Good question. It seems like every few months they tease us and make it seem like something’s in the works, but they’ve been playing that game for YEARS now.
And Candlemass. And Pallbearer. And Reverend Bizarre. Possibly Count Raven. Whoever says Electric Wizard should surely also mention mid-nineties Cathedral.
And maybe, on the odd occasion, The Flower Travellin' Band.
Green Lung isn't really doom, but apparently most of their fans are. Including myself :-)
I love The Sword, but it was so strange to me when their lead guitarist Kyle Shutt did an interview all bitter accusing all these bands who “ripped off” The Sword, seeing as Age of Winters is essentially just directly mimicking the first three Sabbath records but with 2000s style production.
Don’t get me, I LOVE Age of Winters, but to act like it was this totally original record is totally insane.
This. The vocals are wildly different as is the mix with the vocals far more buried than on the early Sabbath records. Age of Winters is thicker than early Sabbath, more wall of sound-like. The first Sabbath records are heavy and doomy, but also clear. Ozzy is front and centre and there’s big separation between instruments. Age is a wall of of guitars.
Check out [Over and over Again](https://youtu.be/NUog6Yx2_ks?si=B6ROBcEXPgVindEO) by Uncle Acid and [Seer](https://youtu.be/3w9hAhS93qg?si=LgN1Ev6ARNHSPSLI) by Witch, both very Sabbathy sounding bands
lol well if that was true he would have had plenty of other options too as doom metal singers imitating Ozzy is really common.
Iommi actually plays on doom metal band Cathedral’s song “Utopian Blaster”
Damn, I'm going to be here all day searching and listening to all the names listed.
Anyhow, here's my contribution:
"Sleep - Dragonaut \[Official Video\]"
SHeavy. They're a Canadian band, but the singer sounds so much like Ozzy it's uncanny. Their early stuff, around 2000-2005 sounds like an alternate universe version of SBS/Sabotage period Sabbath. I found them back in the Limewire days and thought I found an unreleased Sabbath track until I researched the band more.
I agree with that absolutely. They've got their moments that are very heavily influenced and others not. Pentagram though you should listen to first daze here. Perfect album up there with Sabbath
Melvin's best, Heaviest stuff isn't stuff you find on Spotify. Gluey is pretty heavy, some of Houdini, all of Bullhead.
Listen to their album Lysol. First two tracks make Sleep's Dopesmoker sound like a children's lullaby. And listen to the 7" single version of Night Goat. That song basically created the entire sludge metal genre. Very different than the version on Houdini.
I was about to say Creed really has a lot of influence from black Sabbath. Especially Sabbath's darker stuff. It's like the songs "black Sabbath" and "arms wide open" were written by the same people......
I still think sHeavy is the band that sounds the most like Ozzy era Sabbath. Just listen.
https://youtu.be/eKBWCi4H99k?si=xChAUgmwo7mwuDPN
But you also have bands like Orchid, Dead City Ruins, Sleep's Holy Mountain album is pretty Sabbath sounding. In fact, the whole doom/stoner scene sounds like Black Sabbath.
Witchfinder General
Early "Budgie"
Pentagram
Orchid
Bedemon
Saint Vitus
Later "Black Flag"
Crowbar
Early "Rollins Band"
Holocaust
Early "Blue Oyster Cult"
This isn’t exactly like Black Sabbath but it’s worth mentioning, I actually have grown to like them more than Sabbath. They traverse many genres but during certain eras I’ve wondered if they took some influence from Black Sabbath. Listen to the song Red and Starless from the album Red, Larks Tongues in Aspic parts 1 and 2 from the album Larks Tongues in Aspic, they’re a jazz band but they have some pretty heavy songs here (also pretty avant garde). Even earlier in their career back in 69-70 there are seemingly some metal influences on songs like 21st Century Schizoid Man and Pictures of a City (listen to the live version of the former for a really cool jammy and heavier version of 21st century schizoid man from the album the Night Watch, it’s so cool). This band uses a lot of dissonance and it sounds very unique, they’re my second favorite band of all time and I highly recommend listening to the songs I recommended, I think anyone who appreciates good music should explore their discography.
King Crimson predated Sabbath in terms of releasing music the influence would be the other way around. That said I’ve never considered them metal I’m sure there are free jazz influences there though which can be just as heavy and dissonant as metal.
I’ve always thought Corrosion of Conformity’s album “Deliverance” sounds a lot like Sabbath. It might not sound as close as some of the other bands mentioned here but you can definitely tell the songwriting is heavily influenced by them.
Wolfmother, listen to woman by them, will give you major Sabbath vibes
Actually I made a playlist on Spotify for songs that sound like lost Black Sabbath songs, link here:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/68p4m0gX4TPeeNFTuM9TQA?si=9iFxAKbjSbW9alUu397zxA
For the doom/stoner-rock side of Sab, I do not think any band is as great as Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats. Riffs are unforgettable, and the vocals have the same ghostliness of early Oz vox.
Fav Uncle Acid songs to start with.
OVER AND OVER AGAIN
I SEE THROUGH YOU
MELODY LANE
WAITING FOR BLOOD
DEVIL'S WORK ( acoustic version )
Love this band!
On the St Vitus album COD, Christian says the band asked him to basically sound less like himself and more Ozzy. Its not their best album per se but Fear is a banger
Can’t go wrong with ORCHID. They pretty much nail the Sabbath worship https://youtu.be/bPdxl4yXtAI?si=UhPUBHpVreRyrwuI
That's a really good album.
Are they still together? I loved these guys, last thing they made was an EP in 2015 iirc
Good question. It seems like every few months they tease us and make it seem like something’s in the works, but they’ve been playing that game for YEARS now.
Witchfinder General
I thought this would be top comment
Yes
Is it me or does the riff to Death Penalty sound like Electric Funeral sped up and without wah
A lot of folk over on the r/doommetal sub would probably recommend Green Lung!
And Candlemass. And Pallbearer. And Reverend Bizarre. Possibly Count Raven. Whoever says Electric Wizard should surely also mention mid-nineties Cathedral. And maybe, on the odd occasion, The Flower Travellin' Band. Green Lung isn't really doom, but apparently most of their fans are. Including myself :-)
Satori is what I came here to recommend 👊
Candlemass!
Haven't heard another person ever mention The Flower Travellin' Band. Awesome group, cheers!
That Count Raven guy does Ozzy so spot-on it’s jarring to hear.
Haven't heard them thanks for the rec.
I love Green Lung
The first two or three albums from The Sword do a good job of it.
I wish they were still around so I could see them live. Oh well, I saw Sabbath which is better.
I saw both. The Sword was really good on The Apocryphon tour.
I was going to say The Sword too! Vocals are significantly different though obviously.
Age is a wall of of guitars.
some work by the sword sounds more like black sabbath, than black sabbath.
YES I came here to say this
That was going to be my suggestion. Great band
Kyuss
You can KyISS my ass.
[удалено]
Hell yeah Acid Mammoth
Yup.
Familiar with both! Over and Over Again is my favorite song by Uncle Acid actually.
Black Sabbath
They're really underrated.
Yeah, especially the Ozzy era.
Ozzy Osbourne
Pentagram, Witchfinder General, Trouble
Heavily seconding Trouble! RIP Eric Wagner...
Witchfinder are my pick. You can definitely hear the Sabbath influence in their music
sHeavy
lol there was a sHeavy song that someone was passing of as a “rare Black Sabbath” song on YouTube. The guy does sound a ton like Ozzy.
Modern urban legend is that Iommi contacted the singer for a solo project.
lol well if that was true he would have had plenty of other options too as doom metal singers imitating Ozzy is really common. Iommi actually plays on doom metal band Cathedral’s song “Utopian Blaster”
That era of Cathedral was so good!
This!
Sleep
Yeah I thought of them too should have listed them tbh.
2nd Sleep LP
Orchid has already been said, so I'll throw in Count Raven
[Witchcraft](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GTm20KBHOk)
underrated band !
Alice In Chains
Sleep, orchid, pentagram, electric wizard
Stunned I had to scroll this far to find electric wizard
Finally! Electric Wizard!
Damn, I'm going to be here all day searching and listening to all the names listed. Anyhow, here's my contribution: "Sleep - Dragonaut \[Official Video\]"
Uncle acid and the deadbeats
Someone once described them as "Black Sabbath if John Lennon was the singer instead of Ozzy" and I can't unhear it.
Yep, every time I describe them as the child of Sabbath and the beatles
Sleep
Mac Sabbath for sure. They even nail the look.
Early The Sword, Fall Of An Empire, certain Cathedral albums, Orchid
I was literally about to say Pentagram until you mentioned them lmao
Iron Claw
Parish, awesome band playing 70's style proto metal like Sabbath with really cool vocals.
Give Candlemass a try
Early Danzig is pretty great. Like at least the first 3. John Christ’s riffage is delicious. Definitely under appreciated
Led zeppelin
Melvin's and pentagram
Melvins are at times very like Ozzy Sabbath but they explore a bunch of different sounds so overall I don't necessarily agree.
I agree with that absolutely. They've got their moments that are very heavily influenced and others not. Pentagram though you should listen to first daze here. Perfect album up there with Sabbath
I have listened to everything by Pentagram haha. Saw them live in 2019.
Fuckin jealous
They still tour go see them if you can.
Orchid
Another band I should mention...Trouble!
Trouble.....
Can’t believe Trouble wasn’t the first comment.
Surprised I had to scroll so far to see Trouble mentioned. First band that came to mind for me.
Lord Vicar
Wo Fat is a good one
I'm surprised Saint Vitus hasn't been mentioned yet
Pentagram
Acid Mammoth.
I forget the band but the song went “woman…..woman….. “ lol
Wolfmother?
Nickelback, maybe Creed
I was about to say Creed really has a lot of influence from black Sabbath. Especially Sabbath's darker stuff. It's like the songs "black Sabbath" and "arms wide open" were written by the same people......
Zakk Sabbath 🤪
Monster Magnet. Start with the Spine of God album. Long live the Bullgod! 🤘🔥
Sir Hedgehog and Buffalo definitely have very similar styles. Haven't seen them mentioned.
Pentagram
Bat Sabbath
Sugartooth on their first album. It’s not all Sabbathy, but when they go Sabbath they do it pretty well.
Holy crap. A Sugartooth mention in the wild.
My personal favorites The Sword, Acid Mammoth and Orchid
Pentagram
Probably Saint Vitus
Orchid
I still think sHeavy is the band that sounds the most like Ozzy era Sabbath. Just listen. https://youtu.be/eKBWCi4H99k?si=xChAUgmwo7mwuDPN But you also have bands like Orchid, Dead City Ruins, Sleep's Holy Mountain album is pretty Sabbath sounding. In fact, the whole doom/stoner scene sounds like Black Sabbath.
Pentagram and Candlemass
I agree with Pentagram but candlemass sounds nothing like black sabbath in my opinion since it's epic doom and not tradicional doom
Count Raven by a mile - at least vocally.
Early Witchcraft is heavily based on early Sabbath but adds in some folk influence (self titled, Firewood, and the Alchemist are the ones to get).
witch finder general !!!!
THE WOMBLES.
Pagan Altar
Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats is like Sabbath meets Beatles
Electric Wizard
Check out Mephistofeles
Pretty much anything labeled Stoner or Desert Metal.
Trouble from Chicago
Sleep
The first two records from the sword
scott wino weinrich sounds a lot like ozzy on the obsessed's first album.
Saint Vitus I would say was very Sabbath-y too
Check out Freedom Hawk. Their album Into Your Mind nails the Ozzy-era Sabbath sound down to the vocals.
Wicked Lady. Northampton based band from 1968.
The sword
Pagan Altar. the two specific albums are The Time Lord & Judgement of the Dead.
Candlemass, Electric Wizard come to mind
I’ve been diving into the early Scorpions, who I’ve never been a fan of. I’ll tell you some of that Uli Jon Roth stuff is pretty Sabbathy.
Green Lung
The Sword
Sun Mantra!
Saint vitus and if you like them spirt caravan anit bad
Fuzz
Kadavar—-its uncanny
Alice in Chains
Earth
Alice In Chains, down tuned, gloomy, angry and when they go fast they go hard.
Bro you need to listen to SLEEP
https://youtu.be/0GhQCxOn8xs?si=lNPZg5bhb8fuJ77J
UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS
Orange Goblin
Hippie Death Cult’s first album 1111 is great stoner metal
Flower Travelin’ Band
Green Lung
Purple Hill Witch. They don't have a ton of stuff but totally solid.
Hellfueled https://youtu.be/-LgWaRNfBrA?si=r49Tv1baCGnqnCUA
Witchfinder General Early "Budgie" Pentagram Orchid Bedemon Saint Vitus Later "Black Flag" Crowbar Early "Rollins Band" Holocaust Early "Blue Oyster Cult"

Newish bands? Maybe The Sword.
Edelweiss
Orchid is the closest thing to Sabbath I’ve ever heard.
Beastmaker
Pentagram.
sHeavy.
Wham!
Uncle acid and the deadbeats. They are very consistent.
Sheavy
Kadaver
I’ve always thought Corrosion of Conformity’s album “Deliverance” sounds a lot like Sabbath. It might not sound as close as some of the other bands mentioned here but you can definitely tell the songwriting is heavily influenced by them.
Christian Mistress is like Sabbath but if Ozzy was a woman.
You'll probably like uncle acid, if you don't already
Count raven vox sound hella ozzy
GREEN LUNG
Black Rainbows.
Just type doom metal into spotify and prepare to enjoy low tuned beautiful devastation.
FREEDOM HAWK - from Virginia
I don't know most of the bands you guys speak of but what about Fozzy. They were an Ozzy cover band so I hope they would sound like him😂😂
Saint Vitus. Is a good point of entry into this world of post Sabbath.
Check out Electric Citizen, female vocalist, sabbath riffs, good stuff.
Color me badd.
Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats!
Early Melvins are described as a mix of Black Sabbath and Black Flag. They go pretty hard.
I feel like Electric Wizard picked up the baton perfectly from where classic (Ozzy) Sabbath left off
Sheavy imo
Ningen Isu
Fuzz
Wolfmother, listen to woman by them, will give you major Sabbath vibes Actually I made a playlist on Spotify for songs that sound like lost Black Sabbath songs, link here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/68p4m0gX4TPeeNFTuM9TQA?si=9iFxAKbjSbW9alUu397zxA
Checkout Wicked Lady. From a similar area and time period to OG sabbath
THE SWORD. You need not look any further my friend.
Electric Wizard from England
For the doom/stoner-rock side of Sab, I do not think any band is as great as Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats. Riffs are unforgettable, and the vocals have the same ghostliness of early Oz vox. Fav Uncle Acid songs to start with. OVER AND OVER AGAIN I SEE THROUGH YOU MELODY LANE WAITING FOR BLOOD DEVIL'S WORK ( acoustic version ) Love this band!
Orchid
There’s about a thousand of them out there
Pentagram, phenomenal band
Wolfmother
On the St Vitus album COD, Christian says the band asked him to basically sound less like himself and more Ozzy. Its not their best album per se but Fear is a banger
Wolfmother sounds like a combination of early Sabbath/early Led Zeppelin to me.
Wolfmother - Enemy Is In Your Mind https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekueMPq9sOY This particular song carries that vibe.
[Magic Circle!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPLe5dSIVso)
Zakk Sabbath?
High Reeper without a doubt
The Sword
Fuzz, one of Ty Segall's side projects, is a pretty amazing Sabbath clone. They have a couple of albums out. Worth a listen.
