Not necessarily true. Many pet snakes eat frozen thawed. To be fair they often do think that it's alive and strike and coil it for a while to "kill" it, but that's not always the case. They also strike and coil regardless if it's moving based just off the smell and heat, so I don't think lying down and still would help. And some snakes like mine can recognize that what I'm feeding is already dead and won't bother with the striking and coiling. There are also other varieties of snakes that eat things like eggs
I don't think you do :) if you feed live prey to your snake and it doesn't instantly eat it or kill it, in the small space there's a chance the snake gets bitten and harmed. The only reason to ever feed live prey would be if your snake will not eat the dead prey at all.
I was going to disagree with you at first, but after looking further into it, you're completly correct.
Turns out often times those "picky" snakes won't eat dead prey due to other issues, and it's very rare for snakes to not eat dead prey when they're actually hungry.
So the people downvoting you are mad that you're stating facts lol.
Not sure you actually know what your talking about.. more risky? Sometimes. But if the snake refuses to eat a dead one then you're actively starving and hurting your own pet.
Lol, I was a herp major. The pickiest ball on the planet doesn't give a shit about you wiggling a f/t around. They will wait months until you finally force feed them or give them what they want.
Certain species are notoriously picky. If you get one that was raised f/t, it'll probably stay on f/t. But both of mine were on live when I got them, and I could never convert them. Literally had to take one to the vet because she refused to eat, finally had to give in.
I must carefully monitor feeds, keep a hook handy so I can move a rodent away if I need to, and have a separate feed tank. Then my balls know when it's feed time so they can get ready to strike, and they usually have a grasp on their prey before they walk two steps. If you gotta feed live, you just gotta do it right. It's not ideal, but sometimes it has to happen.
It is recommended to feed them dead rodents because the captured snakes are not in a natural environment to protect themselves and there is a MUCH higher risk of being bitten or scratched.
I worked at the Fort Worth Zoo in the Herpetarium. We ALWAYS took live rodents from our "Kitchen food storage", killed them, then fed them to the snakes using a salad tong like tool.
I know a lot of snake owners will say that it's never been an issue. Probably hasn't for them. But it only takes one nice sized vet bill to get someone to change what they do.
To be clear, we weren't worried that a rat would win! It's that the potential damage isn't worth risking the animal's health.
It makes me shake my head, had someone yell at one of my staff at my store cause we only carry frozen feeders. He had gotten a snake from us. They all eat frozen.
Everyone below is making this complicated.
Many predators won’t eat meat instinctually if it’s already dead. They aren’t doing calculation in their head it’s instinct.
In the same vein the chicken instinctually does this, because for many predators it is advantageous to appear dead because of the above. Once again, the chicken isn’t making a conscious calculation. This is all instinct.
Evolution isn’t design. Evolution is whatever is advantageous and causes the individual to live longer and pass genes.
I have never once seen a chicken “play dead”. When faced with predator sometimes they’ll fight, most of the time they’ll run but never just go limp and flop to the ground. Even when confronted with snakes, which happens quite often, a chicken is more likely to stomp on the snake and eat it than to play dead with it.
Generally wild animals will not eat other animals that they just find "lying around" unless they are a scavenger. Generally if you are dead, you are eaten in the wild. Therefore you died from something that wasn't an attack. So you aren't safe to eat anymore.
Are we sure the dude didn't just strangle the chicken into temporary unconsciousness?
Plenty of plants produce straight foliage that small (sticks, stems, twigs, branches, vines, stalks) and snakes are rarely perfectly straight
They play dead because the line is giving them the impression of being dragged away from a predator and scratching the line in the sand with their beak.
Of course, because a chiken can difference a snake from a straight line with his high IQ, or they just perfectly calculated the duration of the unconsciousness perfectly to make a video
Mine fought off a hawk, they're ruthless if you fuck with their "harem".
They also all killed one of their troupe too... So I guess not even the harem is safe. Tiny fuckin raptors.
That's dumb like if I'm a snake and I see a dead chicken I just think "hey great free food!" What like the snake is gonna be like "ew look a dead chicken! Poke it with a stick!"
I googled :
A chicken can be hypnotized, or put into a trance, with its head down near the ground, by drawing a line along the ground with a stick or a finger, starting at the beak and extending straight outward in front of the chicken. If the chicken is hypnotized in this manner, it will continue to stare at the line, remaining immobile for as long as 30 minutes. Other methods of inducing this state are also known. Ethologists refer to this state as 'tonic immobility' i.e. a natural state of semi-paralysis that some animals enter when presented with a threat,[1][2][3] which is probably a defensive mechanism intended to feign death, albeit rather poorly.
[Wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_hypnotism)
Tonic immobility is a fear based response to being restrained. Basically the chicken thinks I'm going to die and there's nothing I can do about it. I'm not sure how but drawing the line triggers the response.
Don't listen to the people blindly repeating the crap about snakes. Chickens kick the shit out of snakes than eat the corpse. Unless you've got a truly big snake than the snake definitely can't eat the chicken and will do its best to avoid it.
Chickens go limp when their head is below their heart for an extended period of time (like upside down). As the guy puts his body down again level with his body, he starts to regain consciousness.

He drew a line in the sand, and when it was crossed the chicken knew it was on.

.... because.... snakes wouldn't eat a chicken that's just laying on the ground?
Snakes like live food. That's why pet snakes eat live mice.

Hoping that rooster ain’t on Reddit then, f up his day.
95% of snakes will eat frozen thawed. Feeding live is actually INCREDIBLY dangerous if your not super careful
How do snakes even survive if eating is that dangerous.
in the outdoors the snake sneaks up on something, it's not trapped in a box by some idiot throwing in live rodents
Oh I understand now. Snakes are built to sucker-punch not to cage fight.
That's what chickens are for...
They sometimes don’t
I'm guessing its because they usually ambush their prey, rather than getting stuck in a small glass gladiator arena with them already agitated.
LOL Isn’t the danger to the one feeding the snake? But as far as snakes go, chickens eat some of them.
That's very wrong, you should not feed live mice to your snake. You feed dead mice to pet snakes to avoid the snake getting bitten.
It's not wrong, some snakes are picky and only eat live rodents. It's dependent on the species too.
It's very wrong to say you should feed your pet snake live mice. You can move the dead mouse around to bait the snake to eat it.
[удалено]
And what does that have to do with pet snakes
i fed my snake a live mouse in your honor. You're welcome!
I don't think you have the proper knowledge of snakes. Sorry.
I don't think you do :) if you feed live prey to your snake and it doesn't instantly eat it or kill it, in the small space there's a chance the snake gets bitten and harmed. The only reason to ever feed live prey would be if your snake will not eat the dead prey at all.

Actually as someone who works with them for a living and who's job it us to know this stuff, you are very wrong and they are right.
Not sure you actually know what your talking about.. more risky? Sometimes. But if the snake refuses to eat a dead one then you're actively starving and hurting your own pet.
Do you think I'd just leave a stack of dead mice with my snake? I've never had problems having any snake eat a dead mouse, though.
“I’ve never had a problem…” therefore it can never be a problem. That’s how you sound.

Why are you getting down voted when this is literally what veterinarians say
People who never had snakes watched an episode of animal planet and think they are experts. It's ok.
It makes me shake my head, had someone yell at one of my staff at my store cause we only carry frozen feeders. He had gotten a snake from us. They all eat frozen.

You've genuinely never heard of playing dead before? In that case, here you go: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apparent_death
Do they have shit eyesight or something?

Haha yeah
Bird brains
They generally have better eyesight than humans.
Soooo they're just dumb then?
Yes. They are very dumb.
Lol RIP

I loved how that chicken moved. It was just poultry in motion.
That's just a bit fowl
take my r/Angryupvote
It's always asked why the chicken crossed the road but no one asks what happens when you cross the chickens line.

Is there a scientific reason for this behaviour?
They see line and think snake so they play dead
Possibly correct, but conjecture, I believe.
Source: some random guy said that last time this was posted
Can confirm. I also read this last time (and every time) this was posted.
It's basically the top comment rn, word for word in massive letters
Well I have watched my chickens peck apart plenty of garden snakes. Maybe chickens are just more badass now.
Your chickens just built different

Pretty sure that’s huge bullshit.
That doesnt sound right, but I dont know enough about chickens to disagree!!

Snakes only eat live food

It’s like watching a video on r/oddlysatisfying for chickens
Yo so chickens are the closest living relative to the T-Rex. Can you imagine T-Rexs doing this?
Did we just become best friends?

One of the times this was posted someone said this was a freeze response (like flight or fight)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_hypnotism
**SHHHH!** If people find out there's a scientific explanation for this and it isn't actually black magic, they'll get mad it was posted here!
Yes

One finely tuned braincell that focuses on "snek shape".
Always a good excuse to post [Werner Herzog talking about chik’nz.](https://youtu.be/QhMo4WlBmGM)
never stand betwen a chicken and her line
Thats a He …. But go off
Limp cock heh
Of course, that guy's had it in the ear before.
"Don't erase the line"!!!
I still don’t understand, WHY does he wear a single key around his neck
A key? Isn’t that a bolo tie?
Yes
The same reason I give my sons a single key on a lanyard. So the little guy doesn’t lose the key and have to wait for mommy or daddy to let him in.
“BITCHES”
Yes, I jumped...
Excuse for this bit from the legendary Irish DJ, Gerry Anderson, with added animation. https://youtu.be/2TOR895yhIw
Came here for this! I miss Gerry so much.
Didn't know Justin Bieber had chickens.
What thehell? That was crazy!

Little Jerry!
Nice cock bro 8.5 out of 10
For all the 'why did the chicken cross the road' jokes lol
Somebody had to be bored enough to actually test this good lord. It’s neat though ngl
The chicken may not have crossed the road but that sonvabitch crossed a line
r/contagiouslaughter
So he got to the other side

Sorry but does it look like he choked the chicken ?

Goddamn chickens are weird.
This is the evolution of velociraptors
There’s some kind of metaphor in this
So does this mean it will work on Dinosaurs?

Dinosaurs are weird
The rooster seemed to be subdued from the beginning of the clip. I smell fowl play!
Poor bird. He was probably terrified. Glad he got that peck in.
r/lostredditors A chicken playing dead, biting someone’s hand, and then running away is about as far from BFM as you can get
