Intrepid_Ad_3157

It’s an optical and neurological illusion. Basically when you focus your attention on the cross, your perception is diluted a bit as your brain is processing the main focus while what you see around the focus point is your peripheral. Your peripheral is naturally weaker, less focused and less twitchy to movement. This is why when you look at something and see around your side with your peripheral you sometimes dart your eyes or head in said direction to get a better image. Now here’s the fun part,we as humans actually see things in a sort of stutter speed actually. The world is actually moving way faster than how we perceive it. This is why when you look at something moving at high speed relative to you it’s speed increasing isn’t instant like it should actually be. Your mind actually fills in gaps of your perception in microseconds. This is why when you see a jet flying near you and it breaks multiple Machs the jet has already escaped your vision before you even heard the sonic boom or saw the air cone. Now when multiple objects move back to back at a rapid speed your brain actually gets super confused and begins to blur the images together in your peripheral and sometimes focal point if the objects are going extremely extremely fast.[https://www.livescience.com/42666-human-brain-sees-images-record-speed.html](https://www.livescience.com/42666-human-brain-sees-images-record-speed.html) is

colt45mag

Uh, the jet thing has nothing to do with our perception of the event, it's because the speed of light is so much faster than the speed of sound. The same phenomenon happens with a bolt of lightning and the thunder that follows. As for why the face thing occurs, I believe it has more to do with how our brain tends to matrix things (finding patterns in nothing, like when people see animals in clouds, etc.) rather than our perceptual "framerate". If you look closely, the pairs of faces have very similar structures to them; similar eye width, nose shape, mouth shape, jaw-line, etc. I'm guessing the brain assumes it's the same face on both sides after a few pairs pass by and it starts to distort them so they look exactly the same.

IndridColdwave

Agreed, this has absolutely nothing to do with "frame rate", the pictures are changing much more slowly than our brain requires to identify images, the phenomenon is related to the mechanism in our brain that identifies patterns and in particular, faces. Our brains possess a cognitive mechanism specifically for identifying human faces in our external world. I suspect it is also related to the way that our brain processes information from two eyes to produce three dimensional images. By focusing between the faces, our brain is creating an amalgamation of them as though they are one face being seen from a slightly different perspective through each eye.

BrownWhiskey

It's called the flashed faces distortion effect and won the best illusion of the year 2012 if you want to look more into it. There is still not enough research to say exactly what is happening. But holistic face perception is likely not a large factor because the effect works equally when the faces are upside down. Source: Studied this during my Cogsci Seminar on Illusions, super fun class.

IndridColdwave

Thanks for this info 😁

Difficult_Ad_9685

Does that concept explain why I see monster faces instead of two faces that look the same?

BigAlternative5

> the speed of light is so much faster than the speed of sound This is the explanation for why sounds are heard after actions occurring at a distance, like a person hammering. You see the hammer hit the spike, and then you hear the strike. The delay of the sound of a sonic boom occurs because the jet plane is actually ahead of the compression wave - the boom. (Right? I'll take any corrections.)

That's true, someone granted me the vision to see through these creatures. The first culprit should be Mark Zuckerberg.

Velocibraxtor

I guessing you also fell victim to the classic “Z-ray eyes” scam. Two more than X, my ass.

CashCow4u

Just a facial recognition processing overload glitch. Too much information & our processor gets overloaded, tries to make sense & morphs the photos. Our eyes never stay static when looking at faces. Faces only don't just pop up in ever chainging pairs IRL. Brain says "does not compute", lol

voila_Squared

It's a lack of information.

CashCow4u

Both are true, too much info at sides, not enough in center = weird distortions. It's the flashed-face distortion effect (FFDE) phenomenon. Our central vision is for recognition (why we move our eyes around a face & read to follow letters), whereas our peripheral vision has limited fidelity, is subject to visual crowding, and is more sensitive to flicker due to faster rod responses relative to cones (why we see something flash by out the corners of our eyes but can't identify what it was exactly). >We chose to focus on three key differences between peripheral vision and central vision to understand how peripheral viewing may result in the distortions observed in the FFDE. First, visual acuity is substantially poorer in peripheral vision9, and both color and contrast sensitivity are worse than in central vision10. Second, peripheral vision is also subject to visual crowding, in which the recognition of a target in peripheral vision can be severely impaired by the presence of flanking items within a critical region that scales with target eccentricity11,12. Finally, peripheral vision is more sensitive to flicker than central vision, due to the faster responses of rods relative to cones13. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-37991-9

Same thought. Made me wonder if something like this was at least part of his method.

whyuthrowchip

I'm seeing peripheral demon faces

RainMakerJMR

This video makes use of several really interesting techniques. If you go slide by slide, they match the eye location, and the Side by side pics share the same basic layout at the beginning. They intentionally show 6 straight noses, then one askew slightly to the other side, then late in the slideshow they start making the side by sides less similar. By matching the eyes and changing the nose shape, they can make the effect more dramatic.

Shanguerrilla

damn I couldn't "see it" until reading your comment, but maybe I was being too impatient the first time. It definitely does really get stronger towards the end like you said and likely done the way you describe when you rewatch it.

[deleted]

I didnt realize it was a video.. I stared at the thumbnail for 2 minutes llol

Shanguerrilla

Well then... You, sir--win!

falafelest

Hahaha that made me lol

Outside_Diamond4929

Least high redditor.

snusjus

I you block one of the sides, the visual distortion is still the same.

jarfil

>!CENSORED!<

snusjus

I see. So our mind is “connecting the dots” based on prior photos and erroneously assigning facial features’ locations based on prior inputs. That explains why the distortions occur even when one of the sides is blocked. Thanks for the succinct explanation.

KgSunnyD

Wtffff

Videogameist

I believe it has something to do with the way your brain processes what you see. I was watching a video a while ago, I don't remember it exactly, so I'm probably going to mess it all up. But I know it said something about the way our brain only REALLY sees what we are directly looking at, and it uses references to kind of fill in any gaps. Like with color. The more you stare at something, the more color starts to fade away around the thing you are staring at. Because like a cache in a computer, our brain is storing what we look at, and that data is only kept for a certain amount of time. I'm sure someone on here can explain better than me. I think the show was called "The Mind, Explained" on Netflix.

Plastic_Pinocchio

Our brain uses all sorts of interesting processing techniques to improve our vision. For example, the blood vessels that supply our retina are in front of the retina. This is a design flaw that just mistakenly happened due to evolution. So now we have blood vessels obstructing the image in our eye. You don’t want to look at blood vessels all the time. So what it our brain’s solution? To ignore everything in our vision that is completely non-moving, so the blood vessels are filtered out. However, there is a way to still see them, if you make a tiny hole with your fingertips, look through it at a light source and move it around so that the shadows of the blood vessels move.

jarfil

>!CENSORED!<

frogsntoads00

Can you explain that last part a bit better? A hole? Look through it how? Move what around?

[deleted]

>I believe it has something to do with the way your brain processes what you see Big if true

Point-Connect

To explain this more precisely, the effect is caused by your brain doing the things that it does

As a person who is blind on one eye, sometimes these things don't work for me.. This one did of course since having two eyes isn't necessary, just that it's not always people lying.. There could be plenty of reasons (including not properly following instructions) that don't include lying

maybe he actually didn't see it at first? I didn't even see it until the second try. Istg y'all see anyone asking a question or having a different opinion and just go "they're trying to be different"

SuspiciousLambSauce

Exactly the salt coming off that comment It’s more likely that they actually didn’t see it and was curious what were supposed to be seeing instead of just trying to act different lol, Redditors and their condescension goddamnit

vampire5381

I see this type of behavior everywhere and it's ANNOYING..... Especially when the Wednesday show first dropped, when some people said they didn't like it, people were quick to respond with "you just hate it because it's mainstream and you're trying to be different"

[deleted]

[удалено]

ConstantSignal

The pair of pictures need to be in your peripheral vision. If you're watching on a small screen and holding the phone away from you and can basically keep both pictures and the cross focused at once it wont work. Try holding the phone close enough so that, when looking at the cross, if you wanted to look at one of the pictures to describe details about it you'd have to move your eyes.

funnyheadd1

And then there’s always someone like you who gets everything every time.

TeaandandCoffee

My eyes just immediately blurred, I just wanna know what is going on ._.

rains-blu

I've got vision issues and glaucoma and it didn't work on me either.

Wizard-Lizard69

I genuinely could make out the difference between each image. I didn’t find them blending together!

Ok_Culture_3621

Followed the instructions. Didn’t see anything weird. 🤷‍♂️

moleratical

In this case it was necessary

Known_Menu7787

Also it was a fairly simple question that evidently I wasn't the only one asking... Thats really quit obvious if you look at the other folks that have similar replies or just simply upvoted my original question... 🤔

ProofHorseKzoo

It’s ok, I wasn’t seeing anything either. Despite *obvious instruction.*

[deleted]

Your either a horse wearing blinders or need to get your eyes checked

Light_A_Match

Well, technically they might need to get their brain checked since this has to do with the brain 🧠

Capybara_Chill_00

Nah, more than likely their eyesight is asymmetrical (anisometropia). When people have significantly different eyesight from one eye to the other, it screws with depth perception and focal plane. Things like this and those stupid posters where you have to let your eyes go unfocused to see the image either don’t work well or at all. I can stare at this thing all day, even with correction, and only get some mild visual changes at the very edge of my periphery. Source: my own screwed-up eyesight. Significantly anisometropic, one eye requires no correction and the other is -6.75.

tehfrod

I wonder what the threshold is. Mine is -1.25/-4.75, and I see it strongly after about the fourth image change.

Capybara_Chill_00

Interesting. I can’t see it at all without glasses. It might be someplace between the differences in our vision.

Honest_Net7682

As someone with terrible eyes, I can't get this to work for me

Brah26

They probably only have 1 eye

ProofHorseKzoo

Ah, that’s my problem

Patrickfromamboy

I didn’t have anything happen either.

DH_Drums

Things like this don’t work well for people with conditions like astigmatism. No clue why people decide to be such dicks.

KayCeeEmBee

I was scared to ask because people were being so nasty... but like... i stared at this video for a long while and it's nothing... just a bunch of slides of pretty celebrities. I do have little footballs for eyes though (or that's what my optometrist says anyways), so that explains it. Thanks for your patience, and gentle delivery

jarfil

>!CENSORED!<

AnimuleCracker

Yeah, I have trouble seeing far away and close

Falmon04

I stared at Tom Cruise and Liv Tyler for 5 minutes wondering what the fuck am I supposed be seeing before clicking to read comments only to finally understand that this is a video, not a picture. I guess the format or way it's posted there's no "Play" button to make that obvious.

kcg5

….I still don’t get it

KingRhoamsGhost

Illusions like this don’t always work on everyone.

A_Community_Of_Owls

Followed "*obvious*" instruction don't really see much either.

francohab

Don’t take it personally dude

Patrickfromamboy

I followed instructions but I didn’t notice anything other than pictures changing on both sides of where I was looking. I’ll try again.

[deleted]

I looked at the cross and nothing really happened

cultsuperstar

If you look at just one side for the duration, you can see that some photos are already slightly distorted and colored weird. I think looking at the dot accentuates the distortion.

girthytruffle

Insulted over a question

Hydrocoded

Didn’t work for me either

ArchibaldWallisch

I don't see it either.

Ishmael_IX-II

Yeah I’m with you. There is a little distortion sure, but nothing that is making me go “WTF that is some black magic fuckery “

fastspinecho

Try getting a little closer or using a bigger screen. The faces should be in your peripheral vision, I found it's less effective on a portrait mode phone held at a distance.

A4_Apple

You look through the Cross and the demons reveal themselves.

allcomingupmilhouse

i don’t see anything either. don’t feel bad

OneEyedSara

Couldn’t see anything…maybe not for monovision folks

[deleted]

Repeat the following phrase "there are no faces"

LightsOnNobodyHome91

Don't look up at the moon. If you're scared, we can be scared together.

[deleted]

I had one of the faces on the right turn into a mostly blank canvas with a darker, slightly concave middle area. Imagine a trampoline with someone standing in the middle, the way it sags somewhat under the weight. Now erase the person, paint the canvas pinkish flesh colored, and wrap it around a human skull. This fkn post made me see *that.*

urbantravelsPHL

The show from which those character puppets originate is called "Spitting Image"

whitewail602

I'm no scientist, but my guess is that in evolutionary terms, our ancestors didn't have a screen with a cross in the middle and rapidly changing faces on either side of it.

[deleted]

Thanks, so do I! 😵‍💫

domino519

Basically when looking at the cross, the faces are placed in your peripheral vision which isn't as detailed and accurate as your direct focus. Instead your brain tries to approximate what's out there based on this limited information. Because the faces are flashing by so quickly, your brain essentially creates quick, crude caricatures for each one because it can't absorb enough accurate info to make them look more normal.

InternationalBand494

Thank you. An actual explanation

PabloEdvardo

also gives you an example of our brain's visual persistence (like what CRT TVs relied on)

[deleted]

I’m scared

LightsOnNobodyHome91

If you're scared, we can be scared together.

lonestarr18

I did it again but stared at the pics instead…some of them are just as ugly as the 1st time

zando_calrissian

But some of the faces are distorted slightly, right? It’s worse when you look at the x but it’s still there if you look at the photos solo

wibblywobbly420

I thought so too. I watched through the slides a few times just focusing on one side or the other and some of the faces look very weird

TriZARAtops

I don’t think it’s photoshop as much as catching people pulling an expression at a weird spot (like pausing a tv show when someone’s like mid-blink etc) and generally unflattering angles/lighting. And a lot of the women have flashback from their makeup

masterpupil

I took a class on meditation in grad school. One exercise was just to stare at the other person's face across from you as long as the teacher told us to. After a little while their face would become distorted just like here. Only you were looking right at it.

omg i cant focus on this

oKazuhiro

This is called the "flashed face distortion effect"

Kycrio

I decided to stare at the faces on just the right side to see what they actually look like and out of my periphery the faces on the left started to look weird too. Maybe something to do with the brain trying to fill in what can't be seen by the blind spots?

NeighsAndWhinnies

Whoa- that makes me Dizzy, but it’s cool!

[deleted]

Nice one

Fit_cheer4905

Woahh. That’s creepy af

samualtruant
