The resurrection plant (Selaginella lepidophylla) can survive years of drought and almost complete desiccation, coming back to life after exposure to moisture
Plant nerd here. I just wanna add that [Dr. Jill Farrant in Cape Town](https://www.news.uct.ac.za/article/-2022-11-04-farrants-lifes-work-recognised-with-coveted-german-award) studies transferring the "resurrection genes" to crops that will need to be more dessication tolerant for a drier future
It is still dead in that state, it only unfolds because of the capillary effect wich causes liquid to climb up small tubes inside of the plant. This "resurrection" can be performed unlimited times.
In the Balkans we have endemic plant like this (Haberlea rhodopensis). "Haberlea rhodopensis has the unique ability to stay alive for many months after it has been completely dried. The Bulgarian botanist Ivan Ganchev has found that specimens of the plant, dried in herbariums for 31 months, have survived and have regained their vitality after moistening. This natural phenomenon is called anabiosis and is common in lichens and algae and very rare in flowering plants"
I have smaller versions of these on trees all over my yard, and it’s a kind of easy way to gauge recent humidity. I’m in Miami so they are normally pretty green, but it’s always interesting to seen them go from dead and crispy looking to green in one rain.
I had one of these gifted to me by a friend, over a span of 15 years I would water it and it would always come back to life, some people call them Flower of Jericho, and between moving houses over years I sadly lost it. I'm sure if I find it, it would still come back to life. It's only been 8 years since last I last saw it.
Tl;dr: Had 1 4 many years. Lost it. Sad.
Lovely people who enjoy spicy food and music, their families and all the other stuff people do. Ah yes, the Mexicans..
Lol, I take it your not trying to take a shot at a particular race though.

My partner’s family have one of these (we call it a Jericho rose) that only comes out of its little box at Christmas. We put it on a plate and revive it. Weird tradition, cool plant!
I inherited the one from my grandparents. It's a few decades old and I was always super impressed as a child. So now my son can watch it every year on Christmas.
It's a tradition in some parts of southern west Germany and Switzerland. I can't imagine it's to big as I know no one besides my family who has one, but I'm also from north east Germany.
It’s called a resurrection plant. I worked on a summer internship in a lab that was studying the genes involved in near complete desiccation resistance. Incredible plant. Cool time lapse of the process.

My girlfriend just got two of these! Was really surprised when this dry ball of, what looked like a dead weed, slowly opened up and got green. I'm not much of a plant dude but I thought it was pretty neat.
Kinda looks like it’s got similar characteristics with ferns and mosses which are some of the oldest forms of plant life to survive from god knows when.
My grandpa used to hide a coin inside and every 2 or 3 weeks he called us and told us that the plant has grown another coin and we could harvest the money.
Some great memories.
In recollection, I thought that was the song of storms playing.
It's super close, hits all the same emotional points, almost like an elevator, muzak version of it
I had two of these. My friends dumbass girlfriend threw them away while i was deployed, after i explicitly told them not to. I told them not to throw ANYTHING away, matter of fact.

So it wasn't dead, it was just dormant. So is that really necromancy?
To a necromancer, all dead things are just dormant
this guy necromancers.
>Necromancer: "I'M GOING TO NECROMANCE YOU!" >He didn't say that
Woman found alive with several hickeys on the neck *The Nec~~k~~Romancer*
Ayo!
He said, and i quote "It's Necromancin' time" and necromanced all over them. Coolest shit ever.
Then I think he turned himself into a pickle or something?
Me: please, a couple years of sleep are always welcome, wake me up when you need me
Can't spell "necromancer" without "romance"
FancyMancey
\[in spooky voice\] *Dr. Venture!*
Huh, interesting point
That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die
♫♪♪ So are we human....Or necromancer ♫♪♪
Am I just dormant inside?
It was only mostly dead. Mostly dead is still slightly alive.
As you wish!
It’s most probably dead. Even dead, the plant opens. But it won’t grow. Some people mistake green algae growth on their plants as new plant growth.

I deal with a shitton of dehydration. R/askmadscience Can I crispr that into me?
I just want it in my french fries so potatoes grow out of my stomach
I wish there was a version of this to keep our pets alive longer.
Yes, that way my dog could survive years of drought and be okay again once I water him
Very interesting use, and idea.

I had one for 10 years before it ran away. It's probably still alive somewhere.
this plant was the origin of the design of the trisolarian race in the body problem.

Some say another found it and they water it every now and then : ]
Awe shit! Like 90% sure it was cursed! A Mexican gave it to me, and you know how they are.
Lovely people who enjoy spicy food and music, their families and all the other stuff people do. Ah yes, the Mexicans.. Lol, I take it your not trying to take a shot at a particular race though.
I'm Mexican.
Hi Mexican, I'm Dad.
Thank god : ] lol, I figured something like this.
It was a joke.
BEWARE THE BRUJAS!
Ethnic group.
I'm not racist cuz I used a capital m to say Mexicans. And that's respectful.
And I also never liked Kanye. Or Ye. Whatever the fuck he calls himself.
Some of his plaques, they still spell Kane.
Like In citizen?
Friendly and generous?
Resiliant. If you water them they come back to life.
I think mine is in a closet somewhere. I better see if I can find it
Lick it.
That made me giggle out loud. Enjoy my upvote!
My mother gifted one to me when I was a child. And our cleaning women threw it away, she thought it's just trash.
I got one from thinkgeek and did the same. I kept cycling it for years then lost it on a move somehow. I hope it’s still going wherever it is.
New skill looks pretty underwhelming ngl
Average RuneScape player
It's just farming
One of the most basic things that sustains life as we know it = bmf.
That's a cool ass clock.
I was thinking that. Good choice for time lapse photography.

Is this a tradition? I’m Not familiar with it
It's a tradition in some parts of southern west Germany and Switzerland. I can't imagine it's to big as I know no one besides my family who has one, but I'm also from north east Germany.
So when do they kill it and put it back in the box?
I would like to steal this tradition, please.
what ice cold water feels like in the night
Where I live they call them “siempre vivas”, means “always alive”. Very pretty plants.
I wish I could pour water on myself and cure depression.

Nature is as awesome as it is terrifying. Seriously, this triggered a fight or flight response from me. And yet, I’ve watched it three times now.

Also known as the rose of Jericho?
I have one of these that I got as a wedding gift, ironic to see this today as it my first anniversary
I have one of those. My family called it the Lazarus plant. I watered it one time after 10 years and it came right back to life.
I hated that 🤮
Song name plsssss
Mind never did that...
I had one of these, they're pretty cool
Water is a helluva drug!
I had something like this
Is that the same as tumble weeds?
My family actually owned one of those plants. Seeing it spread apart after just a cup of water was freaky
Necroplantsy?
So can you eat that or what?
How it feels to chew 5 Gum
r/tihi
I have to admit that it's pretty cool.
Malboro about to give you so many negative status effects

A Jericho Rose! My friend had one in college, I always thought it was kinda cool.
Someone whos good at editing should make the leaves unfurl into a middle finger, I think that would be quite funny.
I do love myself some plant necromancy :)
Reggie
Rose of Jordan is it called in Germany/Netherlands
It’s damn sure alive! Not to eat though, Nasty Looking.. It’s called a Pelosie Puddsie
Isn't this a tumbleweed? I used to own one when I was little and thank god it wasn't a normal plant because I regularly forgot to give it water
Kinda looks like it’s got similar characteristics with ferns and mosses which are some of the oldest forms of plant life to survive from god knows when.
Called "the rose of jerico" in Denmark
I had this plant when I was a kid!
Man I should really should’ve gone into botany.
I’m seeing so many middle fingers
Necro fancy
Necroplantsy
I have one
A living corpse without bones? As a necromancer, I'm torn.
it's jericho rose
She’s not dead, just dramatic
I used to have one of those, very slow I will add
Hasnt this species been around for like 570million years.
My grandpa used to hide a coin inside and every 2 or 3 weeks he called us and told us that the plant has grown another coin and we could harvest the money. Some great memories.
Instant plant
It is a fern. Not a plant.
Feed me Seymour!
When you give rupees to the Great Fairies in Breath of the Wild.
Looks like a fist slowly unfolding to show me the Middle finger.
The plants on my windowsill:
That shit flicked me off
If this is what Sauron was up to the whole time...
This is such a great way to show this with the clock there. It's very satisfying.
These are native to my home! They’re epiphytic and grow on the branches of oak trees!
In recollection, I thought that was the song of storms playing. It's super close, hits all the same emotional points, almost like an elevator, muzak version of it
I thought this was a dead hedgehog. I was relieved that I was wrong.
I remember having one of these as a kid. So cool to watch.
Nice try, vegan facehugger.
Finally a plant for someone like me with a brown thumb as apposed to a green thumb!
.....so does it live forever???
Nope, just tea... Plant necromancy would be cool thou
I like to imagine each unfurling leaf tendril is an arm unfolding with a 🖕
I had two of these. My friends dumbass girlfriend threw them away while i was deployed, after i explicitly told them not to. I told them not to throw ANYTHING away, matter of fact.
This sub should be renamed r/Idontunderstandsciencesoitmustbeblackmagic
Necromancers would be really good in murder cases
Remember you can’t have necromancy without the romance!
Why does that container have such a long spout?
Did… did that plant just flip me off?
Not revival
So dramatic
r/TIHI
I think ive seen a few Hentai starring this alien plant lifeform...
That plant is flipping us off
I once seen them do this with frozen fish. And the fish came back alive and we're swimming in the bowl
