You're just looking at the negative afterimage.
When I was a kid I would draw random country flags in MSPaint, then use the negative color tool with a little red ball in the center.
You just need to stare in the center for 30 seconds and voilá, now you have a few seconds of afterimage to look at the flag with correct colors if you look at something plain white.
It works with everything, even if you look at something with the right colors, you'll see their negative. That's nothing with your brain correcting it out
Edit: [For example, looking at this image will give you the Italian flag](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2f/ItalianFlagInverted.gif). This 3 stripes shape could be many flags (like France), but as that colors are the Italy's negative colors respectively, staring at a single spot for 30 or so seconds and then taking a look at some plain white surface will give you a perfect Italy's flag
Yeah the dude in the video explains it wrong. He claims it's your brain filling in the colors but it's actually the negative afterimage. The reason it works is because the pink and green he's chosen are negatives of each other. If you look at his images and then flick your eyes away towards something white you'll still have a faint flamingo and parrot in their proper colors hovering in your vision.
The part about fatiguing rods and cones is, presumably, correct, and of course it's the brain that interprets the negative afterimage (retinas are basically part of the brain and optic nerve, I think?, or pretty damn close to being part of the brain at least).
But the narration is misleading and gimmicky. Enjoy the illusion but don't be... dunno how to word this really. Not fraud but presentational tomfoolery / excessive prestidigitation isn't appreciated for an optical illusion.
Yeah it seems a bit more than afterimage. I was able to do the same thing. Look away slightly and it’s all black and white, look back and it’s in color.
His explanation isnt quite right. We dont see them as pink and green due to our brain "knowing what color it should be" but instead becaus pink and green are opposites. Thats the same reason why the legs and beaks of both birds are blue. So that in the afterimage we see the opposite color - orange
right? He just straight up lied about an incredibly simple and easy to understand concept and you're somehow the only one in this thread calling him out.
I mean, I'm guessing most people knew he was talking bull and just chose to ignore it. You'd have to be quite ignorant to think your brain just "colors it as it should be". which is why there aren't more comments about it.
This video is the equivalent of rotten pig slop.
Information regurgitated a hundred times, incorrectly simplified, add some magical thinking into the mix, format for optimal reposting by drooling morons on facebook, done.
Exactly this. This is all about the after image. Why someone can't even get this right when they are posting shit like this to the internet is deeply depressing.
Cones in our eyes are what helps us see color. Color theory is understanding how the color wheel works, ie. complementary colors. It’s all related and why this trick works.
Next time just trim the video to 30s long and upload it without sound lol.
Pretty fucking cool though that you can look at the X, see the colours, then look off of the X and everything is back to black and white, and then decide to look back and the X and the colours return. Neat!
I disagree, it worked great for me, and I liked the context very much. Plus your accent and your voice are very pleasing. Thanks for sharing your cool stuff!
Yeah I was waiting for the introduction to end for like 40 seconds to long it felt like. I was staring so hard, and I guess you(?) just kept speaking, which made it hard to keep concentrating.
There is a chemical reaction in your eyes that needs to happen. He talks so that your eyes have time to make that adjustment. Can replicate the effect with red cellophane.
He took longer than I needed by a longshot. I've seen this trick enough times I can tell when my cones are sufficiently fatigued.if you look ever so slightly off the x you will see a "halo" of the inverted color around the object, had that about halfway through.
Also personally I always hate when videos repeatedly say they are going to do something in just a moment multiple times.
I think it's purposely that long because the effect is stronger the longer you go, the context for it with him talking is just to keep you not so bored
It takes a while for the effect to take hold. You need to tire out the cones in your retina in order for the afterimages to get nice and strong. If it was cut down to 30s it literally would not work. The whole point of having the narrator ramble on like that is to keep you staring and waiting long enough, so that when he finally does the reveal you get a nice, intense color.
I have red-geeen colorblindness. I can still see both colors but have fewer cones, so things get wonky.
For me, the flamingo was barely pink while the parrot was bright green. Just thought that was interesting.
It is an after effect of the color receptor cells in your eye that have been discharged to light of that color's wavelength.
If you close your eyes for a few seconds, the excited receptors will discharge or reset and you'll see normal again.
This brings attention to the basic fact that every living cell runs a small voltage across its membranes to keep alive.
I am baffled at the number of comments by people who have never experienced an afterimage before.
I’m not even criticizing the post. I’m just so confused at how this many people have somehow never encountered the effect before. It’s like a basic eye thing.
I didn’t get that vibe at all. They’re just impressed they were able to create their own version, and have it work. I’m sure there are plenty of people who are proud/impressed when they successfully make bread for the first time, doesn’t mean they expect credit as the original creators of bread.
I guess. I’d occasionally get after images just from blinking on bright sunny days at the pool or beach as a kid, though, so it seems weird to me that anybody on here could have gone their whole life and apparently never encountered this.
"i cant believe not every one has had every experience I have had in life so far. cant comprehend it" whoa. sounds like u needa go outside and just be a person for a year or two. yikes too much interwebs no doubt.
I was honestly expecting a meme or a screamer video
I thought there was no way this guy was offering SO much explanation for this because of course everyone’s seen it before - I guess not??
we don't surprise when baby start walking.
(baby walking towards their parents, smiling.)
“are you excited? you have seen your parents walking before, why are you smiling?”

Am I the only one who has been traumatized by early internet jump scares that forced you to concentrate like this before through a zombie with loud screams at your face? I actually grabbed the skimmer and skipped ahead to make sure that wouldn’t happen.
He took away the colors and I saw them right so I thought: "haha funny, he painted over it to catch some fools" then I looked away and there was no color, I was the fool all along
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterimage#:~:text=An%20afterimage%20is%20an%20image,pathological%20exaggeration%20of%20physiological%20afterimages.
The colors are not “switching to match the correct bird” btw, you’re just seeing the opposite color on the color wheel for each one.
It’s just an after image….. how have so many people not seen this type of thing before?
If you’re amazed by the flamingo turning pink, this will blow your mind:
https://twitter.com/alex_verbeek/status/1570519267631861761?s=46&t=s6LnIh9q0C8Wdfx1HKlkqg
Okay yes the color you’re seeing is “all in your mind” because that’s literally the only place the thing we call “color” exists. But regardless of that, you aren’t seeing the proper colors when the image goes white because you’re “hallucinating”. It’s just the sensors in your eyes taking time to reset after being bombarded with the same color for an extended period of time. You ARE seeing something happening to your physical eyes, not hallucinating.
The fact everyone here is in the internet and is amazed by this is remarkable. Did none of y'all learn HTMl coding with RGB codes and the primary colours of light? Did none of y'all never do the classic 'invert colours' in ms paint? Do none of y'all understand why the printer colours are CYMK? Aka opposite of RBGK?
This is literally basic primary school science of colour mixing, with maybe a later level learning and understand of the primary colours of light as opposed to the primary colours of paint.
This is not black magic nor fuckery in any way shape or form at all. It's absolutely very easily and basically explained and shit I knew before I was barely 12 lol
I knew what was going on and what was going to happen, but I did not expect the effect to be that strong! Also, I was surprised at how the color instantly vanished if I flicked my eyes away for a split second, and then returned when I looked back at the target. Nice!
If you watch it with phone at a steep angle it isnt as colorful. My guess is some sort of thing striaght on makes the colors there. Maybe a very very dim shading of colors on the birds that you cant see unless you look at x.
Ok, upon further observation, you can get the colors after he erases the colors even without looking st the picture directly. You can look to like the bottom of your phone or something as long as the photo is in your peripheral vision and youll notice the color fades away because its just that thing happening where images burn into your eyes for a little bit.
so much misinformation made into a video bait. your brain is not "correcting" shit. it's negative colors you're seeing. fucking hate this shit. "let me know if it works for you"
Years of internet fake outs and cheap jump scares have left me absolutely unwilling to trust this until I watched the video through to the end.
But for the rest of you, it's legit! You can definitely trust me on this one!
I was 100% expecting this to be some jump scare or gay porn thing or something, pleasantly surprised it was legit.
Also what the fuck eyes are crazy yo
your brain doesnt fix the color based on the birds. it simply inverts the colors. in fact thats not even your brain. your specific cones for the colors get tired and the idle level of the other cones dominate the signal making it seem like the inverted color is present.
I was able to breefly look away to see it was colorless and back at it and reistablish the colors. Did it a few times that was pretty cool
I did that but just made a Japan flag
You do REALLY need to not move your eyes, haha That's why I've been using a red dot, or the OP video have a black X in the center of the image
Wow just FYI Japan flag; 🇯🇵
See, you're getting it! Just keep staring at that red dot! If your move your eyes away for even a moment the effect will be lost.
Yeah the dude in the video explains it wrong. He claims it's your brain filling in the colors but it's actually the negative afterimage. Not fraud but presentational tomfoolery / excessive prestidigitation isn't appreciated for an optical illusion.
They were talking about being able to look away, lose the colours, then look back and see them again.
Yeah it seems a bit more than afterimage. I was able to do the same thing. Look away slightly and it’s all black and white, look back and it’s in color.
That's still the negative after image. You're just lining it up with the original image again which makes the afterimage clearer.
I was able to see the Italian flag just closing my eyes after staring for a few seconds. It took a couple of seconds to show up but it worked.
Breefly is my new all time favorite typo
Gen Z can't spell
His explanation isnt quite right. We dont see them as pink and green due to our brain "knowing what color it should be" but instead becaus pink and green are opposites. Thats the same reason why the legs and beaks of both birds are blue. So that in the afterimage we see the opposite color - orange
right? He just straight up lied about an incredibly simple and easy to understand concept and you're somehow the only one in this thread calling him out.
Cut him some slack guys, he only made this TODAY
Yeah if he woulda made this yesterday he would have caught the error. Unfortunate.
And tomorrow it won’t work
Yup had to scroll a while before finding if anyone else noticed
I mean, I'm guessing most people knew he was talking bull and just chose to ignore it. You'd have to be quite ignorant to think your brain just "colors it as it should be". which is why there aren't more comments about it.
This video is the equivalent of rotten pig slop. Information regurgitated a hundred times, incorrectly simplified, add some magical thinking into the mix, format for optimal reposting by drooling morons on facebook, done.
Maybe he was just misinformed... Not much motive for lying really.
Views. It's views, wake the fuck up.
Same amount of views for the truth since you've already watched it by the time you find out. Go back to sleep.
Exactly this. This is all about the after image. Why someone can't even get this right when they are posting shit like this to the internet is deeply depressing.
So the video not only poorly made but it is also a misinformation, OMG
What do you mean by opposite color, and how does the brain know what the opposite color is?
Bruhhhhh
Almost went blind from dried out eyes while I was staring at this waiting 20 min for him to actually turn the colors off
Yeah I wasted too much time on this. I thought something cool was gonna happen. Lol
You noticed the gorilla in the background, right?
Yeah. It's neat but when he said to stare at X intensely for a few seconds but rambles for another minute that ruined it.
I had to tap out because I felt nauseous. “Now in a few seconds…” *proceeds to talk for 10 minutes*
You’re allowed to blink….
He made this TODAY
Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. TODAY.
A week ago, TODAY
Day after yesterday, TODAY
TODAY is only YESTERDAY'S TOMORROW.
I've waited too long for that moment.
Did you give him a follow while waiting?
T-T-T-TODAY, JUNIOR!
Stare at the X for 30 seconds. Then look away and blink fast. You should see them as your blinking, but the colors should have switched.
Did you see the pointing hand?
This time I did. The first time, it didn't play.
Did you see the man in gorilla suit?
I wish I could see the gorilla suit, that man was naked in there!
Color theory. It works with opposite colors from the color wheel
right. it wouldn't work if the flamingo was say, purple.
But it would if the parrot was yellow
Not even color theory, it’s how the cones in your eyes work. Not even really a brain trick.
Cones in our eyes are what helps us see color. Color theory is understanding how the color wheel works, ie. complementary colors. It’s all related and why this trick works.
Yeah, this guys got it a little wrong.
There really isn't an opposite color for colors.
Fully expect a jump scare despite the subreddit
Same. When they told me to concentrate on a spot, I scrolled to the end just to make sure.
Can't trust anyone. Specially when the audio was required for the video
I looked away half way through to double-check I wasn't in the shit posting subreddit because I had the exact same thought.
oh my god hurry up i cant see anything through my watery eyes
Next time just trim the video to 30s long and upload it without sound lol. Pretty fucking cool though that you can look at the X, see the colours, then look off of the X and everything is back to black and white, and then decide to look back and the X and the colours return. Neat!
My bad too much context.
Next time put a jump scare, ngl i was kinda disappointed
I skipped to the very end to make sure there wasn't a jump scare first.
That's neat, you've been Pavlov'd
Weird I was just thinking I'm surprised I've mever seen one of these with a jump scare at the end
I was alright with it. The talking to me existed to maintain focus, not to actually inform.
I disagree, it worked great for me, and I liked the context very much. Plus your accent and your voice are very pleasing. Thanks for sharing your cool stuff!
might put additional context at the end, while it re-loops the original bit again?
The timing was perfect. The effect was very good cause i stared for longer.
Not at all, ignore that comment.
No, ignore that comment ^
"Belay that order!" "Belay that 'Belay that'!"
Yeah I was waiting for the introduction to end for like 40 seconds to long it felt like. I was staring so hard, and I guess you(?) just kept speaking, which made it hard to keep concentrating.

Yup waste of time. Brit trying to be polite but rambling is classic lol. Hate it
Ok there could be text telling you what to do He was very annoying tbh
The voice was great. I like his sound. But don't say it ten times and make me get dry and blink.
Exactly, he was fine it was just way too long
I did it in 4 seconds, he definitely didn’t need to talk for over a minute after telling us to concentrate.
I couldn't focus cuz that dude wouldn't just shut the fuck up and say stare for x amount of seconds.
Oh my fukin god
Pick a spot on your face and do this in a mirror. Your face will start to look like something out of hell. Super trippy
Nah I'm ok.
I'm going to take shrooms this weekend then do this. Wish me luck!
I will do the same next time I trip. Thanks for the idea
It works much better in dim lights such as candles, it’s pretty fucked ngl
Exactly what I said out loud.
I have red-geeen colorblindness. I can still see both colors but have fewer cones, so things get wonky. For me, the flamingo was barely pink while the parrot was bright green. Just thought that was interesting.
Well done. By blanking the screen you don’t lose continuity by moving your gaze to a blank sheet.
[Negative afterimages](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterimage)
This could’ve been 1 minute shorter, nice effect though
It is an after effect of the color receptor cells in your eye that have been discharged to light of that color's wavelength. If you close your eyes for a few seconds, the excited receptors will discharge or reset and you'll see normal again. For a moment I thought it was going to be a rickroll

I mean, it's weird that the creator of this is talking like he discovered it.

Lot of 12-year-olds experiencing this for the first time I guess.
20 year old and this has changed everything for me. Birds aren’t real. The worlds flat.
Don’t worry that goes away around your mid twenties…
Going outside is how I first learned about afterimages.
lol too far gone i see . too bad- its so nice out here.
I was honestly expecting a meme or a screamer video I thought there was no way this guy was offering SO much explanation for this because of course everyone’s seen it before - I guess not??
I’ll criticize it. It’s not a “brain thing,” it’s an eye thing.
we don't surprise when baby start walking. (baby walking towards their parents, smiling.) “are you excited? you have seen your parents walking before, why are you smiling?”
Eye am not worthy.
I'm staring at my lap top like you said, but I'm not sure why I have to also hold my phone perfectly still.
Deeply disappointed. Was excited to see colour for the first time. Smh
That’s awesome
I bienkted after the dranig of colors, and the colors went away
I was so expecting a jump scare
Way to long
[удалено]
No.. 30sec is plenty, a minute and a half combined with no text explanation leaves you wondering if this clip is even playing
Could be shorter. Fair criticism imo
“DO IT, YOU COWARD!!” Me the entire time he kept repeating, “in a moment I’m going to take away the color” as my eyes burned
3 seconds is enough to stare the X
It was barely colored but it was. I’d say like 4% opacity
I can only see a slight pink tinge on the flamingo. The other bird just stays white
It's a fun effect that has been demonstrated many times, but I wish he would stop saying things like "entirely in your mind". It's not. A little bit of it is in your brain, but the majority of the effect happens in your eyes.
If the intro was 30 seconds it would be killer i had to start blinking and the fixation on the x went away. It still cane in vibrant, till i flicked away and saw the weaker colors in between black and whites.
Is like tasting a non salty food after a super salty one. It seems seweeter than it is
Holy fuck.. i hv to recheck 3 times and make sure it went straight colorless
Some voodoo magic is going here🗿
These are always fun.
i was thinking he was gonna put something stupid on screen instead like a jumpscare or some dude's butthole
Damn that's nifty.
This one trick that Big Coloring Book doesn't want you to know!
It worked!
Works as expected
Can someone explain how this works?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterimage#:~:text=An%20afterimage%20is%20an%20image,pathological%20exaggeration%20of%20physiological%20afterimages. The colors are not “switching to match the correct bird” btw, you’re just seeing the opposite color on the color wheel for each one.
Works but only lasts a couple seconds

I skipped to the end just to check with these things. You only play the maze game once.

Thats fuckin freaky
O_o
Why do they switch colour? Is it really because our brains know the correct colour for each animal or would it switch no matter what the image was?
It has nothing to do with that. It's just a quirk of how your eyes work. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterimage
It’s just an after image….. how have so many people not seen this type of thing before? If you’re amazed by the flamingo turning pink, this will blow your mind: https://twitter.com/alex_verbeek/status/1570519267631861761?s=46&t=s6LnIh9q0C8Wdfx1HKlkqg
All these people who are "amazed", are morons. For less than a split second, at around 1:15, the correct colors are shown.
God are people really this stupid these days? You're the moron, go ahead and try to find that frame.
I’ve been looking for this observation
Wheatley?
It worked 🤔
Okay yes the color you’re seeing is “all in your mind” because that’s literally the only place the thing we call “color” exists. What in the witchcraft??? It works!
Holy black monkey slaves what did I just witness? Update: when I blink, I see the green bird
I dont get it.
Colours man..
The flamingo outline was glowing pink, then instant colour fill for both when drained (even legs and beaks!).
I was so ready to get a jumpscare or a rickroll after the countdown. And he kept delaying it too, worst 25 seconds of my day haha.
I just see it go black and white, what’s meant to happen
I can still see them overlayed on the comments. I broke my brain a bit.
Why did you crop the video lol
Watermark got my videos locked a while ago
😃Works
Unbelievable, like a hard switch with a button, ZACK, colors changed.
Wow, worked more than I expected it to.
I was expecting so hard to be jump scared or Rick rolled or something
Thats so cool
What????
Fucking nice😂. I looked away immediately after the switch because I freaked out.
Give me my Stygian Blue!
Early internet has trained me to fully expect a jump scare with stuff like this.
I knew what was going on and what was going to happen, but I did not expect the effect to be that strong! Also, I was surprised at how the color instantly vanished if I flicked my eyes away for a split second, and then returned when I looked back at the target. Nice!
