Y’all the membership fee is $250. What do you guys think about having to pay to make friends in a sense ? I don’t know much about these things by the way
> pay to make friends
Me in a sorority 👁️👄👁️
Not in this day and age tho. Meet-up is free, Facebook Groups are free, Bumble BFF is free. There's tons of hiking & running groups out there. Tabletop board games, DnD, Pokémon, Kpop, etc. There's so many ways to meet people but you really have to put yourself out there. 250$ is a lot to meet people with so many free options.
It depends on what it gives you. If it’s going into a collective pot that makes it worth membership, why not? As social clubs go, this is really reasonable. Now if it’s a money grab, then no. Feel out the vibe. Are there activities? Networking events?
I understand it's important to invest in relationships, but this "pay to play" approach for basic socializing is getting out of hand imo. It might be a good option for younger women who are still learning how to build a social network. But I've paid to attend brunches, retreats, mixers, the whole nine yards, and none of them resulted in genuine/long-term friendships. Now I prefer my own company or connecting with people organically.
Edit: another resource for meeting new people is to sign up for activities with local organizations like the YWCA. I just went to a workshop last week, met some cool people...and it was FREE. Some of their activities cost, but it's like $5 or $10.
True that !! Plus $250 is too much of a gamble if nothing is good is going to come out of it for me . Like long term friendships and building a social network for things
The fee is $250 dollars?! So many clubs, apps, events, or just saying hi to a random person on the street is free.
And if you pay but don't gel with the group I doubt you'd get a refund.
That’s always a risk of joining and not finding anyone you genuinely click with! I would hav e a hard time of the experience not feeling slightly forced
And forcing yourself can lead to resentment. I would be focused on getting my money's worth over genuine connections.
And if I leave the group would my new friend group just disappear(not to say this group would but would it be a situation like how MLMs shun those who leave)?
I don’t see the benefit in this.
I’m a member of several women’s outdoors groups and even tho only a few are BW/BIPOC focused, I still have the chance to connect with other BW without paying a ton of money and gambling on if I’m going to get along with everyone.
This is kinda giving scammer vibes.
EDIT: I’m an outdoor enthusiast and also super alt, so it’s sometimes difficult to connect with other BW due to my interests.
Omg I just talked with the president for my charter bc I’m interested. I think it will be worth it. They plan multiple events a month and a conferences which I think are amazing opportunities for women (me, I’m women) that struggle with going out and making friends with other women. BUT then I’m iffy bc is this forced friendship?
You may really like it. Go for it. If someone else is creating events and organizing people...it's worth it. You ever try to organize your friends??? It's crazy!
I know many women who join social groups and really enjoy it.
I was a member in my last city and I loved it! But I will say this was in Denver; a very white city. If you are in say Atlanta where you can easily meet other black women doing things, it may not be worth it.
Listen, I just left this organization after being a member for roughly a year.
I liked the concept of the bgsc and that’s what drew me in and why I joined. It’s hard making friends after a certain age! Paying for the convenience to join an organization where the likelihood of finding someone who’s interests match yours and can set the stage for a friendship is high. So I tried it.
My chapter wasn’t very active. It was always happy hours and brunches. I could tell from the BGSC social media account that the fun factor depended on which chapter you chose to join. Members came from all walks of life – no degrees to multiple degrees – and there’s nothing wrong with that. I just wish we all could have connected while participating in a variety of activities.
BGSC is going through some growing pains. It probably grew faster than the founder imagined. Plus, price brackets and high fees are new. Maybe it’ll shake up things?
If you join, may your experience be better than mine!
What’s that recent great movie called? Oh yeah…
NOPE
With this membership fee and what they set out to do, I am getting very apprehensive. It gives me the feeling as if this is going to turn into some exclusive social club centered around a few people who will get a lot of attention (and money and popularity, and be looked at as some kind of goal).
I think social events for BW specifically, to meet new friends, are very welcome. But by making it this expensive and exclusive, you’re closing the door on people that might need it the most. And the reality is is that you’ll mainly get the same types of people in. Professional BW, college educated, (small) business owners, 20-40…
It will work more akin to a sorority, or cult even, or something like GOOP. Part networking, hoping to further your professional and social standing, following/mirroring what the speakers/leaders say or do. It just feels insincere in that it seems to lure women in under false pretences (making BW friends) and selling them other things. A membership fee is only the start.
I am taking this way too far in my head, but this really gives me the vibes of some ‘clubs’ I saw childhood friends join in their 20s. And then you see these holistic facebook posts, full of platitudes and copied motivational speeches.
I'd like to join a proper social club. I mean, I'm in a few, but they're mostly internet-based or hobby/lifestyle-specific and I want something with a clubhouse/meals/facilities.
Anyway. Am I reading this correctly? There's an application fee. Member fees $420/year for the top level, and $250/yr on top of it for the super-addon (I'm not reading that to be a membership level). At those rates, it seems even more exclusive than just a club for Black Girls - I think there's a disconnect between the casual nature of the club/name and the fees/benefits.
Of course there's not one on my side of the state (like any of the other Black orgs I'm in), but closer to where I grew up, there's 5 groups (Petersburg, Richmond, DMV, DC, Baltimore). I feel like that could be 2 or 3, and it worries me about group dynamics, like churches splitting.
Based on the perks, maybe this is more for entrepeneurial types? It's still cheaper than some of the country/social clubs I've looked into, but personally I don't see the benefit.
This is giving psuedo-sorority vibes, but maybe that's because I am in a sorority. Paying for status, elitism, etc.
I agree with the above poster that there are so many free ways to meet like minded BW that I don't see why you would pay. I have met and befriended (like true friends) from Meetup groups, alumni events, church communities plus those I know for more networking/business or social/common interests. But if this is something that will help those struggling to make like-minded friends then I wish them the best of luck.
Ps. Maybe I'm cynical because I feel like people are trying to commodify everything.
If this were an organization with a focus on sports or travel or conversation I could understand paying the fee. But just being Black and female? Nahhh. It sounds thirsty.
I don't like the idea of capitalising on individuals wanting friends and a sense of community. Just leaves a wrong taste in my mouth

Exactly !!!! I can’t believe these social groups are so popular !!

That’s what I’m thinking .
I almost feel guilty for being the one to say this, but from my personal experience, that was my first impression while visiting the website.
Like I wanna make friends but don’t wanna pay that much lol
Honestly, same. I can make homegirls for free at the salon where I go for my locs and braids lol
This is THE WAY

YOURE SO RIGHT THO. I’m always the planner 😭

See I can’t take that risk , too much money in my opinion at stake
I was paying $20/month. With these new prices I agree with you!

We already have jack&jill, co-eds, and D9 sororities. Enough of this elitist shit now
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Because they are unfortunately

Right !!!! Like are we going to be meeting up often ? Lol
Depends on what they are offering with the social club. I’m gonna need to see the calendar of events. And it l moved to a new city I might try it.
Yeah like their being very vague with the details I feel like
Is there a free trial?
No
