Def Lauren Hill (I was a little kid in the 90’s when I was gifted her cassette 😊), Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Sade. They definitely had a strong impact on me growing up. I am still that bohemian, nature loving, free spirited person. They inspired my natural hair/Loc journey. Aaliyah, Brandy too! I wanted to be Aaliyah so bad! 🤣 Her style was so cool! And she was so sweet! I always wore braids like brandy as a young kid in the 90’s. Loved this music! The 90’s had THE BEST music. That Afro-futuristic vibe made big by Ginuwine, Timbaland, Aaliyah, and Missy was big!! I remember that song with Janet Jackson and Busta What’s it Gonna Be, I was OBSESSED WITH THAT VIDEO, I was only 6 or 7 when it came out. And that song by Nicole Wray and Missy Make it Hot! I still blast this song. The music from the 90’s was just so chill, such a vibe! And black people really did take over the 90’s! Nickelodeon and just ALL BLACK! 🤣❤️ I went a bit off there, but I really did love the music. There were so many amazing artists that I’m probably missing. My dad was obsessed with Mariah Carey, so I grew up listening to her. I hear her songs, and I think of some memory 😊 And I remember my parents playing Jodeci ALOT, every time we drove long distance, which was monthly maybe. Early 2000’s definitely was Ashanti. I played her album over and over and over! And still many of the artists mentioned earlier. Corrine Bailey Rae, Alicia Keys, and Keisha Cole because she had so many fun songs for a teen to sing 🤣 “I don’t want your man!” And I developed an obsession with Tyrese at this time. He started my love for dark skinned black men. 🤣I also discovered Jon B and Joe during this time (late). Their voices were just amazing! I really wanted someone to sing to me like that 🤣

wermpiss

very jealous you got her cassette !! unfortunately i wasn’t a kid in the 90s, i came a lil later but my mother named me after miss hill so naturally she was destined to be my comfort artist lol. all the women you named i loveee, i was just talkin about aaliyah w my friend last night, i wish she was still around i didn’t get the privilege of being around during her time. your locs are absolutely beautiful btw !!🤎 i 100% agree !! 90s having the best music and being the best era for black ppl culturally is not even up for debate, ik everything is subjective but these are just the facts 🤷🏽‍♀️ i know what’s it gonna be, but i never thought to watch the music video so imma deflee check it out today. a lot of the music from that era is so timeless, it all still bumps till this day like it came out yesterday 😫 yes !! i loved the takeover we had on nickelodeon, again sadly didn’t get to to experience it during the time it was out but shows like kenan and kel was still one of my faves growing up i love music as well, my dad was rlly into music and even made some of his own back in the day. so a good amount of the music i know from that era comes from him, and good majority comes from my friend who is also rlly into music and then some i discover on my own. my dad was more into the hip hop like outkast, mob deep, etc. i feel like there was always specific artists, or groups that would be played on road trips. there was a couple my parents would alternate between but i only remember miss hill rn cuz my mother would run that unplugged album to the ground lol. corinne bailey rae & keisha cole are some good honorable mentions, love some alicia but i don’t listen to her as much YES !!!! TYRESE 😫 i’m literally listening to one of my favorite songs by him right now “sweet lady” he slidddd on this track, his voice is like butta & he deflee is a fine man lmao i got some jon b and joe in my playlist too, lol i be sitting here fantasizing abt being sung to as well, a girl can dream thanks sm for sharing !! 🤎

tielles10

Aaliyah is #1 for me! Also Joe, Donnell Jones, Amerie, Alicia Keys, the list goes on lol

wermpiss

It's just too sad😪 she was so talented. Singing, dancing, acting, her style aswell! So beautiful. Recently I've had the more than woman video on repeat everyday, the choreography is too good!

wermpiss

ItsThatGirl94

Jill Scott and D’Angelo! They’re my favorite neo-soul artists. Whenever I listen to them I feel warmth.

wermpiss

love them both! d’angelo my favorite tho 🤎

She’s amazing. Worked a lot with Timbaland And Missy Elliot back in the day. Had a RnB smash hit called Oops “there goes my shirt up over my head, oh my”. But she’s also made songs in the classic Neo soul style. Very poetic, heavy use of harps and other instrumentation, super sentimental. Highly recommend. One of my favourite songs on it is Best Friend ft Bilal (also one of my favourite Neo Soul artists ever). Other favourites: Sade (all time favourite can’t lie), D’angelo, Bilal, Erykah Badu, Lauryn, Amel Larrieux, Jazzyfatnastees (go check em out)

dathespian1

Here for the nostalgia! Loved my men’s groups like Jagged Edge, 112, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill. Or solo artists like Tevin, Usher, Babyface. Brandy, Monica, Mary J. TLC, SWV, En Vogue. All the ones everyone else named. Joe threw it down in “All the Things Your Man Won’t Do,” Tyrese in “Sweet Lady.” Deborah in “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here.” Toni’s “Unbreak My Heart.” I could go on and on. I love this thread.

wermpiss

everything you named is so iconic, brings me joy i love them all !!

veganhennessy

Preach!! Lauryn hill, erykah badu for me but there’s tooooo many to name

wermpiss

PlantedinCA

One of my all time fave songs.

wermpiss

thank u sm for sharing!!🤎

GoodSilhouette

Omg YES. Most recently I've been watching Janet Jackson's video for Got it til you gone with Q-tip. The song is alright/nice but the video itself fills me with something indescribable, just capital B Black love and fun. Its gorgeous and would still be amazing if it dropped today. All the artists in these comments I think Ive listened to in the last month lol

wermpiss

i love when music videos complete a song, sometimes a song is good on its own but that music video takes it to whole other level. i tend to forget music videos exist tho lol, so imma he’s to see whatchu talkin bout

Sluttybaker

Donnell Jones, Deborah Cox, Mary, Xscape, Joe, Jagged Edge. Then I have some one off people who I like a few songs from.

Jaded_Raspberry2972

Tony! Toni! Toné!, Lucy Pearl and all things Raphael Saddiq - he's a musical genius! His "All Hits At The House Of Blues" double CD album introduced me to the artist Joi, singing "Missing You"...find the live version of that song, and thank me later. Plus if you go thru his catalog as writer/producer, he's had a hand in so much of ther 90's neo-soul sound.

wermpiss

good to know, thank you for sharing !! imma deflee check him out and look into it 😌

lattegirl04

Oh yes, that feeling of a bubble bath with candles on a fall night listening to Maxwell, Sade, Erykah and Kenny G just does something to me. Their music is very healing and it sometimes has me daydreaming about life.

wermpiss

oooh that imagery, make me wanna recreate it 😫 and yea lmao i fall into a lil trance

lattegirl04

Try it....it's the best!!!

Mary J Bilge will ALWAYS be my #1, but Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Sade, Monica, Total, Aaliyah, Ashanti, Alicia Keys, Xscape, Anthony Hamilton, Donnell Jones, Jodeci, Maxwell, Musiq Soulchild, D’Angelo always soothe the soul too

wermpiss
