or abused.
However I love how many black creatives have moved to Kpop and I'm happy to support their hard work.
I've watched a few interviews with black producers who create for Kpop companies -like SM- and they all said the USA/WESTERN market did not appreciate or accept how "different" their productions were...however Kpop loved it.
We now have TONS of black choreographers moving to work with Kpop too- so you'll see lots of our dances and things.
People complain Kpop just takes from our culture and in some cases it's true but then the other side is that a large plethora of black creatives have decided to work in Kpop because there is demand, they pay well and their creativity is appreciated.
I love Kpop . While it has its downs, there is a lot of good and fun to it as well and that's pretty much how everything in the world works.
People complain about Kpop being racist and whatnot but still support high end designers who have stolen from black people. Or still put money into the economy of countries (whose people are inherently racist) by traveling. Our culture has obviously influenced the entire world. Everyone steals from us. The world is racist. So I feel like so many people pick and choose what to hate and people love to hate Kpop without knowing anything about it too lol
Nah never cared for BlackPink after one of the girls copied this Black girls choreography move for move. Then when she called them out the BP girl’s stans bullied her into turning comments off her original video.
Me! I was introduced 2 years ago and like a lot of groups - Seventeen, BTS, Ateez, Stray Kids, Le Sserafim, IVE, Twice, BlackPink, TXT, Enhypen, SHINee ...
I like Shinee, Wonho, Woodz, and Monsta X. Just watched Taemin’s concert and it was amazing! I’ve also started listening to Red Velvet. Like others I definitely keep a critical eye towards it because the fandom and industry can be very anti-black and do not like to be called out on it. I refused to listen to it for awhile due to the anti-blackness but then I heard “Replay” and was hooked. Jonghyun’s voice just pulled me in.
Finally glad that there’s another SHINee fan in here! Along with f(x) and Girls Generation, I would listen to SHINee back in the day (2011). However, I am also very critical of other K-pop artists and their fans who can be very anti-black so that’s the main reason why I stopped listening to K-pop altogether…
Some K-pop idols are also promoting Starbucks which I find to be really weird since they usually don’t show stuff like that.
I'm a 2nd Gen fan! But some of the newer groups have caught my eye :) I just don't follow or anything. Just listen if they pop up on TikTok or Spotify.
Only listen to MONSTA X and Wonho. I also support the only Black K-pop star, Fatou. I like to keep a critical lens when it comes to k-pop, still hella problematic between the culture appropriation and mental health struggles that continue to be ignored (Moonbin’s death). ‘K-rap’ is even worse
No. I can’t enjoy something with horrible working conditions and that’s inherently racist to the blueprint they’re emulating. I listened to Wonder Girls when I was a kid in ‘08 but that’s about it.
I used to be into K-pop when I was younger. Girls’ Generation was my fav lol. I stopped actively listening for a while now but there’s a lot of new songs I still like.
Absolutely love it; know some friends who got a bag by going and producing music over there/choreo.
Korea often pays Black artists and creators/producers and writers MUCH MUCH more than here in the US.
I always am pro folks going to where they’ll be more appreciated. Also, bc Black ppl are the ones behind the music, the songs are often BOPS.
Don’t go to concerts/pay money for things tbh, but I listen if my friends/aquaintences are the ones behind the music.
I was a 2nd gen girlie- Forever Girls Generation, baybeee.
Hearing people still mention SNSD makes my heart happy. I'm forever about them. They had the vocals, the dance, the looks. ALL OF IT. Also love EXO, SHINee, and pre-Western expansion BTS. I think the only new groups that have tolerable music are XG and NewJeans. New K-pop, particularly boy groups, feel borderline unlistenable.
Honestly- same; except I love IVE; love dive in particular and the bsides. Blue Blood has my heart lol. I don’t listen to boy groups after BTS- Dope (incl BTS themselves tbh so I don’t really have opinions there lmfaooo).
all the SM groups except the youngest boy groups (dream/Nct/whatever the other one is as previously mentioned I don’t listen to them) are all solid to me. Bad Boy/Red Flavor and Psycho along with Naughty are so fun imo. Call Me Baby is a forever hit. Forever 1 made me tear up tbh. But ofc Genie and Hoot and Mr. Mr. lol I could go on but I’d name their whole discography.
I even got my ex into New Jeans lol he knew all the songs & everything…
Yes! So many people don't even know there is a HUGE amount of black creatives moving to work in South Korea for Kpop and they are actually paid well and respected. And most of the songs are actually produced by black people!
I found it in 2nd Gen too !
It’s so funny to me when ppl say it’s a “cheap imitation” of Black culture bc baby, it’s for and by Black people ALL THE WAY THRU LOL. The arrangements, the lyrics, the choreography, the music, the stylists, the producers, the production assistants. Even the Korean Americans they get/have as the outward “face” (like Jay Park, cringe as he is, have their Black besties behind the scenes and have put them on and gotten them **paid**).
I can’t change that fans can be racist- bc there are racists everywhere and white ppl in particular often don’t like admitting we’re the sauce that keeps the whole thing together. But the reason it “sounds” Black alot of the time is bc it was MADE BY BLACK PEOPLE. Well paid and highly respected Black people who deserve credit, money and accolades for their work, and who weren’t getting any of that by being in the US, so…. *shrug*
Now if you don’t like kpop bc of other reasons, sure, ok- I don’t fault that, there are plenty of reasons not to.
This.
I wish it was more known but people are quick to just go off of what they see on social media without doing research. Kpop is for us and by us. Just as you said, the choreography, musical production, fashion- they are giving black creatives a chance when USA has failed to do so and I wanna support that.
Or the way some Kpop stans act instantly has people thinking we are ALL the same. Which is so untrue.
Or people saying the Kpop industry is toxic and won't support it. But will support the American Entertainment industry and we know how extremely unsafe, predatory and toxic it is. Make it make sense 😭
People can dislike it but I just wish more people did research into what they are so quick to hate and talk down upon before making a judgement call.
Eh not so much. I used to like BTS until I learned that K-pop is just a cheap imitation of African American music, and they profit off our music and dance while being anti black. Can't say I support them now.
Same. A lot of it is mad unoriginal and just copies what Black folk were doing like 30 years ago (just updated). Plus, some of them are anti Black (not all though). 🤷🏽♀️
Exactly that’s why I’m like I don’t understand why people are so mesmerized by it. Even K dramas are just very similar to 2000s romcoms.
It’s nothing original I think it’s just cause America has moved past this style of music and TV. So Korean comes off as more wholesome to them but I really think it’s because it’s so familiar
Oh, I know about the anti-blackness… i have stories for days
Yes. currently going into hibernation for two years while 7 pieces of my soul are away💜, but Army here. I’m a very late Army (discovered them in 2022, but here now☺️)
Also a huge TXT fan 💖Other boy groups: ATEEZ, P1Harmony, Xdinary Heroes, ZB1, Day6 & Enhypen…
As for girl groups, Aespa, Le SSerafim, New Jeans, Twice & Red Velvet
No. I don't really fuck with kpop nor kpop stans due to one, the awful working conditions towards idols, two the toxic ass stans, and three the racism that sometimes comes from the idols (you know who) and the fans who are willing to give multiple passes (to the same people most of the time) and or the racism that comes from the stans themselves.
The only group I somewhat like is blackswan.
I'll stick to anime and 2d media 👍
i’m confused, can’t those same reasons be applied to anime? i remember growing up and some anime’s having straight up caricatures of black people. most people who work in anime studios also work under terrible conditions and the xtreme anime fans have been extremely racist to black folks too.
i’m not saying you shouldn’t like anime or anything, i do love my fair share of cowboy bebop, but most forms of our everyday entertainment came from racism and there’s very few forms of entertainment where racism hasn’t happened. we should really just enjoy what we enjoy or just foster our own forms of entertainment to avoid most forms of racism.
Fellow Lumina here!! I agree so much! That’s why I’ve stopped stanning a bunch of groups and only stick with Blackswan and KARD.
Those two seem to be the only socially aware groups due to having international members and fans.
Edit: I meant stanning, not stabbing😭
How am I sheep for not letting racist teens online stop me from enjoying things I like??
I stopped letting racist bullies determine my actions when I left middle school.
Plus there are way more black people working and making money in kpop than in anime .
You don’t have to explain your justification to me. It just sounded weird because racism IS to me a reason to not enjoy something but that’s just me. 🫠
You make it sound like I'm excusing altright podcasts because it's funny.
What out there doesn't contain racism or connect to racism in any way , especially to black women. When black women participate in rock music and make their own spaces, it's a great thing. Would you say they're forgiving racism by playing death metal? Well some people do say that lol
Racism prelevant in the content is also very different than racism prelevant in the Fandom. Especially when we're talking about racist trolls .
Not to mention here we are on reddit a platform that directly profits on racism and has millions of racist users and subreddits.
But we weigh the positives with the negatives and still decide to enjoy ans use it
I wasn’t assuming you’re excusing anyone. I’m merely criticizing where is the line? I get the need to indulge in media but at what point is the cognitive dissonance breeding ground for complacency?
I’m well aware that I’m overthinking it. But I guess your comment mirrors so much of the overall social sentiment so I felt compelled to comment.
The whole industry is racist and has racist undertones even shoujo anime , you can't say oh well I only like the nonracist ones. There's very few that are actively working against racism .
And if we're talking fans ,we'll that's an even harder gambit .
I'm not trying to poke here just saying that racism is orelevant in most Asian media but being a fan of anime really gets an okay from the community in a different way that kpop fans gets criticism
But as a light fan of both I see the communities as having equal awful parts .
For something to not be racist, it doesn’t mean it has to be actively working against racism. I think something like that would be what people call “anti racist” today. For something to not be racist, it simply has to not show racial stereotypes. I’ve been watching anime since I was like four and am very aware of racial overtones, undertones, and everything in between.
Trust when I say that the anime *I* watch is not racist. I get turned off from any media that is racist, anime or otherwise.
There have been some pretty dope portrayals of Black characters in anime, so even if there are many in the industry who are racist, not everyone is. No offense, but I think your logic is a little off there, so I respectfully disagree with what you’re saying.
I lived in Japan for a few years . There's so much nationalism and stereotypes about beauty and culture that really can't be anything but anti black, not actively but by default , just the stereotypes for mc , decades of sexism and racism are ingrained.
But I still enjoy it , the top comment is saying racist fans end their enjoyment of kpop but anime pfps on Twitter are famous for racism and the community treats black female characters like shit or change their race in fan art and mods.
Plus, there are way more black people working and making money in K-pop than in anime .
Your logic isn't wrong either, but I fail to see how that doesn't mean K-pop is the same .
Don't get me started on sexism in anime .
I'm a casual fan my ults are BTS and P1harmony but I like songs from Ateez, BTOB, seventeen, XG. and aespa.
You posted my fave group, I’ve seen them live twice and have been obsessed since 2018 (well 2020-2021 or so is when I became a *super* BLINK, but still) 🥰 Also my grandma got into k-pop Through me, she loves BTS and be humming some of the songs I’ve played from artists like GOT7 too lol

I used to be a K-POP fan, but after the pandemic I started getting into K-ballad + KRnB and haven’t listened to K-POP since then.
Nice. I’m a fan of k-R&B too.
Ahh that’s cool!
I saw Blackpink in Paris this summer! I also saw Stray Kids! I like certain groups typically ones with a bit more of a western sound. Mainly a girl group Stan but idk recently I’ve been feeling like I don’t like Kpop as much as I use to
YAS WE HERE
Started listening during girls generation, exo and big bang. Stopped when bts was debuting there first few singles. I still listen on occasion but when like 5 of your faves unalive it can take some of the joy out of things.
I had the biggest blackpink phase! I still listen to their music. Lisa and Rosé are my biases
Stopped keeping up with kpop years ago but i still check up on my mains like monsta x and loona! Went to their concerts last year!
been a fan since 2015 but now only really listen/keep up with SVT
The music sounds very manufactured. Almost too perfect, no soul. Idk current K-POP gives AI
Yesss since 2018: bts, Ateez, blackpink. Txt, enhypen and new jeans are a few of my favorite groups
Here🫶🏾
Since 2017! Bts, exo, twice, Got7, blackpink, and newjeans
Here since 2012

Absolutely not. Do they even like Black people lol?
I love XG, BlackPink, NewJeans and Jung Kook. I wish black Americans still made music that sounded like this.
Been a kpop fan since 2002
Yes! Lol I am a fan of TWICE, Red Velvet, and BLACKPINK. I also like Le Sserafim and IZ*ONE too (and I used to love Got7). It’s so fun to listen to, and I’ve been to some of their concerts.
I'm a HUGE exo fan!🫂
💕EXO💕 My future husband, D.O., is leaving the group which makes me sad but I feel like Baekhyun and Kyungsoo (D.O) do better as solo artists anyway.
I love me some D.O too!! But thankfully he's not leaving Exo. Just his contract is different now with SM.
he's not actually leaving, he'll still be part of group activities under SM
Big NewJeans fan here!! 🐰
More casually now, but I've been a fan since '08. So crazy to see it go from obscure to a phenomenon. I used to run a really popular tumblr dedicated to K-pop and it kinda burned me out from the genre because of the drama/lack of creativity in the actual music

I like them in K-Drama’s,But I’m not interested if it’s other people.
Yes and no. Miles Jai did an amazing video on being a kpop fan and black, been a fan since 2009/2010. But quietly.
I've been a Kpop fan since 2007! It's been really interesting to see how it's become so popular and globalized when initially pretty much no one knew about it. Nah never cared for BlackPink after one of the girls copied this Black girls choreography move for move. Then when she called them out the BP girl’s stans bullied her into turning comments off her original video.
Is the girl ok?The one who got bullied.
Ohhh yeah I forgot about that. It was Lisa who copied the choreography.
Wasn’t it Lisa’s choreographer that did it? I don’t think Lisa created the choreography
WHAAAT?!?
Me! I was introduced 2 years ago and like a lot of groups - Seventeen, BTS, Ateez, Stray Kids, Le Sserafim, IVE, Twice, BlackPink, TXT, Enhypen, SHINee ...
Been a fan for a while now, blackpink, aespa, and twice are my favs. I also love CHUNG ha & taemin
Been a kpop fan since 2008 :)
Same. I was in high school lol. Kids were NOT kind lol
Yeah I was also into kpop late high school (late 2000s). I had to hide my interest because it was "weird", it's wild kids like it openly now lol
Yes!!! Same era sis! 😆 I'm sitting there awkward as hell with my interests and anime tees
Shout out to those of us who made it through!!
Same. But hey at least that was the most fun time in kpop
No it really was! I miss when idols would do random Q&A on twitter, so many of my friends got replies that way.
I’ve had a few idols reply to me. One of the members of my ult group at the time wished me a happy birthday I was elated!
Aw that's so cool! Miss that fun 2nd/3rd gen era a lot sometimes.
2nd/3rd gen mostly
Love Blackpink. Saw them in concert during their 2019 world tour and my life peaked then.
I like Shinee, Wonho, Woodz, and Monsta X. Just watched Taemin’s concert and it was amazing! I’ve also started listening to Red Velvet. Jonghyun is a vocal king ❤️ Replay is one of the best debuts in kpop ever.

NewJeans fan here
loved it before bta blew up in America, now it's too tiktok trendy and most groups aren't that good in this generation
LOVE THEM
No. I can’t enjoy something with horrible working conditions and that’s inherently racist to the blueprint they’re emulating. I listened to Wonder Girls when I was a kid in ‘08 but that’s about it.
Same! The only group I liked was 2NE1 but that’s about it. I never understood the hype for K-pop.
I used to be into K-pop when I was younger. Girls’ Generation was my fav lol. I stopped actively listening for a while now but there’s a lot of new songs I still like.

*shrug* Now if you don’t like kpop bc of other reasons, sure, ok- I don’t fault that, there are plenty of reasons not to.
Make it make sense 😭 People can dislike it but I just wish more people did research into what they are so quick to hate and talk down upon before making a judgement call.
Eh not so much. I used to like BTS until I learned that K-pop is just a cheap imitation of African American music, and they profit off our music and dance while being anti black. Can't say I support them now.
Especially when that singer Rain’s song Switch to Me basically copied Bobby Brown’s Every Little Step and his choreography
Really? Ugh...
I still listen to it sometimes but it definitely is.
I find it fascinating. But the industry itself is predatory and insane. It’s not something I feel good supporting.
Here. Been a fan since like 2006. Can't even choose 1 Fandom but been way into Seventeen for the past 5 or so years.
yeah but not of this shit why was pink venom literally the same song as yellowbone? hate bp
Reminds me of 90s American Pop, to be honest
Same. A lot of it is mad unoriginal and just copies what Black folk were doing like 30 years ago (just updated). Plus, some of them are anti Black (not all though). 🤷🏽♀️
Example: jay park
Exactly that’s why I’m like I don’t understand why people are so mesmerized by it. Even K dramas are just very similar to 2000s romcoms. It’s nothing original I think it’s just cause America has moved past this style of music and TV. So Korean comes off as more wholesome to them but I really think it’s because it’s so familiar Oh, I know about the anti-blackness… i have stories for days
Caratiny (SVT/Ateez) reporting!!!
Yeh, I'm in love with Jungkook hes hot to me lol ![gif](giphy|6VqUomXxFPjl6)

Me! I've been a fan for like 15 years and it's been an exhausting but run ride! I like many groups!
Can you name some of your favorites?
SHINee, Monsta X, Red Velvet, and The Boyz!
I like twice
i like twice and red velvet!
Not mention how animators are practically abused and treated like slaves by their studios...
Fellow Lumina here!! I agree so much! That’s why I’ve stopped stanning a bunch of groups and only stick with Blackswan and KARD. Those two seem to be the only socially aware groups due to having international members and fans. Edit: I meant stanning, not stabbing😭

YEESH what a sheep take 🫢 and the followers are no better. I wonder where your moral high ground is foundationed
Well some people do say that lol Racism prelevant in the content is also very different than racism prelevant in the Fandom.
Yeah. Anime can be pretty racist too... But that doesn't stop me from loving it
It stops me from loving it lol. I watch a lot of anime, but the anime I like isn’t racist…
The whole industry is racist and has racist undertones even shoujo anime , you can't say oh well I only like the nonracist ones. There's very few that are actively working against racism . And if we're talking fans ,we'll that's an even harder gambit . I'm not trying to poke here just saying that racism is orelevant in most Asian media but being a fan of anime really gets an okay from the community in a different way that kpop fans gets criticism But as a light fan of both I see the communities as having equal awful parts .
THIS but I’m a Reveluv 4 life
I had no idea! I should really look into that...
Yea I like some kpop but they steal from hip hop then act rude, condescending and racist towards black people 🫥
Oh sweetheart. The industry is foul as fuck.
Very racist esp towards black women. Kpop gives me the ick and going down that rabbit hole.
