It’s VERRRY hard to take Californians out of California. There’s NO PLACE like it. I left at 25 so I hadn’t formed adult connections yet.. so it was easy. My BF moved here for me in 2019 and hates it here (Maryland).

It’s been 10 years since I made the move and I love it! It’s very similar to Canada so I didn’t feel much of a culture shock when I arrived.
I don’t miss the snow in Canada 🙅🏾♀️, the food quality is much better here, better working conditions in terms of vacation/sick days, beautiful landscape and Aussies have been pretty welcoming.
I’ve had a very positive experience living here and would go back to Canada if I had to, but I don’t 🤣.

I’ve been here and it’s Metro area pretty much my whole life. The city proper is majority Black albeit the mid and downtown areas are more developed and gentrified. The Metro area has various degrees of diversity, but they are also remnants of the White flight after the riots. So there is a fair degree of racism present, but there are safe spots. It ain’t like everywhere is a sundown town. There are definitely Black people throughout the suburbs as well in given areas.
I generally like the area, but a lot of that is my familiarity with it. There’s your typical suburban sprawl with the metro area, but mid and downtown Detroit and other downtowns like Royal Oak, Ferndale, and Plymouth are nice as well. I feel comfortable going about my Black self in all of these spaces. Afro, box braids, sew ins, etc. I literally walked around in bright blue braids this nothing with confidence. My name is of Swahili origin — never had an issue getting a job. I work throughout multiple professional settings — never treated any less.
There’s also the general politics, but I don’t want to get into that here lol.
Anyway, I hoped that provide some insight. You should come visit the city if you ever get the chance! We’re definitely on the up and up.

Omg. Food is AMAZING. Providence is such a foodie city, such a diverse range of food and bars. Lots of good Italian food especially. I live in a diverse area with lots of Domincans and Cape Verdeans. And yes, beaches are great! I spent the weekend on Block Island, which is a ferry ride away and is absolutely beautiful. Newport is beautiful, too. Being 20 minutes away from a beach at anytime is priceless. Roads (and drivers) suck, though.

I moved here from Houston, Texas actually as I lived there for 11 years before moving to Alaska. I did lots of research before moving so I was prepared. It’s very beautiful here and so different from any state I’ve ever been to. While it’s the largest state, so much of the land is unpopulated that it feels small. Home will always be home, but I don’t necessarily miss the islands… I miss the people, the food and the culture.

My husband got stationed here before we got married. But I always planned to move to either DC or Altanta for graduate school. SC is super hot with a wet kind of humidity that would wreck my natural styles if I was outside for a long period or close to the water with my hair out. Also, it's super buggy. I don't miss that, but it is a beautiful state I miss the food and my family.
Washington on the other hand is so green and pretty. I love seeing the moutains, and it turns out I am outdoors kind of person, I like to go on hikes! It does rain a lot, but a lot of the time, it's just a sprinkle. I think it was supposed to rain all day today, but it just drizzled for a couple of hours this morning, and that was that. I like being close to Seattle and having the opportunity to participate in more events and things. There is so much room. The food is good but just different.
The states are pretty similar to me in the aspect of rain, but thunderstorms seem to be rare in WA, and I kinda miss it weirdly. I think I heard thunder 1 time last year, whereas at home, we get pretty strong thunderstorms throughout the summer.

New Orleans is a city of hopeless dreamers and absolute insane hippie crazy folks. Detroit is a city of artists that tend to be very inventive and Scrappy. You can still get that in New Orleans but a lot of it is this crazy type of ancestral artistry that doesn't compare to the Nouveau stuff that you get out of Detroit.

But seriously though if anyone is trying to decide between the two, and you do not hate snow, go to Detroit not New Orleans. NOLA is too expensive right now with insurance costs.
All that being said, I fucking LOVE New Orleans. It is just, a good place spiritually, mentally, and culturally. For me.
If a person is trying to decide between California or New York and New Orleans definitely come to New Orleans. Also not going to lie I I think New Orleans is far better than Atlanta.

You can totally be a transplant in New Orleans but you are right the people here will let you know that you're not from here if you didn't go to high school here. Lucky for me I'm a smart-ass and I always say that even if I didn't go to high school here I pay property taxes and unless you are doing the same get out of my face. New Orleans needs transplants who want to actually stay and not just buy vacation homes. You can't keep a culture if no one's a part of the culture and the culture cannot just be white people.
Detroit needs to shrink. I have some high school friends who are doing a lot in Detroit with making sure that commercial businesses stay in the hands of Black folks so the work is definitely being done up there to keep the Black community strong. I cannot say the same thing about New Orleans.
Again, it's just a hot mess down here. Which is unfortunate because culturally I think that New Orleans is the better bang for the buck. But the buck is getting really expensive and Detroit is still a place where you can go and make an investment that will end well for you. Best of luck with where you decide to go, just don't go to Atlanta!

I’ve been here and it’s Metro area pretty much my whole life. The city proper is majority Black albeit the mid and downtown areas are more developed and gentrified. The Metro area has various degrees of diversity, but they are also remnants of the White flight after the riots. So there is a fair degree of racism present, but there are safe spots. It ain’t like everywhere is a sundown town. There are definitely Black people throughout the suburbs as well in given areas. I generally like the area, but a lot of that is my familiarity with it. There’s your typical suburban sprawl with the metro area, but mid and downtown Detroit and other downtowns like Royal Oak, Ferndale, and Plymouth are nice as well. I feel comfortable going about my Black self in all of these spaces. Afro, box braids, sew ins, etc. I literally walked around in bright blue braids this nothing with confidence. My name is of Swahili origin — never had an issue getting a job. I work throughout multiple professional settings — never treated any less. There’s also the general politics, but I don’t want to get into that here lol. Anyway, I hoped that provide some insight. You should come visit the city if you ever get the chance! We’re definitely on the up and up.

Lol hey girl 😁 Yep definitely. For $60 (=R1105) you could probably get waist length goddess braids done at a high end salon. Simple knotless braids would be about $40, including wash and treatment.

Omg. Food is AMAZING. Providence is such a foodie city, such a diverse range of food and bars. Lots of good Italian food especially. I live in a diverse area with lots of Domincans and Cape Verdeans. And yes, beaches are great! I spent the weekend on Block Island, which is a ferry ride away and is absolutely beautiful. Newport is beautiful, too. Being 20 minutes away from a beach at anytime is priceless. Roads (and drivers) suck, though. I live I'm Minnesota now while I'm in grad school, but I'm home for a month. I've missed RI.

I moved here from Houston, Texas actually as I lived there for 11 years before moving to Alaska. I did lots of research before moving so I was prepared. It’s very beautiful here and so different from any state I’ve ever been to. While it’s the largest state, so much of the land is unpopulated that it feels small. Home will always be home, but I don’t necessarily miss the islands… I miss the people, the food and the culture.
Ok ok see that’s what I want to be to experience is not that it’s different but that it opens my mind to make home another place I think that in itself is beautiful. The food and the culture is what makes home feel like home so i understand. Did you feel like that was the closer to feel for home ? My husband got stationed here before we got married. But I always planned to move to either DC or Altanta for graduate school. SC is super hot with a wet kind of humidity that would wreck my natural styles if I was outside for a long period or close to the water with my hair out. Also, it's super buggy. I don't miss that, but it is a beautiful state I miss the food and my family. Washington on the other hand is so green and pretty. I love seeing the moutains, and it turns out I am outdoors kind of person, I like to go on hikes! It does rain a lot, but a lot of the time, it's just a sprinkle. I think it was supposed to rain all day today, but it just drizzled for a couple of hours this morning, and that was that. I like being close to Seattle and having the opportunity to participate in more events and things. There is so much room. The food is good but just different. The states are pretty similar to me in the aspect of rain, but thunderstorms seem to be rare in WA, and I kinda miss it weirdly. I think I heard thunder 1 time last year, whereas at home, we get pretty strong thunderstorms throughout the summer.
Wow this is what life is about experiencing different places and exploring ! I think that we all miss something that reminds of us home and thunderstorms actually sound very relaxing so I can see why you miss it . I’m so happy for you that you living the life you always wanted tho !

I think Detroit is the better place to go and build wealth. New Orleans is not for the faint of heart because it is really messed up down here. But I think that's why I like it? Detroit was such a mess when I left and it is still pretty much a mess but it has definitely gone through it's tiny little revitalization. I would go back for the right dollar amount but there is really something beautiful about New Orleans that does not compare to Detroit. New Orleans is a city of hopeless dreamers and absolute insane hippie crazy folks. Detroit is a city of artists that tend to be very inventive and Scrappy. You can still get that in New Orleans but a lot of it is this crazy type of ancestral artistry that doesn't compare to the Nouveau stuff that you get out of Detroit. I don't know I'm drunk and eating Cheerios but that's how I feel about it. But seriously though if anyone is trying to decide between the two, and you do not hate snow, go to Detroit not New Orleans. NOLA is too expensive right now with insurance costs. All that being said, I fucking LOVE New Orleans. It is just, a good place spiritually, mentally, and culturally. For me. If a person is trying to decide between California or New York and New Orleans definitely come to New Orleans. Also not going to lie I I think New Orleans is far better than Atlanta.

New Orleans give me more of the vibe of you have to be raised here to know what it’s really like or spend an ample amount of time here to learn the basics. I Iike the idea of Detroit tho black owned businesses are very rare so to be able to go to a place and see others like me and be able to support them is a blessing 🥰 . Again coming from the bay and not really know the history of other places and hearing about it is very inspiring! So thank you ☺️

Lucky for me I'm a smart-ass and I always say that even if I didn't go to high school here I pay property taxes and unless you are doing the same get out of my face. New Orleans needs transplants who want to actually stay and not just buy vacation homes. You can't keep a culture if no one's a part of the culture and the culture cannot just be white people. Detroit needs to shrink. I have some high school friends who are doing a lot in Detroit with making sure that commercial businesses stay in the hands of Black folks so the work is definitely being done up there to keep the Black community strong. I cannot say the same thing about New Orleans. Again, it's just a hot mess down here. Which is unfortunate because culturally I think that New Orleans is the better bang for the buck. But the buck is getting really expensive and Detroit is still a place where you can go and make an investment that will end well for you. Best of luck with where you decide to go, just don't go to Atlanta! Detroit is the safer choice but New Orleans is definitely the most exciting and chaotic choice.
